Medications for Neck Pain

Medically reviewed by Carmen Pope, BPharm. Last updated on Dec 1, 2023.

Neck pain involves discomfort in various neck structures, including muscles, nerves, spinal vertebrae, and disks. Pain relief options includes acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium (eg, Aleve or EC-Naprosyn).

If over-the-counter options prove insufficient, prescription NSAIDs or muscle relaxers such as cyclobenzaprine may be recommended by your healthcare provider.

Therapeutic approaches encompass physical therapy for posture correction and neck-strengthening exercises. Other methods include Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), soft neck collars (used cautiously), steroid injections, and, rarely, surgery for nerve root or spinal cord compression.

Self-care measures include painkillers, stress reduction, heat and cold application, massage, and posture improvement. Alternating heat and cold, home exercises, and alternative treatments like acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments may also provide relief, always discussed with a healthcare provider before starting.
