Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "This has been so scary. I went to doctors for a routine check-up, it turns out I have a UTI for which they prescribed Bactrim. Three days into the Bactrim, I was not feeling good-lightheaded, sick to my stomach, my head and face were burning up on fire, unbearable headache. Day 4, I ran a fever of 102.9 all day. Days 5 and 6 got worse, I couldn't even stand, couldn't sleep, the pain was unbearable from the tip of my head to the bottom of my feet. Day 7, I made it early in the morning to the doctors to see what was going on. Turns out (as the doc called it), a really drastic allergic reaction to this Bactrim. The doctor said, one more day and I would have ended up in the ICU. Today is day 8, and I'm still sitting here in excruciating pain. I called the doctor back and am waiting for an answer. I'm having trouble using my hands, and it's very painful to walk. So my suggestion is, if you feel ill after taking Bactrim, see your doctor soon."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I have been on Bactrim for 1 week now, and my skin is almost completely clear. I had a very bad infection across my chin and up to the right side of my nose, small red bumps, and an itchy rash that would peel over and got infected. Within 2 days, I noticed a huge difference. This medicine saved my life for sure. Dermatitis and skin issues on the face can really do a number on your self-esteem. I am back to almost clear skin and so, so happy. A little tired and was dizzy at first, but promethazine helps with that if your doctor can prescribe it, it helps with nausea. Other than that, this medicine rocks."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed Bactrim for UTI when first med did not work. 3rd day in, feeling better until 2nd dose taken. Began to feel nausea, dizzy, fatigue, terrible anxiety, unable to sleep or relax. Felt like I was going crazy. Also had constipation, back and stomach pain as well. Almost went to ER. This med is horrible. Never again!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Dr. prescribed this med for my prostatitis symptoms, on day 5 of a 28-day plan. Noticeable reduction in symptoms so far. Pain seems to be fading as the days pass. Was told to take the whole prescription, as just because the symptoms fade doesn't mean it's gone. Some light side effects are lightheadedness, occasional nausea, and some interrupted sleep, some body tingling also during the day. But if it makes these symptoms go away, it's worth the tradeoff. Better than feeling like your bladder area is on fire. If you can handle the slight side effects for a couple of weeks, I would recommend giving this a try. Although everyone is different and side effects may differ."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Started taking Bactrim on a Saturday night for a UTI. I expected to feel better by the morning (I’ve had two other UTIs and I’ve felt better after the first pill). I woke up Sunday morning feeling almost exactly the same. I started to get the worst headaches of my life. Constant throbbing and feeling nauseous. My husband said just keep taking it and let the drugs run their course. Fast forward to Tuesday night, 7 pills in, I’m still feeling awful, still getting headaches. While reading reviews, I was shocked at all the horrible side effects. Like I said, I’ve taken two different antibiotics for two other UTIs and didn’t feel as awful as I did while taking Bactrim. I’m on a different antibiotic now, so we’ll see."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "After my first dose of Septra, my urinary tract infection symptoms disappeared, and my urinary system began functioning normally again. So, as far as being effective against UTIs, Septra seems to do a good job. I've been on it for 9 days, and I have one more day to go. However, there might be some side effects. In my case, they were mildly unpleasant. The first night of Septra, I felt extremely tired, and I fell into a light sleep with the weirdest dreams of my life. They were more like hallucinations than dreams. However, they seemed to pass, and the only other side effects were mainly gastrointestinal, i.e., mild diarrhea, bloating, belching, and a transient sense of mild nausea."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Can’t sleep for more than 2 to 3 hours at a time, even after taking melatonin. Pretty severe nausea and even worse restlessness. Seems to be working for the UTI, but at the cost of side effects, which are leaving me exhausted and bedridden with no energy."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Took Bactrim for folliculitis. First 7 days I only had vomiting and nausea, but on Day 8 I started getting fevers, intense shaking, throbbing headache, sweating, vomiting, insomnia, depression. I never felt this sick ever. It took me a while to realize it was the antibiotic. Once I stopped taking it, I broke out in a rash. Ended up having a sulfa allergy. Please be cautious when taking this. There was one point where I just wanted to call 911, I was in so much agony... It did help clear up much of the infection."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I was diagnosed with a kidney infection and prescribed Bactrim twice a day for 5 days. I took my first pill in the evening, slept for twelve hours, and took another one in the morning. I thought my body just needed the rest, but shortly after the second pill, I slept most of the day. By the end of my experience, I've had: fatigue, stomach pains, severe constipation, nausea, insomnia, and loss of appetite. My kidneys seemed to have improved, but I couldn't even bring myself to take the final pill."

For Bacterial Infection "Got this for a UTI. Literally took 2 pills so far, and I'm already planning to stop taking it. It's 2:30 a.m., and I cannot fall asleep, but I am so tired, I am shaking uncontrollably and am having extreme anxiety along with nausea. Helped with the symptoms of my UTI so far, but not worth the side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "Wow, I should have looked at reviews prior to taking this SMZ-TMP DS medication. I had this prescribed for a UTI/possible kidney infection. I only had a 3-day course. On day 2, I woke up extremely sick, horrid headache that turned into nausea and vomiting. That caused the headache to be even worse. I felt so weak and dehydrated, like the worst hangover of my life, except there was no alcohol involved!! :( I had to drink water all day, or else I felt I was gonna pass out and did nothing but lay on the couch under the blankets. Moving in any way made me out of breath. I finished the dose as I was scared to not finish since the internet says it’s bad to not complete antibiotics. On the night of day 2, I was finally recuperating, but surely after taking the morning dose of day 3, I went back to feeling super crappy!!! I’m hoping my infection is gone, but my back is still hurting, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Anyone taking this, beware!! Make sure to eat a lot and drink a lot, a lot of fluids."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I have been on Bactrim for a month now when nothing could clear up my acne. I tried everything, all the topicals and all the different antibiotics that are acne-specific, and nothing seemed to even touch my acne. So my dermatologist put me on this Bactrim, and it worked. In the month's time, my skin has cleared up, and if I do have a zit occasionally, it comes to a head super quick and heals quickly. My back and chest had tiny little zits over them, and now it’s nothing but smooth skin. Even my husband has said he notices that this is actually working. I didn’t really have any of the side effects, a little nausea and thirst the first week, but that was it, after that, nothing."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I took the first dose of Bactrim and developed a headache, which I treated with ibuprofen. I took pill #2 at bedtime. I woke during the night with an excruciating headache from my face to the back of my head. I made my way to the bathroom and took a couple more ibuprofen but had extreme nausea. The left side of my neck began to hurt and spread down to my upper back and shoulder. The pain was so severe I couldn’t stand to touch my neck or head. My temperature was 99.2 after taking ibuprofen. The pain began to let up the next day after stopping the Bactrim, but my abdomen became bloated and painful. Now, two weeks later, I’m still suffering with bloating, gas pain, rumbling, and discomfort. I texted my doctor and asked her to write in my chart that I will never take Bactrim again."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was authorized to take Bactrim, 2 pills a day for 5 days, to cure my UTI. This, by far, has been the worst side effects I’ve ever experienced while taking antibiotics. I did eat right before taking the pills, and I got terrible nausea, light-headed spells, and muscle cramps. I drank plenty of water to help dissolve the meds, that was all that seemed to subside, if for a little while."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Side effects: Extreme exhaustion, extreme irritability, inability to concentrate, nausea, itching and skin peeling at the site of finger infection, vaginal spotting, body aches, severe headaches. Rx was for 2 times a day for 10 days for severe infection on the end of the finger with red streaks. Completed medicine because infection was healing, but side effects were substantial!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Took this for a urinary tract infection, and I've had them before, taken other medicines. This appealed to me because it was a three-day deal. Started my first dose Thursday evening, and everything was going pretty smooth. I ended up having to leave work after two hours on Monday morning because my body was shaking uncontrollably (more hands than anything). I was nauseous, which I pretty much felt every day, but more so the last. And almost like my head was spinning, like I was going to faint. The shaking was the worst though."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I have dysuria, furuncle of the groin, cellulitis at the same time. I was given sulfamethoxazole plus TMP/DS 800 every 12 hours. I also have Hashimoto's disease and took my levothyroxine a while after taking Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole plus TMP). The first day I started having cramps on the left side of my stomach, thinking it was normal. I took the second pill after 12 hours, and I was worse than before: light headache, nausea, full and heavy stomach feeling. Then I took the third pill in the morning, and soon I was having chest pain, nausea, tired irregular heartbeat, fatigue, tight chest, pain in my teeth, lips, and muscle pain. The symptoms are not improving. I called the pharmacy, and they wanted me to call my doctor, but I will stop this medication, as per my primary doctor. I will have a long talk with them tomorrow, as according to my medical records, I shouldn’t have been on this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "This is my first time commenting on any medicine. Anyway, I almost didn't even take this medicine because of all the bad reviews, but thank God I did!!! Please don't let these negative comments stop you from taking this medicine. The ONLY side effect I currently have is a bit of nausea, and that's only because I do not eat much as I am on a calorie-restricted diet. Maybe these people are having bad reactions because of an allergy to sulfa drugs, or it is just the symptoms of the really bad UTI. IDK... I'm on these pills and have 1 more day left, and it has brought my kidney pain down tremendously. I usually react badly to antibiotics, but not these, so thumbs up!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I get frequent urinary tract infections and was prescribed Bactrim by a doctor at an urgent care center because Macrobid made me pretty nauseous and really tired. It seemed to clear up the infection well but made me extremely sick. I vomited constantly while on Bactrim. I ended up missing four days of school before deciding I couldn't keep taking it and called urgent care for a new prescription. The doctor I talked to when I called said I should never have been prescribed Bactrim because people who don't tolerate Macrobid well usually have even worse side effects while on Bactrim. Since then, I have been prescribed Keflex when I get a UTI and have had no side effects at all."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "This medicine is working for me, but it makes me feel horrible. I've been shaking, have had a rapid heart rate, nausea, extremely thirsty, chills (no fever), dizziness, and cold hands and feet. I did find that taking probiotics helps. It doesn't take away everything, but it helps with the nausea. The only reason I continue to take it is because the doctor said this could be MRSA."

For Bacterial Infection "My experience with this drug is horror. The first night I took the drug, everything was fine. I've been on an anxiety medication prior to taking Bactrim. However, the anxiety that I felt day 2 was like anxiety I've never felt before! I've thrown up in the past, but with Bactrim, I couldn't eat anything! I threw up almost every meal that I ate and woke up all throughout the night! The nausea and insomnia were so bad, these resulted in even more heightened anxiety levels. I stopped taking it after 3 days because I could not handle it! It did help my infection, but in my opinion, it wasn't worth it."

For Bacterial Infection "I got diagnosed with a UTI and was prescribed this medication. I usually don't experience any side effects or mild side effects with antibiotics. The first 3 days were pretty normal. Fast forward to the fourth day, I was feeling feverish. Had really bad headaches and nausea. I'm on my 6th day, and I haven't been able to get good sleep for 2 days for some reason. Also have no appetite, and my stomach feels terrible. This is probably the worst I've felt with any antibiotics. Not even sure if it cleared up the UTI."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim DS for a paronychia infection on my right index finger. There was no apparent abscess, so the doctor felt a script of Bactrim DS would do the job. After taking the first pill, I began to feel dizzy and nauseous. Over the next few days, I had barely any appetite and wanted to sleep all day. I felt like I could not get enough sleep. I was also extremely sensitive to the sunlight, which only enhanced my desire to sleep more. Overall, the infection did not appear to change in the 3 1/2 days on the antibiotic, but that is not to say it did not work. I just was not able to function on it, therefore I called my doctor for something else."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I had mild to severe back acne with constant breakouts on my chest and face. My dermatologist prescribed me this specifically for my back acne, but thank goodness it cleared up my face and chest! Before, on a scale of 1-10, my face and chest were around a 7, but after being on the medication, it's now a 1. My face/chest is now flawless, and my back is now only left with scars. My back acne was extremely terrible, but after using the medication for a few months, it stopped the breakouts and gave time for my skin to heal. I've used this medication for a little over one year now, and I do admit you have to be patient with the medicine. As long as you don't pick and touch your problem spots, then it should work nicely. I experienced nausea every morning when I take the medication and a loss in appetite, but it's not that bad."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I took Bactrim for 3 days for a urinary tract infection. I found relief only hours after taking the antibiotics but experienced severe nausea that continued to get worse no matter how much water I drank or how much I ate. Needless to say, I will be calling my family doctor to try something else."
