Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed this for a nasty spider bite that got infected. The infection started getting better after one day, but the nausea is 24/7. I could hardly eat anything and had trouble sleeping because of the horrible feeling in my stomach. I was prescribed 2 pills a day for 10 days. The pills were large."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I've taken my fair share of medications for UTIs, and so far, this one seemed to be the most effective as far as relieving symptoms quickly. My doctor prescribed me to take two pills a day for 10 days. I felt relief from UTI symptoms as soon as the 2nd or 3rd day. That being said, it has some nasty side effects. They say you can take it with or without food, and I'm guessing that because it makes your stomach feel horrible either way. I've experienced diarrhea, painful gas and bloating, and nausea since the first day of taking it. From my experience, this can usually be expected with strong antibiotics. My advice would be to take a probiotic to help counterbalance! I've done it before, and it helps me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "Really effective, but really terrible side effects. UTI and kidney infection both cleared up quickly, which I'm grateful for, and ultimately that's the point. But I had nausea and vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, joint aches, itchy skin, sore throat, loss of appetite... I felt way better with the infection than I did on the medication. But it's all temporary."

For Bacterial Infection "Yikes! I deal with chronic sinusitis. I’ve had two surgeries because of it, so I have to take an antibiotic every so often to cure it. Now, I’ve taken Bactrim before, yes, it’s made me so sick in the past I couldn’t even finish it. But I’ve had to take it again due to a bad sinus infection. Worse than I remember! Day 2 of taking it, I end up in the ER because my anxiety is through the roof, I can’t sleep, I am moody, loss of appetite, a bit confused, nauseous, like I’m here but not here, death thoughts (not suicidal, just a lot of thought around it), and just not feeling like myself. The ER doctor told me I need to see a crisis nurse because it couldn’t be the Bactrim, but my ENT definitely has said it. Can’t wait for this to flush out of my system. I’m so glad there are lots of reviews to beware. This is absolutely terrible!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "The ONLY side effect I had from this medicine so far is very slight fatigue right after I take it. Had a pretty bad UTI, took the first dose (2 a day every 12 hours), and within a short amount of time there was no more burning, fullness feeling, or pain. I take this for 10 days and I am on day 7. And no dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or anything. Don't be afraid to take this medicine BUT! EAT BEFORE YOU TAKE IT!! Like a full meal! I think many people aren't doing this, and you should."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I went to the ER and was diagnosed with a severe kidney infection. I was prescribed Bactrim, 2 a day for 10 days. I’m on day 6, and I’ve felt some nausea, headaches, and mild body aches, and I’ve been very sleepy. BUT as far as the pain from my kidney and chills, etc., I feel A LOT better!! I didn’t have any allergic reactions."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "This is my third different antibiotic for a deep leg wound that was surgically debrided 4 weeks ago. I have taken Bactrim DS many times before for bladder infections with few side effects. This time I want to die. I ache all over. I am nauseated and haven't eaten anything except a few oranges for 4 days. I am drinking ginger ale and water. I can barely walk because of weakness. My cat even walks ahead of me and stops to look back at me every few steps instead of us racing. Lest anyone suggest I do not know how to take this med, I am a Registered Nurse, and there is no need to question my proper dosing regimen. If it weren't for the fact that I want to keep my lower leg and foot, I would toss this medicine in the trash."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I cut my finger on a piece of metal under the seat of my car and developed a skin infection. Had the infection drained, but was also prescribed Bactrim twice a day for 10 days. After 2 days, I saw my finger start healing up, and within the 10 days, it was completely healed. I only experienced mild nausea and some insomnia. Other than that, it did a great job! Very satisfied."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I have been on Bactrim DS for 7 days. After day 3, I began to notice a severe headache about 4 hours after taking the Bactrim. Now on day 7, I have not only had a headache, but light-headedness/nausea. With only 3 days left, I am going to continue the medicine. My urinary tract infection symptoms have improved finally after 5 days."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "This is my 2nd time on Bactrim. I contracted MRSA after my c-section, and although it does the job it’s prescribed to do, I have never felt so lethargic, nauseous, and just extremely sleepy. The nausea comes in waves all day long, and I can hardly stay awake. I couldn’t figure out what was going on with me until I thought, I bet it’s my antibiotic! Bactrim does the healing of staph infections, but it wreaks havoc on your body as well."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I called the doctors due to weird symptoms after my 5th day of taking this medication. This concludes (chills, nauseous, diarrhea, headache, and even numbness throughout my entire face, lips, and mouth, and the shakes). The pain I get from my UTIs (burning sensation, hard to pee, and hurts). I felt like Bactrim made my pains worse, the burning was 100x worse! I felt as if I was dying!!!! I even had severe insomnia up until 6-7 am! Called the doctors and they said I should have called when the headaches and shakes came along! Cut me off it immediately and prescribed me Macrobid instead. Hope it helps!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Took Bactrim for a UTI for 7 days. On the 6th day, had chills and body aches. Literally could not get off the couch. Went to the doctor and was negative for the flu, and the UTI was gone. Got worse (headache, severe body aches, nausea, diarrhea, no appetite-honestly the worst I've EVER felt) and ended up in the ER for fluids. Stopped taking it 2 days ago and am still feeling effects. Be careful-wished I had stopped taking it at the first sign of stomach discomfort. Glad it's a reliable drug for some, but for me, it was horrid."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "It's currently 12:30 am, and I'm wide awake on a school night typing this. I didn't exactly have all the symptoms of a urinary tract infection, but I always have the urgency to pee. I went to urgent care, and the doctor prescribed me Bactrim. I've been on it for 3 days (today will be my 4th), and I have yet to see results. According to some of you, it doesn't start working until the 5th day, which still gives me hope since the doctor told me it would work within 2 days. What I have been seeing is nausea, diarrhea, shakiness, insomnia, extreme headaches, and loss of appetite. I really hope this works. The constant urge to pee pretty much ruins what little social life I have. Having to make constant trips to the bathroom doesn't fit well with football games."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I will not ever take this medication again (generic form of Bactrim DS). I landed in the ER with a severe kidney infection... was given antibiotics, nausea medication, and pain medication through an IV. Went home six hours later and started the Bactrim that night. I woke up at 2 am absolutely drenched head to toe in sweat, with chills... couldn't fall back asleep. The next day I had the worst headache... terrible, terrible pain in the base of my skull, and a horribly stiff and sore neck. Any time I stood up I could feel my blood pressure in my head sore, just throbbing. I had zero appetite. I stopped the Rx after 2.5 days. I felt worse after I started the Rx than before it. Never, ever again."

For Bacterial Infection "I was on this sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim drug for 3 days, 2 x a day. It was honestly horrible, I have NEVER had issues with any antibiotic. I felt so nauseous and dizzy while taking it. I was getting heat flashes as well. I do not recommend this antibiotic. Worst experience with any type of medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "No health insurance. Went to the ER for UTI and was prescribed Bactrim. UTI symptoms quickly subsided (didn't disappear completely but like 90% better), so that was nice. Then the Bactrim symptoms started. Oh man. I had a different set of symptoms every day. First, it was tingly hands and severe fatigue. Then I had a full-blown panic attack (depression and anxiety can be made worse by Bactrim apparently, so I tried to keep reminding myself of that). Last couple of days, I've had headaches and bad nausea. I'm on day 6 of my 7-day course now--gonna try my best to make it through the whole course, but wow, it's tough. I just hope these symptoms clear up once my pills are gone. It got its job done but made me miserable in the process!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Never again! I was put on this for 3 days-2 pills a day for a UTI. I was laid up in bed for 4 days. I was extremely nauseous, chills, sweats, headache, dizzy, couldn’t eat a single thing, and after day 2, I got a SEVERE yeast infection. The pain was unlike anything that has ever happened to me. I took 2 trips to the doctor and over a week to feel somewhat normal again down there. This was way too strong and unnecessary for a simple UTI infection. Never will I ever take this again. I wish I could give it a zero, I am still having nightmares about this drug."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Prescribe Bactrim 2 days for 10 days for a stye. On the 7th day, I had my allergic reaction. All-over body rash, fever, chills, severe leg pain, chemical burns/ulcers in all soft tissue areas (nose, eyes, mouth, and 'down below'...), abdominal pain, diarrhea, zero appetite, headache, nausea, elevated kidney function test. Bactrim is known and has a long history of hurting more than helping. Stay away!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I have been on Bactrim DS for 6 days (4 more to go) and was diagnosed with MRSA. I feel the medicine is working very well, but my side effects are bad! I feel nauseous all day. I have a hard time eating. I feel like I'm pregnant. My stomach cramps, sometimes bloated, a little bit of dizziness here and there, and always feeling like I am going to throw up. I'm just really glad that Bactrim DS is working for my MRSA because I really don't want to go through different meds and then end up being hospitalized because I couldn't find the right antibiotics for treatment."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Horrible, horrible medication. I was put on a 7-day course of Bactrim for a fairly mild UTI by local urgent care, and the day after starting my dosage, I experienced SEVERE heightened anxiety, panic attacks, low fever, back tension and pain, uncontrollable shaking, and insomnia. Some hallucinations and nausea as well. After day three, I couldn’t take it any longer and stopped taking it— most of the severe symptoms went away within 24 hours, but it’s been almost 3 days since quitting, and my muscle pain and anxiety are still far worse than they were before taking Bactrim."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I stepped on a rusty nail and had a lot of pain, and my foot started to swell. I started taking Bactrim, and the pain went away within the first two pills, which was 24 hours. The only problem is that I can't function with the nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, and headache. I think it's because of a sensitive stomach."

For Diverticulitis "We all agree, this medication is horrible. I have to take it for recurring bouts of diverticulitis, along with Flagyl. I refuse to take Cipro because it ruins ligaments. I have found some things that help. Powerade Zero is a lifesaver because Bactrim tanks your electrolytes. I buy a 12-pack when I have to take Bactrim. Take this medication with food and drink plenty of filtered water. Eat sugar-free yogurt. Chobani Zero is good. Eat a clean diet as much as you can. Take a probiotic 2 hours before or two hours after you take Bactrim. It will do no good taking it at the same time. If you develop yeast (I always do), despite taking a probiotic, you can use caprylic acid gel caps. Make sure you take the probiotics at least a month as Bactrim stays in your system 1-2 weeks. CBD oil helps with the insomnia, nausea, and anxiety it causes. Soda crackers are good for the nausea. Hydrate with Powerade daily! Move your bowels regularly. Prunelax helps! Hope this helps! Hang in there!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I had a UTI, finished an entire prescription of Macrobid. I noticed as soon as I finished the meds, my UTI symptoms came back - so it didn't work for me. I then tried Bactrim. The pain went away after 1.5 days of being on Bactrim, which was a huge relief, but it is now day 4 and I am suffering from nausea, cold sweats, chills, insomnia, and anxiety. It works for your UTI, but the side effects are unbearable after a few days."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "(18 yr/o female) I was prescribed this medication after winding up at the emergency room with extreme pain in my right side. After further investigation, it turned out to be a kidney cyst that had become severely infected and was getting bled into. I was more than willing to start the medication. I had currently been at Mayo Clinic getting tests done for severe stomach nausea and pain. Yet on the third day of this antibiotic, I was miserable. I figured it was my previous stomach issues, yet it got worse and worse. I spent day 3 by the toilet, thinking I was going to be sick with a low fever. After that, I lost my appetite completely and had this awful twisting spasm start in my upper gut. This spiraled into severe depression, anxiety, and not being able to sleep at night. It has kicked my cyst (hopefully), but I am on day 7 after being prescribed for 14 days, and I don't know how much more I can take. Good luck to anyone who can brave this medicine."
