Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I had an abscess that had been draining for about 6 days without end and finally went to the ER and had it lanced and packed. The ER doctor prescribed Bactrim DS. After two days, I became dizzy and nauseous and pretty much bedridden. Based on the reviews here and other sites, I have discontinued using the drug. (10-day dosage) The abscess has stopped draining and seems to be doing okay after taking the meds for 5 days. Also, the ER doctor failed to notice that my HBP med conflicts with this med. (Lisinopril) Next time, I will do more research. Normally, I do, but I felt so miserable, I assumed they knew better."

For Bacterial Infection "I had an abscess that popped, and I believe I got a staph infection. Day 1 on sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim combo, I could tell the infection started healing overnight, felt a tad nauseous. Day 2, started feeling a little dizzy and more nausea. Now on day three, I puked all over the golf course trying to hit a couple of balls. Feel like complete crap. Head feels stuffy. Have no energy. Oh, and last night I had the craziest dreams I’ve ever had. I’m on track to losing my penis by day 10. Scared."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Never again, first 10 days Macrobid. Still had infection. Put me on Bactrim. I was so sick after day 5. I missed 7 days of work, I think 10 days was too much. Had loose poop, nausea every day, dizzy, lost 7 lbs in 7 days, and the worst was the dry eyes and mouth. I felt like poo. I thought I would end up in the hospital. It even made me depressed! Never again!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I had a UTI, usually, it goes away with OTC Azo and water, but this time I could not get rid of it. So I went to the ER. They gave me Bactrim: 2 a day for 5 days. I took the entire round of them, and nothing changed. The medicine itself made me sick as a dog. I could eat with it or not eat with it, and it didn't matter. I was still so nauseous. It gave me chills and made me dizzy as well. I wouldn't give this to my worst enemy!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I have been taking this medicine for a week, and my pimples are significantly smaller, which is a plus because I've had severe acne for 3 years now. The only problem is that it gives me insomnia, sweats, headaches in the mornings, stomach sickness, and nausea. The side effects are brutal, and I'm considering finding another solution. This is the third acne medicine I've tried and has helped the most, but also affected me the most negatively."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was put on Bactrim for a UTI. This did not work for me after 5 doses, 800 mg. I felt like I had just had a baby, I was so very sore. Nauseous, tired, headache (possibly from not sleeping well on it). Amoxicillin always worked for me, I wish my doctor would listen to me. I know my body."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I mean a lot of people on here are saying it didn’t work, that’s probably because you have a different strain of bacteria from your UTI. It’s a guess-and-checking game until your urine culture comes back. Yep, every two months I get a freaking UTI. I have one now:)) and am on Bactrim. I think it’s my second time. The first time worked, now I think I have a different strain. If you don’t eat yogurt before you take it, prepare for extreme nausea and feeling like you’re on a horrible drug. Literally makes my eyes dilate. I feel high and nauseous. Taking a drug this strong, especially for a first guess diagnosis of strains, is so idiotic. Refuse if your doctor prescribes it as a first guess. Don’t put your body through that unnecessarily. Seriously."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Just got prescribed this drug yesterday. 2 a day for 3 days. Took my first dose in the morning and the second at night, I fell asleep soon after. A few hours later, I was woken up with terrible stomach pain and serious nausea. I ended up vomiting several times. After, it felt a little better, but then the pains came right back and nausea persists. Can't sleep, don't think I want to deal with another night of this, hate this medication."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I immediately got worried because of the many negative reviews for this drug. But I decided to just take it and see what happens. I was to take it 2X daily for 3 days. The first day that I took it, I felt a little nauseous and a little off, but nothing major. The second day I felt totally fine after taking the 2 doses for that day. Today I am on the last day, I feel MUCH better (I can still feel slight burning when urinating is not totally gone, but definitely a big difference than when I started). I am hoping that after this last pill, all pain and irritation will be gone. Antibiotics work differently for everyone, so my advice is don't get freaked out by all the negative reviews. I normally don't even write reviews, but I felt the need to."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Seemed to clear up my infection, but started feeling nauseous the next day. Steadily got worse each day. On the fourth day, developed a severe headache, but slept it off. Doctor instructed me to stop taking it. Experienced severely high blood pressure. Also made my abdominal muscles feel weak."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Bad side effects to the extent that I had to stop after 2 days. Flu-like symptoms, bad headache, pain in muscles and joints, low fever, no energy, could not eat, nausea - you name it, I had it. Too bad as I think it was starting to knock down my bacterial prostatitis. The flu-like symptoms were so convincing that I stopped for a few days, felt better, then started again just to make certain I didn't have the flu."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Got a pretty nasty UTI... I've had them before, so I knew the drill. Went to the doctor. The infection was confirmed. He prescribed Bactrim DS, twice a day for 7 days. I read the information provided by the pharmacist, so I knew what to look for in case of a problem and took the first dose. I did have a few side effects: dizziness, mild nausea, and my blood sugar was off, but the infection felt better by the end of day 1. I can deal with mild side effects if it means fixing a larger problem. Pros and cons to everything! I would take it again if needed."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bronchitis "I took this medicine in early June for bronchitis. It worked, and I was all better by the time it was done. In early July, I began to feel general malaise with various symptoms, nausea, fatigue, etc. They did blood work and found that my AST and LST #'s were near 1000 and 900, respectively. It took 4 months for my numbers to go down. And a month later, I started to experience gastrointestinal problems, which is still going on. Not a good experience at all."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I went to the Dr and was prescribed Bactrim for a urinary tract infection. I initially took it on an empty stomach, which was a mistake. Taking it with food, even crackers, prevents nausea and most other side effects. I am on my 3rd full day of taking it, and I have no relief from my symptoms. I'm waiting for my culture to come back and will call my Dr for something else if necessary."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Knocked UTI symptoms out effectively after the first 24 hours. However, the side effects were not pleasant and were very noticeable: headache, nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, weakness, sweating, dry mouth, excessive thirst, tiredness. I'm on day 3 and have asked the doc to switch me to something else so I can function better at home and work. Trying Cipro. Be sure to drink water constantly when on Bactrim DS."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "Was prescribed this almost 2 years ago for a skin infection but quit taking it after 3 days because of severe anxiety, indigestion, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and who knows what else. At the time, I was dealing with panic attacks, so when my current doctor prescribed it last week, I decided, since I was feeling better, to give it one last effort. Days 1-2 were good. Skin was clearing, and other than being tired, I had no side effects. By day 3, I got a headache that was relentless, I was shaky, couldn't sleep at night but couldn't stay awake during the day, diarrhea started, and I quit the medicine at my doctor's advice. It's been over 48 hours since my last dose, and I still feel like crap. My neck hurts, and I'm still feeling incredibly anxious."

For Bacterial Infection "I've never had such a severe negative reaction to a medication as I did for sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim. I became nauseous after the second dose. After 3 days, on Saturday, I called the prescribing practice Dr. on call. I reported severe nausea, with stomach pain, weakness, fatigue, and headache. He stated I had not yet received a therapeutic dose and to continue taking the medication. After 6 doses, I returned to the prescribing Dr., barely able to function. The Dr. advised to discontinue use and noted on my chart that I had a bad reaction. It's been about 36 hours since my last dose, and I'm still very sick: stomach pains, nausea, headache, fatigue. I'm so debilitated I can do nothing but lay on the couch. This is a horrible drug for me and others. Use extreme caution."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "Have been taking this medicine for 5 days for cellulitis that developed on my leg below the knee. I had waited 7 days prior to seeking treatment. The first three days after getting an injection, type not known, thick solution, and needle, and taking Bactrim and Cephalexin showed little signs of improvement. The 4th day showed signs of reduced swelling, the 5th day swelling all but gone, reduced redness and warmth at the site. The 6th day redness reduced greatly and leg feels normal. However, side effects: extreme fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, overall ill feeling. Overall benefits outweigh side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Took 3 days of Cipro - UTI symptoms continued. Put on Bactrim, and initially, the symptoms started improving. But by the 3rd day, I could no longer eat - the nausea was terrible. Chills. Exhausted but couldn’t sleep due to heart palpitations. Finally, started vomiting. Decided that the side effects far outweighed the benefits of this particular drug."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "So I am on day 2 out of 5. First day was awful; 20 mins after my first dose, I started getting extremely itchy on my throat, neck, and face. My bottom lip flared up, and I got really nauseous. I turned the fan on, drank a bunch of water, and lied down. I was going to discontinue it, but after a good hour, all my symptoms went down. I decided to try it again this morning, and I'm feeling fine! Still a little burning when I urinate, but it is so much better now. Hoping this will work."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I had an ingrown toenail, so my podiatrist removed it and put me on cephalexin for a week. After taking all of them, my toe was still infected. She put me on Bactrim to be taken twice a day for 10 days. Twenty-four hours after my first dose, my mood completely changed. I was depressed and miserable. Day 2, I was spinning, it was impossible to function for daily tasks, and I had no appetite. Day 3, I had a full-blown panic attack, then extreme anxiety, and following that, several heart palpitations. Day 6, I had a rash across my midsection. I stopped taking them that day and called my podiatrist, as my toe still wasn't getting better. She advised I stop and see her later on that day. She wound up removing another piece of nail that had been left behind. When I told her all of the symptoms, she said that I'm allergic. As a person who suffers from food allergies, this terrified me. After a week, the nausea, headache, and spinning started to lighten up, but it took around two months to get back to my normal routine. And to think... these symptoms are NORMAL for this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI, and after one dose, I immediately developed a splitting headache, followed later by weakness, body aches, chills, fever, slight nausea, cough, and sore throat. I feel as if I have the flu. I suppose the medication did do what it was supposed to do because the UTI feels as if it's almost completely gone (I'm sure it isn't, but at least it doesn't hurt). I will say I don't think the side effects are worth it. I'm in a lot of pain and discomfort, and I think I'll be going to the emergency room just to be on the safe side."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Was on Cipro for a week but no relief, so my doctor switched me to this drug. Felt relief within 72 hours. I had extreme nausea and a headache the first day I took this drug, but then I started to take it with meals, and I haven't had those side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I had taken the Bactrim 800/160 twice in a day as told. When I got it after my appointment and before bed. That night I was up until 6 am throwing up the medicine. I felt nauseous, confused, and my stomach hurt bad. I had food in my stomach, so I’m unsure why it acted this way, but I would never take it again."
