Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Prescribed Bactrim after I got bit by a black widow spider. 36 hrs after the bite, my skin was red, swollen, and a red streak was tracking up my arm towards my armpit. Given Bactrim to prevent worsening cellulitis (further infection). No issues until I took a morning dose, 4th day, after only having coffee. Felt queasy and an hour later, had cramps, bowel motion. Thought I needed to eat. Ate half an avocado and 15 mins later, vomited till my stomach felt empty. Only took about 8 heaves but rested my gut for a few hours and kept down fish, egg, and avocado. Next dose about 10:30 pm, and I'm eating first!"

"Was given this after going to the doctor. 1st dose felt nauseous, chills, hot flashes, stomach pain, migraine in the center of my head that won't go away. Was able to nap a few hours. 2nd dose same symptoms plus no longer able to sleep, anxiety, can't focus, sweats, buzzing in my head, no appetite, funny taste in my mouth, muscles hurt, feel sick, thirsty. 3rd through 6th doses no changes in side effects, but these also occurred: tongue swollen, don't feel like myself, seeing flashing lights when I close my eyes, fever, runny nose, stiff neck, confusion, vertigo. The original problem went away but came back around the time for each dose. Masks the initial problem. Don't know if it's working. Feel like I'm dying."

"I was originally prescribed levofloxacin for a bad sinusitis. After a week, nothing was happening. I was kept on it another week, and still, nothing. Then the doc gave me the sulfameth trim. I have been bedridden for 7 days. Body aches, dizziness, nausea, minor vomiting. I literally feel like I was hit by a train. I have 7 days left, but that is it. I'm done. I will not put this crap in my body again. It has been a nightmare."

"Pill 3 was the worst night. Burning sore throat down to my navel. I wished I could let the fire out if I opened my mouth! Abdominal pain, so bad I thought of going to the ER at 1 am. Chills got worse, so did the stiff neck, arms, legs very heavy, cough, headache, runny nose, and oh my God, the leg cramps brought me to tears. Up all night every hour on the hour, throwing the last 7 tablets out!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Do not take Bactrim, the side effects are awful. My side effects were that I was dizzy, my mouth was so sore I could hardly eat. Had bad leg pains, no appetite, nausea, headaches, I would break out into a sweat. I stopped taking this, been off of it 3 days, and still feel terrible. Never take this again!!!!"

"I am on day 4 of the medicine, and this will be my last day. I was prescribed for 20 days, 2x/day for chronic sinusitis. There is no way I can stay on it!! These past four days, I have been trying to 'tough' it out with heart palpitations, shortness of breath, horrible visions, and exhaustion!! It took a couple of days for the side effects to kick in, but today, between clients, I lay on the floor at work!! (when my boss wasn't looking, of course)...but I've never done that!! I really wanted to kick my chronic sinusitis, and it has helped clear my sinuses, so like others said, it does work, just not worth the side effects!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I was prescribed this for an infection on my scalp. I took two doses, and it started with muscle twitches all night long, with a racing heart. I almost threw up several times, and my stomach was very unhappy, which was to be expected, but it was more severe than I thought. I haven’t taken a dose in 2 days, and since then, I have had a nagging zinging pain in my left shoulder. I also have had a weird sharp pain in my right forearm."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I was prescribed Bactrim to treat stenotrophomonas maltophilia in my lungs. I have had a persistent cough for 4 years, and this bacteria was found after having a bronchoscopy. My cough got better, but the medication caused a ganglion cyst I have in my hand to become very inflamed and painful. The cyst is in the palm of my hand at the base of my middle finger. The finger became so painful I could hardly bend it. When I stopped taking the medication, it went away. I did complete the course of treatment because it was important to me to get rid of the infection, but that was my only side effect."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "First 2 1/2 days this seemed to be working for me. 3rd day developed a major headache and nausea. By day 4, I felt a bit feverish, but nothing major. By day 5, my entire body ached and I just wanted to sleep. The fever, although not high, continued to go up and down. By day 6, I felt just as bad, no headache, but nausea, feverish, chills, etc. Day 7, enlarged lymph nodes, stopped taking it. Day 8-9, severe rash all over body. Seeing now possible signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I recently got an ear piercing called a snug. It became so infected I had to see an ENT. He prescribed me Bactrim, and I have been on it for 4 days. He had to drain my ear, and it hurt a lot. I just came home from my second appointment, and he took out the packing he put in from draining it and just put a Band-Aid over it and told me to compress hot water over it for a while. Bactrim has given me no side effects, and it works amazingly."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have not had a good experience using Bactrim. The first day's dosage caused no side effects, however, by day 6, I had headaches, severe heartburn, nausea, chills, severe muscle weakness, depression, anxiety, and generally felt unwell. I took each dose with a full glass of water and a full stomach, as recommended. I am supposed to take this for 4 more days, but I will call my doctor for an alternative treatment."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I've never experienced any side effects from antibiotics. But this stuff is scary. I took my second dose today, and after 2 hrs, I started to feel light-headed, my heart started racing, and a strong headache came on top of it. It is getting better now after 14 hrs. I refuse to take it any longer and let my body do the job."

"Ohh my Bactrim DS... I pity the people who may have to take these medications in the future. It's bad!!! The side effects kicked in after 3 days. I got really bad anxiety, and the stomach aches and indigestion were BAD!!! Skin rash was also itchy. Took forever to clear my UTI!"

"This drug seemed to help rid me of my UTI, but it did cause some side effects. Hot flashes, nausea, extremely vivid nightmares, and general GI upset were the most notable. (One night, I was awakened by a sound while in bed and hallucinated that my mom was standing in the doorway. I yelled at her to 'get out!' and thought I heard a reply, but it turned out to be my full-length mirror I was yelling at). But compared to, say, Cipro or clindamycin, Bactrim wasn't too bad for me. Note: I say 'for me' because everyone reacts differently. Antibiotics, like most drugs, are a trial-and-error thing. You don't know which ones will agree with you until you try them, which is pretty scary."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "For a few days, I had what I thought was a pimple in the opening of my right nostril. Finally, I softened it with warm water, and it popped. BIG MISTAKE! DON'T DO IT! Within a day, the right nostril was reddish-purple and swollen, my cheekbones hurt, my upper gums were inflamed, and even my teeth hurt. There were now three more in my nose. I went to urgent care, and the doctor said it was cellulitis/staph infection, put me on Bactrim (2x a day/10 days) and topical (Mupirocin 2%) that can be used in the nose even though it says not for internal use: mouth, nose, ears. This is my fifth dose, between day 2 and 3. Still in a lot of pain, but the original 'pimple' seems to have a brownish coloring, possibly on the way to scabbing. Definitely headache provoking, taking with Tylenol."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have chronic bacterial skin infections, and my dermatologist put me on Bactrim DS. It did the job. Got rid of the infection, but the side effects were why I had to stop. It caused me to have blood in the stool, so she switched my medicine, and now I feel the infection coming back. Guess we got to find another antibiotic."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Seems to be working, am impressed with it. Had a sinus infection, throat infection, earache, and woman-type of rash under my arms. All seem to be improving. I have only started taking the medication, though. I am hoping for the best from what others here had to say."

"Wow! This medicine can really knock you down! I was given this for strep throat. After day 2, the problems REALLY started on me: neck stiffness, stomach pain/tenderness, bloating, a couple of spots on the back of just pure pain. Skipped a dose of this medicine after like day 5ish, started it back up last night; went to bed with chest pains. WOKE UP with chest pains. Sometimes makes it hard to breathe. After reading a few reviews, I'm scared to take the rest of this medicine. I do feel quite better, but I'd rather be safe than sorry; I'm calling a doctor today!"

"You won’t be hungry, you will feel full, but DRINK DRINK DRINK DRINK DRINK. Went through a gallon and a half in an hour on a full stomach. The symptoms are signs of dehydration. COFFEE = Bad idea, I promise that will make it worse. Stay away from high sodium foods as well, or keep drinking water until it’s bed time. I promise you, if every time you had a symptom and drink water, it will go away."

"Holy cow. So I am on my 4th UTI in 5 months, and this is the first time I have been on Bactrim, and NEVER AGAIN will I take this. The side effects are not worth it. Intense racing thoughts and anxiety within 1-2 hours of taking it. Feeling super dizzy and wobbly. Feeling like you are moving too fast/whiplash, intense depression, demotivation. One day I had chills and a slight fever. Appetite suppressed/food/water aversion. Made me sick to my stomach just to drink water. Exhausted during the day but insomnia. I gave it a 3 because it is working to get rid of my UTI, but wow, it has taken my week. I'm going to fail my finals because I was so out of my mind on this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I was in a hospital room for two nights after a TURP procedure (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate). Side note - TURP ruined my love life. IMHO, get prescribed on some type of prostate shrinkage medication ASAP, or the newer procedures for enlarged prostate and bladder retention can also be neurogenic. None of the urologists I saw ever even did the simple digital up the rectum in the same hospital. When I got back home, my family doctor thought I probably caught the C. diff in the hospital. She tried me on 'this, that, and the other' antibiotic specified to treat C. diff. If anything, things got worse. After several months of being on different antibiotics, I requested she try Bactrim. I cannot say for certain it was the Bactrim which 'cured' my C. diff, but after being put on that Bactrim regimen, things did get better, and for all intents and purposes, my C. diff 'went away', cured, hasn't been a problem ever since."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I had a lump removed from my breast. It ended up getting infected from the inside. So I was prescribed Bactrim. It was about a week and a half before I noticed I was developing a rash. I went through my whole house, cleaning and racking my brain, trying to figure out why I was having an allergic reaction. I didn't even think of having an allergic reaction to the medicine. So I called my doctor, and they took me off it ASAP. It didn't help my infection, and it made me break out everywhere, and I mean everywhere, lol!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I am taking this for cellulitis. I have been on it for 5 days, and the swelling has gone down significantly, but the side effects are really crappy. I feel achy, hot, and I have a headache, and my joints hurt, but I'm not sure if this is also from having Lyme disease in the past."

"I take this occasionally for a week for a recurring yearly cyst in my private area. Works quickly for me! I do not take it all the time, only when the cyst appears from working in a room with no air conditioning. I haven't had any side effects other than I feel the need to drink more water, and I'm a tiny framed person."
