For Progesterone Insufficiency "On June 30, 2019, the pharmacy filled my prescription with a new generic drug from the manufacturer Akorn for micronized progesterone 100 mg capsules. I take 300 mg each night. The generic for Prometrium from the Akorn manufacturer-generic micronized progesterone, I started itching, now I am itching head to toe. Also, I started having headaches and dizziness. I started having strange vivid dreams, not sleeping well, and increased hot flashes. I have been taking Prometrium for many years, including other generics, without any problems. I decided to stop taking the Akorn manufacturer generic micronized progesterone 100 mg capsules and request a new prescription of Prometrium. The FDA wrote two warning letters to Akorn in 02/2018 and 06/2019 at the same plants where the medication was made. It may be contaminated with unknown foreign substances. My co-pay after insurance for a 90-day supply was $241.24 for a quantity of 270 capsules, 100 mg each. Very expensive for a generic that harmed me!"

Progesterone for Amenorrhea "This drug is effective at inducing a period, but it has awful side effects. Basically, you will feel pregnant-tired, dizzy, hungry for junk food, and bloated. My breasts grew half a size within 3 days of taking. Then the rest of me caught up and I gained 5 lbs in the 10-day time frame that I took this drug. But it did do what it was supposed to do, so I can't totally complain."

Progesterone for Amenorrhea "I am currently taking this medication for a missed cycle. I was told to take it at night due to the drowsiness it may cause. So far, I have not noticed much of a problem with that. I have been on the pill for 5 days, and the side effects are almost unbearable. I have breast tenderness, but also the muscles around my chest/back area are aching to the point of being painful. I called my doctor about this side effect and was told that the medication has not been known to cause achiness. After reading this website, I see it is very possible. I have had some dizziness, sweating, and irritability as well. Either way, the medication seems to be helping, but I really cannot wait to quit it!"

For Endometriosis "I've been taking this medication for a year now and was hoping I'd get used to it, but no luck. It did initially help with the wicked menstrual cramps I'd get on day 2 (vomiting from pain), but I can't take enough of it due to the side effects. I can only take it on the weekend, then it ruins my whole weekend. I feel tired, dizzy, can't think clearly, clumsy, and kind of drunk. It also stays in my system a really long time, 24-36 hour half-life, so I'm drunk and dizzy for that long. Bummer because it doesn't make me feel nauseous at all, like the pill does. Still, I may try the birth control pill instead. Can't really function on this and not sure I should be driving, much less working on it."

For Uterine Bleeding "I was prescribed progesterone by my GYN for unusual, post-menopause spotting coupled with the thickening of my uterine lining. He said it might reduce the uterine lining. Mine is 16 mm, and normal is about 4 mm. He did not say how this drug would achieve this. I do not know if the lining will evaporate or if I will have a period. I have been on it for 30 days, and the spotting has stopped. I will now have a vaginal ultrasound to see how thick the lining is. I can't imagine it would be thinner because how would that happen if there was no period. I give the drug high points because I slept really well, and there were no odd symptoms, no breast tenderness, no real dizziness. I took it at bedtime, of course."

For Progesterone Insufficiency "All day dizziness and general blah feeling. Sleep majorly disrupted, and when I get it, it doesn't do anything to help with the tiredness I already have. Nails grew weak and thin. Also had some numbness in places, which went away when I stopped the pill."

For Uterine Bleeding "I am 44 years old and taking AK2 generic for Prometrium for unusual uterine bleeding. The doctor put me on this to stop my irregular bleeding, but so far, after 4 days of taking it, I am still bleeding with some clots. I am supposed to take this for 12 days. He said my progesterone levels were really low, and the endometrium had built up too much in my uterus. The first time I took it, I got really dizzy and sleepy, so now I am taking it at night. I have had a bad headache on two different occasions and a fast heartbeat and definitely feel brain fog and can't think. This medicine is no fun. I had a normal cycle up until a month and a half ago, but a few months before that, I noticed a reduced cycle, so I am having low hormonal levels, I guess."

For Progesterone Insufficiency "I am using this in my FET cycle for IVF. I am 4 weeks, 4 days pregnant. I was taking 2 vaginal inserts (100 mg) each per day, but after blood tests came back showing a very low progesterone level, my Dr. is having me take an additional 600 mg per day in pill form (200 mg, 3x per day). My Dr. warned me that I would be very tired and possibly dizzy. I have been on the pills for 3 days now and have noticed that my breasts are very tender and swollen, which they weren't before, and it does make me a little drowsy, but not bad, it's manageable. I go back on Tuesday to check my levels."

For Amenorrhea "I’ve been taking this progesterone pill for nine days orally. The first few days were fine, just had a bit of nausea. Then around my 5th night, when I took it at night, about an hour and a half later, I had dizziness and felt like I was in another world. It feels like laughing gas. I also am noticing bloating and, on the next day, headaches. It also makes me have mood swings once the dizziness has left my body. It makes me very tired, and I sleep great. I’ve had these symptoms since then. No sign of bleeding since then and I am not sure if it will work for me. But it says if you have these symptoms, you will get results, so I’m hopeful."

Progesterone "Two months into taking this med, I have found it's making me feel ill. Dizziness, shortness of breath, lethargy. I've had test after test. Then realized this all happened after starting this med."

Progesterone for Perimenopausal Symptoms "Taking it at 100 mg. Didn't like the dizzy feeling. Started taking it at night, much better, but I feel it building up in my system over time. I wish I could take half or 3/4 as much, but it is not available in those doses. I have absorption issues, and the liquid form is great except I can't cut it in half. I do like what it does for my thinking, digestion, emotions, etc., but over time, irritability, heavy dreaming, pregnant-like feeling build up. I am a small woman, about 110 lbs, 5 feet, and wish smaller doses were available. A little bit goes a long way."
