"I’ve been on this medicine, oxcarbazepine, for about a month, along with Buspar and Zoloft. I have noticed I haven’t been as depressed since starting this medicine, but I still have my days. Honestly, I don’t think it’s the right medicine for me, though. I’ve had increased anxiety, restlessness at night, dizziness, anger, headaches, and somewhat feeling “out of my mind.” I was prescribed this for bipolar disorder, which I still haven’t been fully diagnosed with."

"I've only been using it for a week, but my anxiety is already noticeably better. I started on 150 mg, and now I'm up to 300, and will increase it to 450 in a day or so. Even after the first time I took it, my anxiety was much more manageable. I usually tend to overthink and be paranoid about every little thing around me, but this has helped so much with that. I've been able to talk to friends on the phone, and I'm usually too afraid to do that. It feels like a huge weight was taken off of my shoulders. One issue that might be a problem for some people is it can be hard to concentrate on one thing unless you really want to. It's easy to just go into autopilot and let your mind roam free."

"It worked well for me for 6 months, and out of nowhere, I started having meltdowns again, and I have now been switched medications. But it did really have an effect on my memory, and I’m still struggling with my memory. Hope I get back to normal soon."

"I am also taking an SSRI, phenobarbital, Dilantin, and gabapentin. A well-controlled epileptic who also has a history of depression and GAD. The polytherapy increases the odds of side effects from Trileptal, which may play into my case. Trileptal was started ~ 2 years ago and slowly titrated upwards to 1,800 mg/day. The drug lessened my anxiety levels and symptoms, but I have experienced many of the side effects: hyponatremia, lethargy, slowing of my thought processes-particularly recall of facts, ataxia, and numbness of the fingers. I also experienced intermittent nystagmus. Currently at 1,200 mg/day, treating the low Na conservatively, and am considering lowering the dose further, but I also want to keep the anxiety in check. It’s a difficult challenge. In summary, I am rating this medication as a five. It has worked for me, but I am not sure the side effects are worth it. I do have a good psychiatrist, and he has been aware and supportive of all of the adjustments."

"I have anxiety with depression and panic attacks. I got first Zoloft 50 mg and Olanzapine 5 mg. Didn't work. Three weeks ago, my doctor prescribed me 100 mg Zoloft and Oxcarbazepine 300 mg, 3x1. Worked as I woke up from a long dream. Also, it doesn't interfere with other medications (0.5 mg Klonopin, Olanzapine 5, medical marijuana). Need about 2-3 days to work properly in a daily dose of 900 mg. Do not take alcohol with it."

"I've had a lot of meds in my time to treat anxiety, but this one is by far the least effective medicine so far. No noticeable side effects for me, but my anxiety actually worsened while on it. This med may work fine for other things, but it doesn't when it comes to anxiety."

"This medication helped get me out of the psych ward. I had extreme intrusive paranoid thoughts as well as depression. With this medication, at the right dose (for me, it is 900 at night), my intrusive thoughts are minimum. I’m on other medication as well, but this is definitely what helps mitigate my symptoms the most. The only downsides are that it does make me drowsy, and I work early, so it’s difficult to wake up, and that it also almost completely gets rid of my sex drive, which can also lead to poor mental health. I’ve made the decision that lack of intrusive thoughts is probably my priority."

"Been taking for over a month, and my family and I noticed a difference instantly. I felt like I finally had relief until I missed a period, and now I'm thrown off because outside of being pregnant, my cycle has never been off. Has anybody else experienced this?"

"I told my doctor I have been allergic to like every single med I have ever been prescribed, except benzo meds, some sleeping meds. Lack of sleep can really imbalance the brain. Doctors have just thrown random diagnoses at me forever, and I have almost died in the past from lots of them. My new doctor has tried me now on two antiseizure meds she says to fix anxiety - I had severe reactions to both. The first one, Lorazepam, I felt I was going to die of diarrhea (it's a bipolar med), and I swear I felt bipolar for the first time in my life from it. This new one, oxcarbazepine, made me feel just NUTS immediately. I was doing great with the benzos and sleeping meds, then popped an oxcarbazepine and feel disoriented, super depressed, like my mind is scrambled, restless."

"My doctor put me on this today because she doesn't want me taking tranquilizers with pain medication, no matter how seldom I need a tranquilizer. It scared me at first when she said she was removing the tranquilizer because although I need it very infrequently, when I do need it, it's for a massive breakdown. So now I'm on oxcarbazepine and told to take 1/2 pill to 2 pills up to twice daily. Obviously, I got online and read several medical websites talking about its use and discovered that it-like SOOO many other medications nowadays-is not being prescribed for its original purpose (in this case epilepsy), but for the 'positive' side effects they discovered after the fact. I decided that rather than wait for a massive anxiety attack to test the effectiveness at calming me, I would take a half pill today to see how it affects me. Also, like many drugs out there, this one can put a strain on your kidneys, so keep that in mind before taking this pill."

"It was horrible, increased my anxiety, and gave me night sweats as well as paranoia."

"I've always had bad anxiety/OCD, but I had an anxiety attack in April 2024 that basically changed everything for me. I was in a constant state of panic for months until November 2024 when I started Trileptal. It started working immediately, and it stopped my panic attacks completely. My anxiety was rising over time until I upped my dose, and now in February 2025 I'm starting to feel like myself again, and I still haven’t had one anxiety or panic attack since starting this medication. I’ve also had zero side effects, which is great for me because part of the reason I’ve never wanted to try medication was because of side effects. Some days are better than others as far as general anxiety, but this medication has stopped that constant panic/doom feeling completely and has helped me be able to manage my intrusive thoughts easier."
