For Dysautonomia "At first, it seemed like the medication was helping only because it was making me drowsy enough to actually get sleep, but the longer I took the medication, the more apparent it was how wrong this drug was for me. After about a month of taking the medication, most of my dysautonomia symptoms got worse and worse, and I even developed severe depression, which I never had. By the time the Dr. took me off the drug, it had made me much more symptomatic than I was before I started it."

For Migraine Prevention "Been taking nortriptyline 75 mg for two years. Went from 2-3 headaches a week to maybe 2 a month. Side effects are loss of balance (yoga practice suffers), urine retention, sleepiness. I take it at night so I sleep pretty well. I'm reading here that some experience weight gain, that's good to know! I was blaming myself for lack of self-control. This week, I had what I think was an afibrillation episode in the middle of the night. I have to now look at whether it's worth it to have heart issues to keep myself from head pain. The head pain was pretty awful though."

For Pain "After having major surgery to repair a huge incisional hernia, I developed severe abdominal pain that lasted for months. Several tests (CT scan, internal/external ultrasounds, barium test, etc.) and many doctors later, I saw a gastroenterologist who prescribed nortriptyline. I was reluctant as it is a TCA, but I was at my wits' end with the pain, and it was controlling my life. Within 3 days, the pain was completely gone! I have been taking it for about 5 weeks now, and I am doing great. The first week, I felt a little groggy in the mornings and have developed tinnitus. The grogginess abated, and I feel like myself again. What a relief. This really changed my life... no kidding. Hope this helps."

For Migraine Prevention "Lots of drowsiness, feeling sick after taking the medicine, headaches didn't stop, for a lot of people here with migraines, head pressure, neck pain, nausea, weakness. Please check with your doctor to see if you have TMJ disorder, occipital neuralgia that can be the cause of all your problems. It's awful, I feel sick constantly because of the TMJ and occipital neuralgia. Hope this helps."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I'm 34 years old and have been suffering with IBS for about 5 years now. I started taking 25 mg nortriptyline, and it has made a huge difference. I never could get any sleep and tossed and turned at night due to the pain. I noticed I started sleeping better and longer and didn't deal with daily pain. However, I had tried to stop this medication in the past, and it caused major withdrawals. But I would recommend this to anyone suffering with IBS. The only side effect for me was drowsiness."

For Pain "I have spinal stenosis that has caused nerve pain down my arms and legs, along with headaches. I was put on several different meds before nortriptyline that made me feel worse. This is the first time I have felt no pain in a couple of years. I find if you take the meds around 5/6 in the evening, you don’t wake up so drowsy."
