Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I have had 3 experiences with Macrodantin, and they have all been bad! I am sure that this drug works very well for those that can tolerate it, but it is not for me! I have had recurring kidney infections all of my life, and the first time I was put on it, I became nauseous, vomited, and felt very ill. This doctor told me that he would not be giving that drug to me again. Several years later, I had a UTI, and my new doctor gave it to me, but it was under another name, so I didn’t make the correlation. Again, fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting. When I researched the medication, I realized it was a generic name for Macrodantin and stopped taking it immediately. This last time, after having been told by my doctor that it was just a coincidence, I tried again! Again, I had the same symptoms as before! I felt miserable for 2 days. I’m off Macrodantin for life!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was given this for suspected UTI, and I can honestly say I have felt like death. I ended up on two courses of it but stopped through course 2 as I felt feverish, sick, face hurt, weird neck pain. After 24 hours of stopping, I felt better. I'm left with a really bloated stomach that's painful. Anyone else had similar?"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I just had a course of Macrobid, and I can honestly say I have never felt as poorly. I had a raging fever, temp 39.03, palpitations, and chills. Loss of appetite and exhausted. I didn't finish the course and feel better 48 hours later. I wouldn't recommend these tablets to anyone."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "About 30 minutes after taking the pill, I felt like I had the flu. (Feverish, chills, achy joints, terrible stomach pains, headache, heartburn, and pure exhaustion.) Within the hour, I had to go to bed. I do have to say that I woke up the next day feeling great! I waited until I got to work because I didn't want to take the pill and drive. I spent the rest of the day at my desk feeling the same as the night before. When it was time to drive home, I felt okay, and the symptoms from my infection were clearly getting better. I'm now on day 4, and I've gotten into a routine that helps. I take the pill at 10 pm after I've put my kids to bed and do what I have to do for the night so that I can go right to bed and skip feeling like crap all night. Then I take it again at 10 am, about an hour or so after I get to work in the morning. I eat Greek yogurt right before taking the pill and a few crackers or a Nutrigrain bar right after, and that has definitely helped with the stomach cramps and heartburn!"

For Bladder Infection "Macrobid solved the kidney infection but made me extremely ill, and I ended up in the hospital for 4 days with pneumonia. It wasn't until day 6 that I became tired, short of breath, had a rash on my hands, fever, and could not keep anything down. I ended up in the ER, and my liver counts were elevated, eosinophils high, respiration rate poor, oxygen levels low, and the chest X-ray confirmed pneumonia. I can't take it again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I just finished a round of nitrofurantoin and had the worst symptoms of fever, chills, insomnia, bloating, and headaches. I eventually had to go to the ER and was prescribed another antibiotic. It is working fine."

For Bladder Infection "Taken this drug for a suspected UTI - never again will I ever take this! Day 2 of taking 4 a day. I developed bad chills and fever, dizzy and drowsiness - felt like my eyes were rolling. Severe headache, sickness, and extreme tiredness, pounding heart and tight chest. Never felt this ill. Obviously, I have stopped taking it. I am allergic to trimethoprim too... In a different way, I come out in hives. Think twice about taking this drug... I feel I have been poisoned. Still feel very ill today."

For Bladder Infection "I was prescribed this medicine after I had side effects to 3 other medicines. I feel sick to my stomach, every bone in my body aches, fever, off balance, only able to work 4 hours a day, then I go home to bed. I'm sticking it out, only 2 more days to go. I'm hoping my UTI will go away and I will get back to normal again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I took 2 capsules on day 1, and by evening, time for dose 3, I had joint pain, a fever, chills, and a headache. I thought I was getting the flu. Day 2, I was so weak I could not get out of bed nor eat. Took another capsule as I did not think a medication could cause this. By evening, I was so sick I called my doc, and he said to go to the ER. Thankfully, I did. By the time I got there, my liver function was extremely impaired. Instead of being in the 9-35 range, it was 667! After a day in the ER, I was admitted to the hospital for 4 days. It took over 8 months for my liver function to come down under 100. I don't drink or take either medications. The doc said this was a textbook adverse reaction in the extreme."

For Bladder Infection "I had an infection after the stent in the ureter was removed after surgery. This is the worst medication. Dizzy, nausea, fever, chills, hard time breathing, weak. Headaches, diarrhea. I had surgery to remove a kidney stone. I got an infection from the stent, so the doctor put me on this. Yesterday was so bad, I had to stop taking it. Better today but still nausea, diarrhea, weak... Would never take this again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "So I went in on Tuesday for a UTI, but no bacteria showed up, so the doc prescribed the generic Macrobid. The first pill I took was on Wednesday. I ended up having a severe headache 30 minutes later and got a slight fever all day and took the 2nd pill. The next day, I woke up feeling great and took the medicine again, leaving me with a terrible headache again. So that night, I did not want to take it whatsoever. Then Friday came (today), and I went back in for a different medicine, and my head didn't hurt really at all, but I found out I still had a temp of 100.1. This pill has given me the worst with terrible headaches and a fever. Definitely doesn't work with me. Did slightly help whatever I have going on, but not as quick as others."

For Bladder Infection "I took nitrofurantoin for a bladder infection for 7 days before having a reaction. On Day 8, I ran a low-grade fever, chilled, had no appetite, had to force myself to drink water, and had a dry cough. No energy at all. Day 9 was the same, so I stopped the drug. Day 10, I felt better but noticed a rash on the backs of my calves. Day 11, the rash developed into full-blown hives everywhere. Went to a clinic and got a steroid shot and prednisone and a new antibiotic because the bladder infection did not clear up, and I am allergic to it."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid). I took my first dose at noon, and about an hour later my skin was on fire, and I had hives all over my body. Shortly after that, my heart started racing, and I felt extremely tired. I slept on and off all day until my second dose at midnight. Four hours later, I woke up feeling like I was dying. I was violently ill and extremely nauseated. I had a fever, and my body felt like it was hit by a car. I looked online and saw all the bad reviews; I also looked at the side effects and had just about all of them. I’m allergic to amoxicillin and get hives, but this was nothing like that; I’d keep the UTI over what this medication did. Nearly 24 hours later, and I still don’t feel right. Avoid at all costs."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "This is the worst medicine. I took 3 doses. By the 3rd dose, I couldn't keep my eyes open, achy, dizzy, and nauseous, with a fever. I wouldn't recommend this medicine to anyone. Needless to say, I stopped taking it."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "After my first dose of Macrobid, I experienced some of the worst pain I have ever felt: a horrible headache, my entire body hurt, fever/chills, and a lot of nausea. I couldn't function the remainder of the day. I was falling asleep during work and while driving home. I decided maybe I would only take it right before bed. I woke up in the middle of the night sweating and achy. I'm on my third dose, and I'm honestly not sure that it is helping my UTI. If I make it through the prescribed amount, I will most certainly never take it again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Terrible medicine. Took it first day as prescribed with food. Within a couple of hours, I was down and out. Fever, aches, pains, horrible nausea, vomiting. Trying to avoid going to the ER but might end up there if it doesn't wear off soon. Never taking it again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "First dose: weakness, fatigue, mild nausea, headache. Second dose: weakness, fatigue, fever, moderate nausea, chills. Third dose: EXTREME nausea, vomiting, fever, weakness, chills and hot flashes, chest pain, diarrhea, literally felt like I was going to die! Finally realized it was the medicine after the third dose. More intense side effects immediately stopped when I didn’t take the next dose, but it took me three days to recover from the loss of fluids and feeling weak. My doctor switched me to a different med and felt literally no side effects. Will never be taking this ever again no matter how many UTIs I get in the future."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After taking two capsules, I woke up the next morning drenched in sweat, followed by severe chills and high fever (103 to 104). With each dose, my symptoms multiplied: nauseous, vomiting, severe body aches, swollen knee and hand joints, headaches, diarrhea, swollen and painful neck. After nine doses, my doctor instructed me to stop taking the medicine, and I started improving. I am left with night sweats and lack of appetite."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This antibiotic was complete hell. I took the first dose, within 2 hours, I was dry heaving with an overall sick feeling. Before bed, I took the second dose, woke up in the middle of the night with fever, chills, chest pain, pain when breathing, and basically every flu-like symptom. I called my doctor, and he saw me right away and did every test under the sun. I had a WBC count of over 20,000! I was almost hospitalized and ended up having to get a shot of an antibiotic in my butt and was switched to Cipro. Never again! Cipro from now on for me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Never having had any reaction to antibiotics before, I took these and ended up being admitted to the hospital with suspected meningitis: high fever, banging headache, rash... typical symptoms! I could hardly walk, and I felt so ill. I had a lumbar puncture which came back clear (thank God), so the doctors put it down to 'a virus.' However, some time later, I got another infection and started a new course of nitrofurantoin. Within a couple of days, all the symptoms I'd previously experienced started again, and the penny dropped! My reason for writing this review is not to scare anyone and probably for most there won't be any side effects, but to raise awareness for those people who have an adverse reaction."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I have foolishly taken Macrobid twice for the same infection. It seems to clear it up, but actually, it reappeared within two weeks. Both times had a severe reaction. High fever alternating with chills. No energy whatsoever. Sleeping all the time. Terrible headaches. Nausea. Unable to eat, no appetite whatsoever. Dry mouth, no saliva to the extent my mouth stuck together overnight and my lips cracked, and it felt like I had a trout pout my mouth was so swollen, tongue fuzzed up and feeling like sandpaper. These drugs are cruel. I will tell my GP I cannot take them ever again. I went downhill from getting the drugs, at first, I imagined it was the infection coming out or maybe worse, I have cancer, but I really should have read these reviews-the negatives are spot on. I too was referred to the ER, who probably weren’t aware of the side effects or that they could be so bad."

For Bladder Infection "After the 2nd day of taking this medicine, I became feverish and was shaking terribly, and the muscles in my legs and arms were so weak. I couldn't stand on my own two feet, and I am an avid walker. I was vomiting and couldn't eat. I took it for 4 days, and by then I was totally frozen - couldn't move at all. The pain in my body was horrifying. I thought I was a goner. I knew I was getting dehydrated. I tried to drink enough water. I finally stopped the meds. Three days later, I took a trip to the hospital in an ambulance because I couldn't stand, my vision had gone horribly wrong. I got to the hospital, and they said it was the side effects from the meds. All they did was give me fluids and a bag of antibiotics, and then sent me home, and today, 6 days later, I'm still having trouble standing on my feet. Not happy."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Had these antibiotics twice, and twice I've had sepsis-like symptoms. Not sure if connected to these, but seems very strange. High temperature, buildup of fluid, and thickening of my lungs. Low oxygen, low blood pressure, and high blood cultures. Not sure of exact numbers, but within sepsis marks. I was put on two different lots of IV antibiotics and fluid, but can't pick up where the infection was. Weird is an understatement."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Started taking this medication this morning, with the only UTI-related side effect being fever and fatigue. Now, since taking two doses of Nitrofurantoin, I have excruciating shoulder and neck pain. In case a UTI wasn't uncomfortable enough by itself, now, as much as I want to sleep, I can't even lay down without constant muscle pain. I will be contacting my primary care doctor in the morning to send in another prescription because this is unbearable."
