Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "After taking 2 pills, I suddenly experienced chills and a fever of 101, and a severe throbbing headache. I called the doctor, spoke to the nurse, she advised continuing taking it. My gut told me not to. Later in the evening, I developed tingly fingers. I called my doctor, and he said to stop taking it, I may be having a serum reaction. It's been over 24 hours since I have taken Macrobid, and I still have a terrible throbbing headache, upper back ache, and a low-grade fever. This medication is poison!!! I can't believe it hasn't been banned! Will pass the word to everyone never to take this horrible drug!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I was diagnosed with a UTI and kidney infections. They started me on Macrobid two days ago, and yes, death on a doornail set in. When your body utilizes this drug to flush your system, it doesn't just run to your bladder and ta-da! Your body handles this infection with all its defenses, so you SHOULD expect to feel really icky for about a week. I am floored at today's rush in society to get everything done right now or right away. Every body needs time to heal and recover. Allow yourself the precious gift of rest and recuperation it needs, and unless you begin to spike a fever or experience an allergic reaction, hang in there and know it's okay to take some time off to nurture you."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I have been prescribed Macrobid 3 times in the span of a year for UTIs. The first and second time I took Macrobid, I had no side effects at all. The third time I took it, I had a 101 fever within hours of the second dose, shallow breathing and cough, and diarrhea. My fingers were tingling too. I immediately stopped taking it, and it's been not quite 2 days yet, but the fever is going away. I'm going to have to look into natural remedies for UTIs now. I admit that I thought everyone else on here was 'crazy' writing about their side effects when I had none...until it happened to me. Just because you didn't have any the first time doesn't mean you won't next time, like I did."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I cannot overstate how much I despise this medication. It may be effective in getting rid of bladder infections, but I never got that far. I used this medication twice (I gave it a second go, thinking my previous experience might've been an anomaly). Wrong. Within 2 days, each time, I had severe flu-like symptoms. They included: chills, mild fever, muscle aches all over, sharp pains in my stomach, severe nausea, vomiting, pounding headache, and extreme fatigue. I was told to take with a meal and drink lots of water. I felt like I was drinking 2 gallons a day...until I couldn't drink or eat anything without throwing it up. I stopped taking it the second time, after 3 pills, and it took 2 full days (and lots of Tylenol) for my symptoms to subside."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I am 66 yr. old and get a lot of UTIs after going on the bike, in the pool, and apparatus at the gym that causes friction in that area. I usually get ciprofloxacin, which doesn't affect me much. But, Macrobid causes stomach troubles, nausea, chest and lung problems, chills, fevers, dizziness, palpitations, headaches, and more. I didn't have time to say 'no' to the walk-in doc who gave me this again, but I will never, ever use it again. I know it's going to take another week to get 'semi-normal' again, but this med takes me down every time."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Going through the reviews. Sounds like most of them are just on the wrong antibiotic. Nausea, fever, chills, etc., are also signs of a bad kidney infection. Not saying they are all like that, but some of them could be."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Macrobid for a 3-day course, 2 doses a day. The first day I seemed to be getting better, but then I woke up at 4:15 am the morning of the second day with chest pains. Throughout the day, I suffered from headaches, chest pains, muscle and joint aches, nausea, dizziness, fever, and chills. Now on the third day, and though I'm not feeling as ill anymore, I'm still dealing with chest, back, and stomach pains. Can't even tell if treating the UTI because I've been in so much pain. Worst experience I've ever had with antibiotics - would definitely never use Macrobid again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I have been on Macrobid twice for bladder infections. It cleared them up, but the side effects knocked me off my feet for days. Fever of 101-102 and flu-like achiness and wicked headaches the entire time I was on the medication. The first time I took it, the doctor said I must have had the flu too. The second time I called him after three days and had him switch me to another antibiotic."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Have had UTI 3 times now and treated with Macrobid. Third time I only had a pain in my right side and within taking the first pill my heart rate shot up and got excruciating headaches, and I had shivering and a high temp, basically flu-like symptoms. Though I was dying, I was bedbound and thought I had sepsis as most of the symptoms matched. I was crying in bed as I felt so bad. On the second day, the temperature came down and shivering was gone, but headaches were still there, and I mean they were so bad radiating pain into my jaw. I had no appetite either but forced myself to have something as it states in the pack you should for absolution. Saw doc today and she took me off them, will wait for results to see if I need something else. Glad I looked on here, thought I was going mad. I’m sure that Macrobid is fine for some people and I was the first two times, but not now. UK review"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I began to take Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin mono) 100 mg caplets on last Thursday for a UTI. Within 24 hours, I had severe muscle aching, headache, and fatigue. Within 2 days, I had even more severe body aches, joint pain, extreme fatigue and sleepiness, dizziness and difficulty walking, as well as a fever of 101-102 degrees. I went into a walk-in clinic, but symptoms progressed, and by Sunday, I was in the ER thinking I was in septic shock. I assumed my infection had spread, I had no idea it could be a reaction to the antibiotic. After a barrage of tests, including a CT scan, the only possibility is that this poison was wrecking my health. This medication caused me a huge amount of problems. I stopped taking it yesterday and still have a headache, dizziness, muscle aches, and low fever. I can only hope the damage caused by Macrobid is not permanent."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Very effective antibiotic-cleared symptoms within 24 hours. Side effects are terrible. You will feel like you have the stomach flu or food poisoning-fever, chills, and extreme nausea. I would recommend taking it with a big meal. I feel marginal (not wonderful) eating a big lunch and taking it, but eating a relatively small dinner and taking the pill 3 hours later, I spent the night thinking I had another illness besides the infection. Probably will ask for a different antibiotic if this happens again. Aside from slight nausea, I never react to medications, and this is all new to me."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "The first time I used this medication, it was great. Just now, I was prescribed Macrobid again. It took care of the bladder infection symptoms in two days. Next day, fever was 104, headache, fever high only one day, nausea, fatigue, high pulse (100), stomach pain, neck pain, muscle pain, lack of appetite. Stopped taking this med after 8 days and will never take it again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I have never written a review for any medication in my life. But, oh my goodness! This was a horror. As soon as I took my second Macrobid pill, I became so ill that I had to call an ambulance. I had an extremely high temperature, chills, and pain in my legs and chest. I had all the side effects, and some aren't even mentioned on their leaflet. Can someone please tell me how long it will take for symptoms to go away, as it's the next morning and I'm feeling so unwell still? Thanks."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Was prescribed this antibiotic for a bladder infection at emergency care. Doctor said there were few side effects when I asked - was hesitant to take it because I'm very sensitive to antibiotics, but was assured this was the best medicine for me with the least side effects. Wrong! By day 2 I was totally lethargic, feeling very irritable and running a low-grade fever on and off. Thought temp was from bladder infection. Finished 6-day course, went to my doctor for a urine recheck, and since my culture appeared clean, was told I could stop a day earlier. Two days off the medicine and I'm still feeling like crap, extremely tired and lethargic with a low-grade fever of 100.5. Feel like I have a minor case of the flu, but since reading other articles I believe it's from the antibiotic. Never again will I take this."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Attended emergency for statin use-related UTI. Started medication the same day and the next morning vomited. I took the next prescribed dose and 2 hours later could not take a deep breath, had a very tight, heavy chest, and I thought I was having a heart attack. By the time for my next dose, I had a headache, muscle pain which kept moving, felt sweaty and feverish. The next dose created more of the same, with increased labored breathing. I had never felt so weak or nauseated. Sleep was intermittent and weird dreams. I did not continue, called my GP and stopped immediately. I am a 60-year-old woman and this is the most horrible drug I have ever been prescribed."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I started this medicine for my UTI. I always ate a meal with this pill. I really did not experience any sickness. I was on it for 7 days. I have trouble with anxiety, but it was not too bad. However, it seemed like this medicine made me more anxious at times. Then, on my last few days, I felt a little weird at times. Then, on my last day taking the medicine, I woke up with a scratchy throat. Then, by evening, I had a fever and bad chills. I didn't take the last pill because I felt so bad. My head kind of hurts too. I don't know if it's this medicine for sure or if I'm catching a virus."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I’m 56 years old and have never had a problem with antibiotics. Prescribed Macrobid 2x a day for 10 days as I had my third UTI in five months. UTI symptoms quickly vanished, BUT by day 5 I couldn’t think, had zero appetite, headaches, and a sore throat - assumed virus. Day 8, my face and neck began to swell, sudden SEVERE back pain, fever, teeth chattering, vomiting - saw the doctor, test showed kidney function off/dehydration, though I constantly had fluids. 3 days off - still sore throat, tired, but my head is clear and energy/appetite returning. Another kidney function test next week. PS this is NOT only for people with allergic reactions - never again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Omg... I have been so sick since I started this medicine. I have been lying in bed for two days straight with a headache, fever, chills, sweats, throwing up, can't eat anything. I am a mother of two, and I literally don't know what I'm going to do if this doesn't go away... their dad goes back to work tomorrow. Ughh pray for me! Just ask your doc for something else because this is garbage."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This is the third time I have tried Macrobid and the worst. High fever, chills, sweating, nausea, and terrible headache. I spent the whole day and night in bed. This is the very last time I will take this. My doctor did not think this terrible pill would cause a fever in spite of me telling him it did twice before. I told him I am off this pill and am now waiting for the culture. I will not ever be taking this again."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Horrible. After two, I came down with a fever (102.6) and awful chills. The worst was the body aches - in particular, my upper back. My gut told me it was the medicine and not a sudden case of the flu. I went off immediately, and within 15 hours felt 100% myself again. Everyone is different, and this drug is not for everyone."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Oh my gosh, I am so glad I've read these reviews. I thought I was becoming neurotic! I had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and during the tests, I got an awful UTI. The pain was awful, especially when I had to lay on my tummy in the MRI scanner on day 2 of the medication. My doctor gave me a 7-day course, and I felt terrible. Just like everyone else, I had stomach cramps, loose stools, rapid heartbeat, the worst headaches ever, burning eyes, high temperature, freezing feet and hands, queasy, and unable to eat much as it hurt my stomach too much. I was so weak that I just laid down all day. I thought it was because I was run down after the cancer diagnosis, and I finished the course last night. I am so pleased to find out I'm not crazy and look forward to it leaving my system today. Can't tell you if my UTI is cured because I still feel so bad. But hope for a miracle and that I'll feel fine by teatime. Xxxx"

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Started taking Macrobid last week, and after the first dose, I felt off. I ended up leaving work early that day because I had intense nausea, chills, and general lethargy. Later that evening, it had progressed to a fever, balance issues, and it's like I had no legs under me. Took one more dose, and it was the same issues. Decided to discontinue the meds, and the side effects went away almost immediately. But that didn't help the bladder infection. I started to think maybe it was the infection that had caused all of the side effects, despite not having any now. So I took another dose this morning. You guessed it, ALL of the side effects from before. So I contacted my NP who prescribed Cipro instead. My pharmacist says that the adverse reactions are pretty rare, but I can't imagine taking the full course of Macrobid. The nausea was the worst! I honestly felt terrible!"

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I was prescribed Macrobid for a bladder infection. After I took the 2nd pill, I got severe shortness of breath, chest pain, high fever, and diarrhea. Although not as bad as the first day, the symptoms continued into the second day of taking them. On the 3rd day, out of the blue, my vision was blurred/impeded by what I can only describe as bursts of light/sunbursts for about 20 minutes, followed by severe headache and fatigue. Very scary! My bladder feels a bit better, so I decided to stop the medication after only 3 days. Will ask the doctor for something else with less side effects if it continues."
