For Diverticulitis "While they do the job as intended, the Flagyl makes you sick and nauseous. Food and drink lose their taste, and you can gag from just trying to swallow the pill. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis last year and spent 12 days in the hospital with a perforated colon. Luckily, the meds did the job and kept me from having to get surgery, which would have resulted in a colostomy bag for 4-6 months. This year, I had some symptoms again and went to the doctor right away. I got the meds again (Flagyl and Cipro 500 mg each twice a day). 48 hours in, I am feeling better from the disease but not so much from the meds. To get past the taste of the pills on the way down, I started taking it with a spoonful of honey."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "My NP put me on a regimen of Flagyl 500 mg twice a day for 7 days for urinary symptoms I was having, although my cultures were negative. I followed the regimen for 5 days before finally stopping. My side effects were severe and had me ready to go to the ER: stomach and pelvic cramping, continual discharge, complete loss of appetite, extreme nausea when attempting to force myself to eat solid food, and general nausea when not eating. I felt extremely fatigued, emotional, and anxious. I was on the verge of several full-blown panic attacks at work. I'm not sure if my symptoms are taken care of by Flagyl because the side effects are so much worse. Day 2 off of the drug and having the most severe side effects yet."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "My doctor gave me this because I had bacterial vaginosis. Not even 12 hours into my first dose, I got the metallic taste in my mouth, then severe stomach cramps and nausea. I'm on day 5 and have had bouts of nausea throughout the course of my medication. My appetite has gone way, way down, and I'm so tired! I literally will sleep 12 hours and then get up for 2, then go back to bed for another 4! Having trouble staying awake at work, but it is doing its job!"

For Trichomoniasis "I was prescribed the metronidazole 2g mega dose after testing positive for trichomoniasis (had symptoms of pelvic pain, cloudy urine, and pain during the swab test). I opted for the single dose instead of a week because I hate antibiotics! Was really anxious to take the medicine due to many reviews saying it made them ill. I had basically zero adverse side effects! Took the pills about 30 minutes after eating a full meal (I ate pasta and yogurt for dessert for the probiotics) and an hour before bed. Pills tasted bitter but nothing as bad as some reviews claim. Fell asleep with no problem. Had only a mild headache (if anything) the next day and no nausea. My symptoms (pelvic pain, pain during urination) seem to have stopped on day 2. Will get retested to be sure, but so far so good with this medicine! My advice: TAKE IT! Just eat 30 min before and stay hydrated! I also have been taking heavy-duty probiotics since to help rebuild the good bacteria."

For Dental Abscess "I was prescribed the 400 mg version to be taken 3 times a day for 5 days to treat a dental abscess. The tablets did a great job at treating the abscess, but they did have side effects. I did research the tablets prior to taking them and heard they were not the nicest, so I was prepared for that. After a day of taking them, I felt quite drowsy for 2 days. Once the drowsiness subsided, I began to feel nauseous but did not vomit, and I developed a terrible taste in my mouth. If you do have to take them, I recommend taking them in between your food, as I found it helped with the nausea and also to avoid the immediate nasty aftertaste. Overall, I found them to be brilliant at treating the abscess, so would take them again."

For Dental Abscess "Positive experience - I was prescribed a 5-day course of metronidazole 400 mg 3 x daily for a tooth abscess. I wanted to review after terrifying myself from reading all the negative reviews. Fortunately, this medication worked almost perfectly for me. On the first 2 doses, I didn't eat properly with it and did experience some nausea, but from day 2, I made sure I ate a full meal with it and took the medication halfway through eating with a large glass of water. No further side effects for me. Cleared up my tooth abscess and I felt fine on it. I didn't drink alcohol at all in the days leading up to taking it and for about a week after. My dentist warned me that drinking alcohol with it would cause a severe reaction, so definitely avoid that."

For Diverticulitis "First time I had diverticulitis, I was prescribed metronidazole and Cipro. The metronidazole was so horrible tasting it would make me gag and throw up. I got some double zero gelation capsules and put the pill inside the capsule. It worked like a charm, no more gagging. It works for bad tasting pills as well as chalky pills that get stuck in your throat. Good luck!"

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Will never take this medicine, Flagyl, again. The first day, I started with a headache. Then came the lack of appetite and nausea, which caused me to lose 3 pounds. Next was feeling tingly in my hands and full-out panic, anxiety, and depression. I called my doctor, begging to get off of this medication. Thankfully, I just took my last dose. I will never take this again."

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "I went to the ER with acute diverticulitis and was prescribed Metronidazole along with Cipro and pain pills. I was administered a couple of pain shots and thought I could go home and take these meds and get better. Three days later, I was back in the ER and let them admit me this time. The terrible headaches, horrific taste in my mouth, nausea, and vomiting were about more than I could bear. I have had sleeve surgery, and so my stomach is small, but this gave me such bad heartburn and indigestion, I could not imagine a medicine making a person this sick. I also had diarrhea with every bathroom trip and very dark urine. I couldn't even stand the taste of water, or the food I ate tasted horrible, along with a lack of appetite, lethargy, and lightheadedness. I finished my prescription of ten days, but I hope I never have to take this horrible drug again. One good thing about it is my diverticulitis pain is gone, and I pray it will never return."

For Dental Abscess "On Metronidazole for the 4th time due to a wisdom tooth which keeps becoming infected (they cannot take it out as it is sitting on a nerve and may leave me with permanent facial numbness). Overall, this drug is amazing, and I always find that the infection disappears within 3-4 days of taking it. However, I have a very weak stomach, and therefore it hits me hard and leaves me fairly nauseous most of the time. As well as this, I tend to feel 'spaced out' and not quite myself. On the whole though, the pros outweigh the cons, and the side effects are well worth the results! ***Note: I've been told to take ibuprofen and paracetamol whilst on Metronidazole this time to take away pain/swelling, etc., and I found this amplifies feelings of nausea x1000.***"

For Diverticulitis "This is my first time with a Flagyl and Cipro combination. It's been 3 days, and I am so nauseous, and the lethargy is awful. I'm not sure I can continue the combination, but I will be calling the doctor Monday morning. And I do have Zofran. These side effects are terrible."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Was prescribed Flagyl for diverticulitis. All I can say is that I had to stop this medication after 6 days. My side effects included: numbness and tingling of my hands, dark urine, high anxiety, headaches, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and difficulty sleeping. My dosage was 2x250 mg tabs three times a day. I am in my 60s, and without a doubt, this is the medication that has given me the most side effects."

For Diverticulitis "I was diagnosed for the 1st time at the ER after a CT scan. Cipro 2x and Flagyl 3x per day were prescribed. I can't feel any pain b/c I'm too focused on the nausea, dizziness, bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Day 2 - I had an important meeting to attend (that I could not miss), the metallic taste was awful, and the smells when I walked in the room made the nausea unbearable. Out of desperation, I popped 2 pieces of mentos spearmint gum in my mouth and sucked on them, and within minutes felt so much better. The mint soothed my stomach and I was functioning. I went on to another meeting thereafter and did just fine. Thereafter, I tried peppermint candy but it didn't have the same effect. I'm on a clear liquid diet too, which doesn't help."

For Diverticulitis "Personally, after reading these stories and not knowing if everyone (besides those who stated) was taking Metronidazole with something else. I have had a few flare-ups, and I cannot take a combination of Cipro/Metronidazole as this causes the weird feelings and extreme lethargy. Metronidazole alone (besides the bad taste when you pop it), no problems. Occasionally slight nausea and bloating, but nothing else. I just don't take the combination anymore, which was horrible. Straight Metronidazole now, 500 mg, 3 times a day, 10 days...done."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Everyone's body will react differently to meds, genetics. Just because I had a bad experience doesn't mean you will. Took with a full stomach of bland food, 16 oz water, and took a daily probiotic. My experience with this medication was horrible. I was unbearably anxious, had a rapid heartbeat, intense pelvic pressure, bad stomach cramping, nonstop nausea, vomiting, and explosive diarrhea. This was my second time with this medication, with the same bad reaction. I had to discontinue both times. It took 3 days to start feeling better, 5 to 7 until normal. I'll never take this medication again. I'm sure it's good for others, but not me. I had cancer, so I've taken a lot of medications. Never had to stop another medication from side effects before, but I was scared to the point of going to the ER. Never again."

For Bacterial Infection "Omg, I loathe taking these pills, it's all I can think about all day, and I'm only on day 3 of a 7-day treatment for BV. I feel awful: severe headache, fatigue that has kept me in bed all 3 days, nausea, loss of my appetite, dizziness, bloated, gassy, muscle aches like I have the flu. Is there nothing with fewer side effects to take for this? I barely had any BV symptoms to start with, I feel like a dysfunctional zombie. There's no way I'm gonna make it through 4 more days. I can't function like this. Everyone's body is different, my body doesn't react well to this."

For Diverticulitis "I was put on this medication for diverticulitis, along with Cipro. I have been taking it for 7 days. I feel like I have been hit by a truck! No energy, sick to my stomach, diarrhea, along with a feeling of never being able to get comfortable. I have 7 more days, 3 times a day, to go! I don't think I can do it! I feel absolutely miserable. Just left a message with the Dr to see what they say about stopping it."

For Trichomoniasis "No, I’m not a fake spam comment or whatever you want to call it! I took my whole prescription as one dose, as directed, and my side effects lasted about 5 hours. I took the medicine around 7:30 am, so I’ll say the effects stopped around 1 pm. I had mild diarrhea about 30 minutes, and after that, I just felt a bit nauseous! Nothing too serious, and it worked great, no more infections for me whatsoever!"

For Trichomoniasis "I was prescribed Flagyl 500 mg for trich and BV to be taken twice a day for 7 days. All I have to say is thank God I'm on my last day with this med. I've had horrible side effects, like constant headache, nausea, tiredness, loss of appetite, and it feels like I've been hit by a car. On the bright side, though, I no longer have a discharge or odor whatsoever. I definitely learned my lesson about having unprotected sex, that's for sure! Well, good luck on this med, it does work!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "This medicine does its job, my symptoms from the infection cleared within the first 3 days out of 7, taking 2 pills a day. It worked and cleared the infection, so I'll give it 10 stars, but the side effects are for sure mentionable. I felt fine other than a metallic taste in my mouth for the first 2 days, then the extreme nausea rolled in. Imagine the feeling you have seconds before you puke, 24/7 for days on end. I also had headaches and slight stomach pain. I took probiotics while on the medication, and they didn't do anything. I still recommend this antibiotic because it does its job, just be prepared for the side effects."

For Trichomoniasis "Tried to take it the right way by just water, automatically spit it out. Tried the milk thing, nope, bread, nah uh. The only thing that worked without tasting it was putting it in peanut butter, hard to swallow but it's better than tasting that awful pill. Only side effects I have were loose stool, dark urine, and a little nausea (because I didn't take Zofran after like I'm supposed to). Four more days until I'm finished, I wake up every day dreading to take this pill. Makes you never want to have unprotected sex again. Thanks for the lesson."

For Diverticulitis "I have had a few bouts with diverticulitis close together and was prescribed Cipro and Flagyl, both strong antibiotics. When trying to take both at the same time, I felt very sick and nauseous. I went online to read more about each of these meds. Someone with experience suggested taking them an hour apart, and when taking Flagyl, take it in a spoon of applesauce because it leaves a bitter taste if it touches any part of the inside of your mouth. Put it in the back of the mouth with applesauce and swallow with lots of water. Also, do not take your Cipro with milk or yogurt, it tells you on your med info on the bottle and paper info. The last time, the prescription for Flagyl was doubled from 250 mg to 500 mg, and it made me throw it up."

For Diverticulitis "I am taking metronidazole 500 mg three times daily for 10 days along with Augmentin (cannot take Cipro) for diverticulitis. This is my fourth round of these meds this year for recurrent diverticulitis. It always alleviates the nasty problem but returns several weeks later despite taking each dose of the regimen religiously. I will have a colonoscopy soon and will likely require a colon resection. The drugs produce very uncomfortable side effects including nausea, diarrhea, metallic taste, fog, headache, and fatigue. I have a suggestion that has helped tremendously in reducing side effects. Purchase Floragen in the refrigerator section at your pharmacy and take one an hour before your first antibiotic dose each day. It lines your gut with “good” bacteria and seems to help 80-90% with nausea. I’m still “off” but very manageable. I will finish metronidazole in 3 days and pray that I never have to take another dose."

Yes, it made me nauseous so bad and gave me a headache that had legs and carried on 'til the next day, maybe a tad longer. The horrible sickness I felt was nothing in comparison to that disgusting trich-about 5 hours after I took it, I peed the darkest, longest pee, and all this stuff came out..."
