"I have 3 more days of my treatment, and I can honestly say I have none of the symptoms that most of the comments I'm reading here. The only one which you can't avoid is the metallic taste, but it goes away very fast. At least for me, it has. I don't have constipation or diarrhea with my treatment. In fact, I have regular bowel movements with no problems. I guess, like most medications, it affects people differently. I just hope it works this time around. H. pylori is a nasty bug and very hard to get rid of. Most people don't even know they are infected."

"I hardly have any side effects (day 4/5). One positive effect is that I am much happier. Not sure what or why. I did have a headache tonight, and I felt kind of like I am withdrawing from caffeine. (I don't drink coffee.) Only one occasion of constipation a few days ago, but I ate a lot of fiber to take care of this. Urine is darker than normal in the morning, and that's with the same amount of water a day, an average of 4 pint glasses per day. This drug seems to have weakened the parasite in my gut, I can't wait to get the other meds. I sleep well and have no other side effects. Maybe some subtle balance problems when walking."

"So far I’ve had no side effects except for acid reflux/heartburn. I’m on day 5 out of a 10-day course and can’t wait to get rid of this nasty bug. I’m taking the H. pylori combination of omeprazole, clarithromycin, metronidazole, and Pepto Bismol."

"I don’t know how effective it is because I’m only on day 6, also taking another antibiotic and Prilosec. I’m so sick, nausea, diarrhea, weak, tired. I really hope it works because I can’t take this much longer!"

"Metronidazole should be removed completely from the list of antibiotics. I was diagnosed with H. pylori, and I hate how this particular antibiotic makes me feel. The doctor said to take it with food, but how when this disgusting pill makes you lose your appetite? And when you do take it with food, you get nauseated. I threw up and felt weak... REMOVE METRONIDAZOLE, IT'S NO GOOD."

"Been taking metronidazole for H. pylori, along with clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and pantoprazole. It is awful, the horrible taste remains in my mouth all day and night. Extreme tiredness and pain between my shoulder blades. I am on day 9 of 14 and don't feel like I can take it anymore. Will never do this again."

"Taking this medication alongside Clarithromycin really caused a bitter metallic taste in the mouth. It caused me to produce more spit in my mouth and turned the color of my stool to pitch black. It is prescribed for 14 days, being taken 2 times a day. Currently on day number 5 and hoping the taste will subside. Here's to happy health and a better stomach."

"I took Flagyl 400 x 2 for 7 days, and I will outline what I experienced. 1 - They made me feel very sick all day, every day. 2 - I was never off the toilet. 3 - I felt very low in mood, agitated, and argumentative. 4 - Fatigued, never felt so tired. 5 - My legs ached from groin to my knees. 6 - My lymph nodes in my groin and neck swelled up. 7 - The skin on my hands peeled. 8 - I lost around 4 - 6 kilos. 9 - The taste in my mouth was disgusting. 10 - I couldn't sleep. 11 - I felt unsafe driving as I was so tired and dizzy. Finished these a few days ago, and I called my GP to report to check if these side effects were normal... simply put, they said yes. Should clear up in 5 - 7 days!! Today, my legs still ache, I am exhausted with no energy to do anything. My mood is improving, and I'm no longer agitated. My glands are sore in my groin and neck. Hope these wear off soon!!! Good luck taking these, and hopefully, if you do, you'll be feeling better soon."

"This drug has not been a good experience for me (I'm on Day 10 of 14), and I really hope it destroys the H. pylori. I've had gastritis off and on for years until an attack so painful I had to go to the ER. The taste is almost unbearable. It makes me want to eat just to temporarily get rid of the awful taste. Good to know I am not the only one who is creating a lot of foul saliva, too. In the first 2 days, I was very dizzy, and since this was one of those side effects we are 'supposed to contact' our doctors about, I called. Two days later she insisted the dizziness and nausea were due to a virus. Today I ordered some Neem & Aloe Vera Inner Gel because there is pretty good information on these two botanicals' impact on H. pylori. Never again."

"I have been taking it for 4 days, it's a 500 mg tablet. It was doing good, except for the 5th day. I had nausea and a burning in my throat. Do take it on an empty stomach, which I have, except this time I ate about 30 mins after."

Metronidazole "Amoxicillin always was so hard on my stomach, my stomach - more than H. pylori. A family member told me to get over it because they were an army med. Do not get over it. The metronidazole shouldn’t make you feel this way and is truly the cure."

"Horrible, horrible, horrible. This med sucks!! It took away my normal life from me. I can't go to work anymore. I'm always, and I mean always, nauseous. I'm crying all day, every day. Horrible stomach pain."

"I had to go to the hospital. Bending over in pain. It was hurting something in my stomach, like it was creating an ulcer. I stopped taking them and got something different. Haven't taken it yet as I'm scared."

"I'm taking metronidazole 500 mg. I'm also taking Prilosec OTC 40 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg. I have diarrhea, black stools, ringing in the ears, my vision is weird (maybe brain fog, I don't know), and weakness, chest pain that won't go away, high heart rate. I had a left-side spasm yesterday, and it was really weird. I didn't care for it. I don't know what to do. I don't want to take this, but I don't want to have H. pylori. My muscles feel weak."

"I began taking omeprazole, clarithromycin, metronidazole, and amoxicillin. I am now on my last day (14 days total). The first few days were okay, but within a week they improved. Side effects were just uncomfortable but not bad: diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness, metallic taste in mouth, headache, heartburn, and nausea. My side effect symptoms come and go. Advice: If you are reading these experiences, please try not to stress as much, as everyone is different. I find that taking a probiotic helps a lot to reduce stomach discomfort and diarrhea. Make sure to eat light throughout the day and change your diet to mainly BRAT diet (bland) as well as prebiotic foods, this will let your ulcers heal as well as avoiding bloating and other stomach discomfort. Avoid alcohol at all costs, as well as sugar and bread, because they promote the growth of H. pylori. Eat 2-4 hours before you go to bed or lay down and keep your head and torso propped up, because it helps digestion as well as avoiding GERD symptoms."

"Worsen the symptoms that I had before the metronidazole. I have side effects of a metallic taste, stomach upset, insomnia, feeling much too tired, pain in my whole body, anxiety, joint pain, and especially knee pain. Now I am on the 11th day of a 14-day course, so I have 3 days left. I hope my stomach bug is removed after this course."

"I'm on my 5th day of Flagyl, Clarithromycin, and a stomach pill, and the worst thing for me has been the bad taste in my mouth, and the good thing is it's only for about 15 minutes and it goes away. Today I had diarrhea like water, and while it was happening, I got bad stomach pain. I have had some stomach discomfort, some cramping, and uncontrollable gas at night. Treatment has been uncomfortable, but so far not unbearable."

"It is 2 months since taking this as part of my H. pylori infection, and I have constant swaying motion, sinus infections, and pressure in the back of my head. I feel like I'm in a foreign body, and my head is about to explode. This drug has left me seriously ill."

Metronidazole "One of the worst meds I've ever had the misfortune to use. In addition to making me feel continuously nauseous, it affects the saliva in your mouth. Your saliva is as if you have chewed on the most possible bitter thing you can think of. Saliva is bitter 24/7, which in turn causes what little food you can tolerate to taste wretched. Dosage was three times a day for 14 days. After day 7, I reduced it to twice a day, which has helped the symptoms of nausea and bitter saliva a little, which is better than nothing. Otherwise, I would have stopped taking it altogether. I'm depending on the clarithromycin to pick up the slack."

Metronidazole "I have taken this medicine three times this year. I took it in late July and did okay with it. Not even a week later, I had a rash, went to the doctor, it was shingles. Took it again in early October, 250 mg four times a day. I thought I was going to die. Very moody, trouble remembering things, rapid heart rate, my blood sugar dropped one evening, and I’m not a diabetic. My skin felt like it was crawling. I stopped taking it on Wednesday night, woke up Thursday morning with yet another rash, and yet again, SHINGLES! I will never take this medicine again."

"I was diagnosed with H. pylori for the second time in 5 years following a stool test confirming the bacteria. I was put on clarithromycin 500 mg, metronidazole 500 mg, and omeprazole 20 mg twice daily. The first couple of days went well, just the bitter taste that everyone describes. I’m on day 6 of a 10-day treatment plan, and today I feel so awful. I couldn’t sleep last night, had severe insomnia, stomach cramps and burning, also anxiety. I hope that it’s just the pills getting rid of the bacteria because it was so random, and I know these drugs are wreaking havoc on me. I hope this will be all worth it in the end. Got a follow-up a month from now."

Metronidazole "Started taking this for the H. pylori infection and I dread it. My doctors have me on it three times a day for two weeks, I am currently on day 8 and the side effects of the drug have not lessened or gotten better. Nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, terrible headaches, and feeling like I’m a ghost overshadowing my body have all been side effects. It hits me the worst in the morning and at night because that is when my stomach is empty. I have found that food helps during the day, but not full and complete meals. I definitely do not recommend this drug to anyone and I am sorry if you, the reader, are taking it with hopes that it won’t make you sick because chances are, it probably will. But please do not let this deter you, it hurts but it will make you feel better in the end. Important note: the drug can make you have EXTREMELY dark and brassy colored pee."

"It’s a rough go, so hopefully it works! Worst side effects—lingering headache and the god-awful taste that a) you get taking it and b) the secondary taste as the medicine secretes through your saliva. It’s horrendous and makes appetite and wanting to eat very hard. My latest trick—and I’m not telling you to do it, it just works for me—is taking the pill and coating it in a thin coating of Hershey’s magic shell chocolate and then swallowing it. That will not get rid of the secondary taste. I also have experienced the brain fog and altered smell—everything smells like rotten eggs. Again, hope it works."

"Took for 10 days for H. Pylori along with two other medications. Left a slightly odd taste in my mouth and made me a little drowsy. No other significant side effects, and cured me of this nasty bug."

"I've just finished these and felt a bit strange and dizzy. Was glad the 7 days were over! However, 3 days now since I finished them, and today I am feeling awful, terrible diarrhea and sickness, so it doesn't necessarily finish when you stop then. You still shouldn't drink alcohol for at least 2 days after stopping them!"
