For Bacterial Infection "Just finished taking a week’s worth of Flagyl, twice a day. It’s brutal, but your body will adjust. It helped me to sip ginger tea when nauseous and to eat a small meal and drink a full glass of water when I take it. As a nurse, I just want to remind people that even if this drug is wrecking your body, always consult your doctor before stopping treatment. If you only take 4/5 days and are prescribed 7, the bacteria left in your body will have time to develop an immunity to meds, and your infection will rebuild and turn into a superinfection and the antibiotics won’t work next time. There is a reason antibiotics are given over prescribed amounts of time, and stopping them before completion is going to bring on something much worse than side effects. Trust me, I wanted to die taking this medication - many sleepless nights and bad side effects - but an antibiotic-resistant infection is much worse than one week of side effects. If you absolutely have to, call your doctor first. Good luck!"

For Diverticulitis "Taking the antibiotic combo metronidazole and Cipro for a flare-up of diverticulitis and now on day 4. My side effects are that I feel so dreadful, very weak, no appetite at all, dizzy, nauseated, night sweats, vaginal discharge, diarrhea, and I have lost 7 lbs already. Forcing small bits of food down as I have to eat something, drinking lots of water, feel nauseated. I am in the UK. This medicine is utterly brutal and toxic, but my pain is nearly gone. Longing for day 7 to end the drama."

For Bacterial Infection "Went in for my Pap smear and found out I had BV. I was prescribed Flagyl (1 tablet 2x a day). The first day I only took one pill during my lunch break but forgot to take the second that night. The next day I took two pills as prescribed (morning and night). The following morning I noticed dark urine... allegedly that's a 'rare' side effect. I’ve also experienced dry mouth, a metallic aftertaste, headaches, and loss of appetite. Other than that, I do see an improvement already. I’m glad these pills work quickly, just hoping I won’t have to take it ever again after the 7th day."

For Diverticulitis "Was given this for diverticulitis and after day 3 of taking woke up in a cold sweat, hair soaking wet and feeling faint. Slurred speech and overall feeling of dying! Went back to ER and they said it was side effect of this medication. They told me to continue no matter what, told them I'd rather die and threw the medication away. I'm still alive and doing well without this nasty medicine!"

For Diverticulitis "Took Flagyl and Cipro together - felt worse than I did before - all the side effects everyone is mentioning. However, the alternative - raging infection - not really an option. Taking my diet seriously moving forward."

For Bacterial Infection "I almost think it’s better for people to read this if they also had a bad reaction and don’t want to feel so alone because I have heard of this working really well for some people, as with any drug. It seems to me that if you do have a bad experience with this, it isn’t mild, but extreme, as was the case for me. I don’t do well on many antibiotics, but this one was in a class of its own for me. It took me over three months to feel somewhat normal again. It went from bad hives to feeling like my joints were trying to leave my body, to feeling incredibly dizzy and nauseous, to stomach pain. It sounds dramatic, but I have never felt worse on any antibiotic. What it was prescribed for was so much easier to handle than the side effects of this train wreck. Every inch of my body felt off on this medicine. Even mentally, it gave me anxiety. The only antibiotic that came close to this one as far as feeling horrible is Cipro."

For Dental Abscess "This medication could have saved my life! I had a root canal gone awry. The emergency dentist prescribed Clindamycin and Flagyl stat. Could not take the Flagyl as I had swallowed Listerine (has alcohol in it). The next morning an Endodontist redid the root canal, and he said to take the Clindamycin only. Two days - and a LOT more pain and swelling later - I found myself at night with enormous swelling spreading to my upper mouth with more throbbing pain. With nothing to lose, I took one dose (500mg) of Flagyl. Within 2 hours I felt no pain - it was like someone took water out of a balloon. Thank goodness, I believe I had an odd bacterial infection. I'll take both antibiotics for the duration. No alcohol on Flagyl - bad side effects!"

For Diverticulitis "I'm a 36-year-old active female diagnosed with diverticulitis. I took the combo of meds and am on day 7 now. I work out 6 days a week and have had to modify my workouts and weight lifting because I feel absolutely drained, weak, and muscles ache. (This, of course, was advised against by both doctor and pharmacist but alas, I am a knucklehead.) I have the metallic taste as well in addition to nausea with the meds. However, I would prefer these side effects to the pain associated with diverticulitis."

For Diverticulitis "After several years of diverticulitis and some very severe attacks including bleeding, I gave in and medicated with Flagyl. I only took 200mg twice a day and my symptoms disappeared, relatively no side effects other than dry mouth. I was vigilant with diet and NO ALCOHOL! Feel great but worry about re-occurrence."

For Bacterial Infection "I’m on day 4 of a 7-day treatment for BV (bacterial vaginitis) with Flagyl. I feel amazing. I was warned by my doctor and pharmacist of alcohol and side effects. On my 2nd pill, I did get abdominal pain and minimal diarrhea, but that was it. I expected it to continue, but so far I feel better than ever. I feel like it helped me in so many other ways than just BV treatment. I feel healthy and awake. All meds have side effects, some worse than others, and some experience more than others. My experience so far has been great."

For Diverticulitis "It seems I've had experiences that a lot of these other people do with feeling worse than I did before on these medications with the Cipro and Flagyl. I'm nauseous, I'm dizzy, I have a foggy brain, I can't eat, the taste is horrible, and I feel like I can't function. I've been on this for the second time in a year, and it's doing the same thing, same side effects. I don't like feeling this way at all. I can't drive or go to work. I've been on it for 4 days out of 10, and it's Christmas! My pain has subsided, though."

For Diverticulitis "I have been taking Flagyl and Cipro for Diverticulitis, and it seems to be helping. After my stay in the hospital where the doctor put me on a food rest for several days, including IV antibiotics, he prescribed these two meds. There are some issues I have had taking them, such as low energy level, limited concentration when getting tired, but most of all nausea. I recommend if you are going to be taking either or both of these meds, always take with plenty of food (meal time, not just a snack), don't plan on doing too much (you won't have the energy), and ask your doctor for an as-needed prescription of a nausea medicine just in case you need it. I have needed something for nausea at least once daily since on the medicine."

For Bacterial Infection "Flagyl antibiotic sent me to the psych hospital! Within 24 hours of taking Flagyl, I was having side effects of being super drowsy, couldn't eat, having panic attacks, hallucinations, and so depressed I couldn't even get out of bed. I was also really confused and just out of it. I went to the psych hospital, where they made me finish the course, and it took WEEKS before I felt okay mentally. In its defense, it got rid of the BV. Flagyl is one of the most powerful and potent antibiotics out there, and I would only recommend it if you really need it."

For Bacterial Infection "I've never had any medication make me as sick as Flagyl has. The nausea is so bad, it has been waking me up at night. I'm calling my doctor today to get a different medication. I'm halfway through, but I can't handle another day of this. Absolutely never again."

For Diverticulitis "I have to say that metronidazole is a horrible antibiotic as far as side effects go, especially when one has to go to work. I experienced a lot of dizziness, migraines, muscle pain even in my heart, jittery, and drowsiness. I'm sure Flagyl is the same. Next time I'm asking not to get this prescribed by my doctor. Better yet, take it off the shelf."

For Diverticulitis "This drug caused uncontrollable diarrhea and stomach upset, and I had to stop taking it after just 2 days. This was given for mild diverticulitis, and I got better with a liquid diet for several days, then low-fiber soft food, and then graduated to regular foods. I had another bout of diverticulitis 4 months later and just did the diet - didn't go to doctors or use antibiotics. For my mild cases, this is the way to go. This drug caused more harm than good."

For Dental Abscess "At first, I felt a bit nauseous and had a whole body feeling like I had the flu when I started the meds. My dose was 500 mg four times daily. I ate an Activia yogurt daily and took Ranitidine to help with nausea. I would find that slowly sipping a caffeinated soda would also help with the nausea and give more energy. I had a severe infection, and it cleared it up."

For Diverticulitis "Day 3 on Flagyl and Cipro. I thought I was having a heart attack. This stuff has horrid side effects. Discomfort in my chest and arm. Foggy-headed feeling, dizziness, unbalanced, headache, very nauseous, metal taste, very blurry eyesight. No energy, at 55 it is not a good thing to feel this way, especially when you are overweight and out of shape. This is only day 3. I don't think I can take this stuff for 7 more days. They say the IV kind is worse though. Supposedly it's helping (I do feel less pain in my abdomen, I think). If I make it through this stuff, I bet I will watch what I eat and make better choices in the future. I called the pharmacy and the doc, and both said to stay on it, Cipro 2X daily and Flagyl 4X daily. Scary stuff."

For Diverticulitis "This is my third day on Flagyl and Cipro, 3 Flagyl and 2 Cipro per day. The Flagyl does not leave an awful taste in my mouth, but some food smells awful...the herbs and flowers in my garden smell nice, however. I also feel very anxious, but know now this is a possible side effect. It is a slow, depressing recovery, but Flagyl worked for me before. I will be very careful what I eat from now on, and I am going to try some liquid meals and eat gelatinous foods...chicken stew, avocados, beetroots, prunes....it's very hard to maintain a healthy diet when you have to work."

For Bacterial Infection "I went into the hospital on Saturday with extreme stomach pain and constipation. CT scan and blood work showed colitis with a bacterial infection. Prescribed 500 mg Flagyl 3x a day and 500 mg Cipro 2x a day. I've taken Cipro before but had never heard of Flagyl. I made the mistake of reading reviews and became panicked. But most people don't leave reviews when things are good. I'm on day 3, but things are okay. I have to take it with milk. Keeps the nausea and metallic taste to a minimum. I have mild stomach upset (but nothing compared to before) and a headache. It's not pleasant, but I'm almost halfway through. My suggestion is to eat and drink different things. I also found spacing out the Flagyl and Cipro helped with nausea as well. The medicine seems to be working. And the side effects have been bearable so far. Take each review with a grain of salt and remember-every body is different and will respond to things differently."

For Diverticulitis "Used Flagyl in combo with Cipro after 4 days of IV antibiotics for a bad diverticulitis flare-up. No major side effects, provided that I used probiotics and yogurt religiously during the week-long course. I would take a probiotic about 1-2 hours before dosage, then eat yogurt, then another probiotic 1-2 hours after each dose. I was on a soft diet anyhow. Very little nausea, but quite manageable with ginger and peppermint tea and some rest. Also, drinking lots of water helped as well keep things moving and somewhat normal."

For Trichomoniasis "Omg, reading all these comments scares me. The doctor prescribed the 4 pills to take at once. Two days it was clearing up. After my period came, the trich came back. I went to get retested and I'm now waiting for results, but I already know I still have this infection. This med should work the first time. I guess it's not strong enough to kill the infection in one or even two doses. I'm scared, and I hope it goes away soon."

For Dental Abscess "This was the first time I received Metronidazole for a tooth infection, usually they prescribe Keflex (cephalexin) or Amoxicillin. I would say that the Metronidazole worked quicker at easing the pain and it wasn't a capsule so I had an easier time swallowing it. However, I have been suffering serious nausea followed by diarrhea since I began taking it. Then last night, without thinking about the interaction, I had a few drinks and spent the night vomiting and very ill with nausea, dry heaves, etc. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WITH THIS MEDICINE and always read your labels and accompanying info. I usually do, but I've never had any kind of reaction to an antibiotic so I got lazy, I suppose, because it was clearly stated on the bottle."
