"I was very active before getting pregnant, but had weight problems and irregular periods since puberty. When I got pregnant, I went from 130 lbs to 230 lbs during the pregnancy, and nothing I did helped me lose weight. After several months of trying everything, I went on metformin and finally started to lose weight. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic at that time. I went from 215 to 145 in 4-5 months after starting the medication. I quit taking it, and I didn't gain any weight back. Then I got pregnant and had a miscarriage and gained 25 lbs in about a month. After trying all kinds of diets and exercise, I got diagnosed with PCOS and started taking it again. I've lost 25 lbs. I still haven't been able to conceive, but it's only been a few months."

"I'm 21 and I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago. I had gained around 100 lbs and was miserable. I found it impossible to lose weight - I was eating a bowl of lettuce a day and working out for two hours a day, and I still either gained weight or maintained. My doctor put me on 500 mg of metformin three times a day. I was worried about side effects, but the only things I have experienced are acid reflux and slight nausea - but the nausea makes me less likely to snack on things, so it's actually kind of a good thing. I've been taking it for around 3 months, and I only started losing weight on it last week. Since last week, I've lost a pound a day without even trying!"

"I am 31 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS 2 weeks ago. I had my period regularly when I was 14 for one year. I haven't had a period since I was 15. I was put on Metformin 2 weeks ago. In the first week, I lost eight pounds. My husband and I have been married for 5 years and are trying to conceive and have been unsuccessful so far. I'm really hoping this will work. I take Metformin 500 mg 2x a day. I only had dizziness, upset stomach, and diarrhea for the first week. These have all subsided."

"Been having irregular periods since I have known myself having a period. I was tired of going to the doctor for it. I am now on my 3rd month of metformin, and my period became regular. Coming on its own. I am now thinking about having a child. I know it will be hard, being that I was diagnosed with PCOS. However, I have faith because metformin does work. I am on 850 mg every night."

"Following a miscarriage in November 2014, my doctor had me on folic acid for 9 months before running some blood work tests. Found out I had PCOS the 20th of August after the results came back and started Metformin HCL the same day. I take 850 mg once a day, and I found taking it halfway through my meal has done away with 99% of the side effects. I know it's only been 10 days since I started it, but I feel less hungry and like I don't crave the junk food I did before. Here's to hoping it works!"

"I had my son at the age of 18 years old. Soon after, my period stopped. For years, I tried different doctors, and they didn't know why my period just stopped. Some doctors even told me I had gone through menopause. Ridiculous!!!! I'm 32 years now, overweight, and I was diagnosed with PCOS. I started on metformin 500 mg/1x. I hope I get my period, and I hope to get pregnant. I enjoy reading other people's stories, I thought I would share mine too. It's good to know I'm not the only one going through this. I will update my results!!!"

"I have taken Metformin 500 mg once daily in the last 6 months. Finally, I got to the endocrinology, and they put me on 2000 mg per day. Now I am slowly increasing the dose - I had bad diarrhea, cramps, and everything you can imagine! Hopefully, the side effects will go away - because otherwise, I have no problem with it. Slow but steady weight loss, no more food cravings, and crazy frustration if I can't get my hands on carbs. I noticed I don't really want to eat oily food, junk food... which is brilliant!"

"I have been using Metformin for about 1 month and have already seen results. I've lost 20 lbs and have gotten my period on a regular basis. PCOS is not fun. I've become very emotional, but with the proper medication, diet, and exercise, it makes it a lot easier to cope with."

"I was diagnosed with PCOS at 22. I am now 29, I have had regular periods due to birth control, but my doctor mentioned metformin for me to go on because my husband and I want to start a family. I have read some successful stories, and I am so glad to see them. I was 280 lbs at one point, I was sad and hated myself for being that big, but I got through it. I started going to the gym and trying to eat better, I lost 80 and then some, but I have put back on about 15 and pushed me back to 200 lbs, and it's hard to keep the weight off. At the gym 5 times a week soon, trying to get healthy to have a baby besides going on the medication. Wish me luck!!"

"I have been taking metformin for only a week. But that being said, I have noticed straight away the changes that it has made. I have had PCOS since I was 19, I am now 27. I have never had any medication for my PCOS. I had gone to my doctors as I was stressed about the fact I had not had my period in over 4 months. As I have been quite regular considering here and there a few misses, etc. At the start of taking the medication, I was quite sick, but that lasted two days. I have decreased in appetite, and my period actually came! So, so far, so good. Soon, I will be on a higher dose as I am currently on one tablet! Fingers crossed it keeps working! I know it's only one week in, but to be already getting good results, I just had to share."

"I was prescribed this about two months ago for PCOS (my doctor gave me the option to treat the symptoms or treat the root cause, and I chose the latter). She started me out on a low dose and worked up to a full dose, which helped a lot with side effects. I felt mildly nauseous all the time until I started focusing on really eating right. If I eat a good, healthy dinner right before I take the pills, I don't feel sick at all. Another side effect, I've lost all interest in alcohol because it makes me feel terrible immediately. This has forced me to change my lifestyle, but in a good way. I've lost some weight and just generally feel better."

"I got diagnosed with PCOS on 7/15. Started metformin HCL ER 1000 mg mid-August for a week and then bumped up to 1500 mg the next week. I am 5'4" and started at 197 lb. Now on 10/7/15, I am at 184, so a 13 lb loss. I did get diarrhea when I first started, but that resolved itself after a week. I find that I have very little appetite for greasy foods. If anything, when I eat unhealthy food, I get nauseous, so I'm avoiding it now. I go to the gym every once in a while and still managed to lose weight! Meeting my doctor next week to see if weight loss pills are an option!"

"I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago and was prescribed metformin. When I first began taking it, I felt very off, like I was in a fog. I suspect this was my body adjusting to a lower blood sugar level (pre-diabetic). This began wearing off after a couple of weeks, and I felt better than I ever have. It really helped. My dosage is 1000 mg 2x daily. I have now lost over 100 pounds over the past 2 years, though I can't say if the metformin contributed to weight loss, as I did a drastic lifestyle change; but I suspect that it has. Now that I am healthier, though, I am starting to get that same foggy feeling as I had in the beginning. I think the dosage is too high now that I am overcoming PCOS through a healthy lifestyle. Just keep that in mind."

"I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and my doctor prescribed Metformin. He had me start with 500 mg/day until I feel good enough to increase the dose. The first couple of days, I was a little nervous, so I was very careful not to eat carbs, but so far, I have had very minimal side effects. I have been taking it for 1 week now, and yesterday I increased my dose to 500 mg with breakfast and 500 mg with dinner (I have the extended release). In the first 4 days, I lost 5 lbs just because it really helped me feel less bloated, and it took away my appetite. I used to think about food 24/7 and constantly crave sweets, but I no longer have that issue. So far, I feel great on it, and I will see how 1500 mg/day goes."

"Metformin is amazing. I am 5'2" and I went from 137 lbs to 117 lbs. I have PCOS, and it made me lose 20 lbs. I used to have painful periods, and now I can barely feel them. I take it to stimulate ovulation. I have been on it for about a year and a half. Side effects only if you eat too much sugar, you will have diarrhea. Other than that, it's awesome. Keeps me fit!"

"I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16 years old. I am now 26. I used to use a pill that made me have regular periods. When coming off the pill 2 years ago, I only had 4 periods a year. After my partner and I decided we wanted a baby, we tried for one and a half years before contacting a doctor who started me on metformin, 500mg 2x daily. Side effects lasted about a week, like stomach pain and feeling sick. I have been on it for about five months now and had four periods, about 38-42 day cycles. This has been great, no signs of pregnancy yet, but hopefully soon."

"I was never diagnosed with PCOS, but I have had all the signs: weight gain, facial hair, acne, etc. I took myself off of Metformin back in 2012 when my doctor prescribed it due to the side effects. I couldn't handle them. I was losing too much weight and was constantly sick. My facial hair, acne, and weight gain had become out of control in the last year, so just one week ago I requested Metformin. I had not had a period since December 2014, and it is now May 2015. After just a week, my appetite has decreased, my skin is clearing, and my period came yesterday, all on 500 mg a day. I was told to increase this week to 1000 mg. I'm hoping for a baby one day soon. My only child will be 12 this July, and it's time."

"Grade 9, I was given birth control (BC) to regulate my periods as I could not naturally create them on my own. On and off BC for a few years, testing to see if naturally I would get it - no luck. Advised to remain on BC until I wanted to have children, as this would keep my PCOS symptoms and hormone levels regulated. I am now 30 and needed to stop taking BC because of excessive weight gain and mood swings. I was prescribed Metformin from my family doctor on Feb 16th (gradually working up to 1000mg, 1/2 pill increase weekly). February 26th, I got my first natural period since Grade 9. AMAZING! Side effects: stomach pains, diarrhea, and nausea, manageable with a good diet - hope to have success with weight loss like others I've read below. Good luck!"

"5 ft 3 in and my highest weight was 220 lbs. I've been struggling with PCOS since childhood. Always struggled with weight up and down. Had joined a gym, changed diet, and struggled to get the weight down and stay down. Carb cravings were really bad and worse with emotional eating with no shut-off. Doctor put me on 500 mg twice a day. I started off with once a day because I wanted to step up to the full dose. 1 week in and I'm amazed. Bloating is decreasing. Weight is dropping. Cravings are pretty much gone. Before, the strong craving for carb food was like walking down a tunnel with a light on guiding me, and now the cravings are almost gone, but like in a fog, so not really noticeable enough to act on them. I love this medicine. 1st day was fine. 2nd day was a little nauseous. 3rd day had some bathroom issues. 4th day everything seemed to start to level off. I'm having to make sure I eat enough calories now because my appetite is nowhere near where it was before."

"I started with 250 mg only. At day 5, I started 500 mg. Weird side effects: mild diarrhea, quite bearable, but stomach pain on the left side, bloating, and flatulence. And I quit within 10 days. Now, after a month, I started again from 250. Same, stomach pain has started on the upper left abdomen. I hope it's a minor side effect, and it won't harm my stomach. But I wonder why this left side pain occurs. It's not a cramp, but a discomfort that sometimes radiates to my left side chest and left arm and then disappears."

"I hadn't had my period for over half a year due to PCOS, which puts me at an increased risk of cancer. Doctor prescribed 500mg of Metformin to see if it would work in bringing my period back. I read a lot of scary side effects, so I eased myself into it and started on just half a 500mg pill, once a day. I didn't experience any upset stomach or side effects at all. I've now been on this for 7 days, and I just woke up and got my period! I'm so happy... this is crazy. What a miracle."

"I've been on 500 mg once a day metformin for 70 days. I went a year and a half without menstruation after stopping birth control. I've dropped 2 pant sizes, lost approximately 22 lbs, and today I got my first period in what feels like forever. I am so extremely happy with this medication. I only experienced the gastro symptoms for 2 days in the beginning, and then my body got used to it. I accompanied the medication with trying to eat a little healthier. However, I didn't astronomically change my diet. Cutting out sugary drinks was the big one. I just drink water now. This drug has been making big changes for me personally, and I'm extremely satisfied."

"I have been taking metformin for 6 months along with birth control pills. I've lost 18 pounds in those 6 months. I was taking 1000 every day in September 2015, but in December 2015, the doctor increased me to 1500 mg. I do still have side effects. I haven't become pregnant. I'm scared to let the birth control pills go because I'm scared my period won't come on naturally. I am pleased with my weight loss, I went from 299 to 281, and I hope to keep losing. I'll let the birth control pills go when I've lost a little more weight. My PCOS has been a problem since I was 17. I'm now 35. I hope I can at least conceive one child of my own."

"I have been diagnosed with PCOS for years and have never been given anything for it. I became pregnant in 2003 and now have a beautiful 11-year-old. In May 2015, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have been prescribed Metformin. I take 500 mg in the morning and 500 mg at night. At first, I felt pretty yucky from the medicine. Now that my body has gotten used to it, I feel fantastic! I just had my first period in months and am finally beginning to feel like myself. I wasn't aware that Metformin works well with PCOS until I did some research on the medication. I'm killing two birds with one stone! Wish it helped with my hypothyroidism."
