"I'm sick over the discontinuation of meperidine. It was the only pain RX that helped and didn't make me feel sick or lightheaded. I took it for years, and all of a sudden, it's gone. A pharmacist from Pfizer said they would resume production sometime in January due to a missing ingredient. Now I'm taking Tramadol, and it's meh... and clogs me up something fierce."

Meperidine "I have a handful of issues: migraines, pancreatic issues, broke my back and neck, and have a torn rotator cuff, etc. In the past, they used Demerol and it helped the pain immensely. Now they use Dilaudid in the hospital, which lasts maybe an hour. I'm allergic to morphine, and they give oxycodone for outpatient, but once again the pain relief doesn't last long. Demerol keeps pain away for much longer and offers more relief. Please bring it back."

Meperidine "I was prescribed Demerol by my dentist this morning. I have to have oral surgery tomorrow. I took a 50 mg tablet and waited for the pain to subside. It didn't, so I took another one. Still no luck. I called my dentist back, and she told me to take 2, which I did. Still not much relief."

Meperidine "I'm allergic to all opiates except Demerol. I have a screw attached to my spinal nerve at L3 from faulty titanium. The screw could not be removed. Living in CA, I was on Demerol pain management and signed the form for my PCP. I moved back home to FL and pain management doctors refuse to prescribe Demerol/Meperitab. My copay is $1000 at all pharmacies per month, which I can't afford on SSA. 50 mg every 6 hours, PO. It helps 100% of spinal and pancreatic pain. I only took it when I had pain, sometimes every 12 hours. A motorcycle accident ruptured C6-7, L3 to sacrum and pelvis."

Meperidine "I was driving to the airport this morning when intense pain creeped up on my blank stomach area. It kept getting worse to the point I had to pull over, the next thing I knew, I was in a fetal position next to a phone booth. Somehow, I was able to gather strength and drive a couple blocks to the nearest hospital. I checked in, trying to remain calm, but I remember having to go to the bathroom, and then there I collapsed at once again in a fetal position because of indescribable pain. They finally called my name, and I sat in the back room waiting and waiting, moaning and moaning, the people at my cot were pleading with doctors to help me. I think the doctors thought I was faking for drugs. I remember throwing up, the pain was so intense. It felt like I was in another realm, the pain was so relentless. I had never made sounds like that before. After what I thought was an eternity, a doctor’s assistant shot me 75 mg of Demerol. The bliss was unbelievable, I'll never forget how it took the pain away miraculously, I thought."

Meperidine "I've had migraines since I was a small child with no results until 11 years old when a doctor gave me Demerol. Now I went to the ER at 50 years, and no more Demerol is available. I now have severe hypertension, had 2 aneurysms, and back surgery. I want Demerol for pain, my life sucks."

"I just had a 14 mm kidney stone removed surgically and now have a kidney stent. Two days after the indwelling stent was placed, I began having severe back and abdominal pain. In short intervals, the pain was equivalent to a small kidney stone itself. I have been taking Lortab off and on for years for different reasons. I know that they wake me up. Needless to say, I had 24-hour pain levels that didn't allow for sleep if I took the Lortab every 4 hours. I told my doctor that, but he wouldn't prescribe any 'sedative' pain-relieving medicines. I called in the third day after no sleep and said something MUST be done. He finally prescribed me Demerol 50 mg. One didn't do that much, however, I upped my dose to 2 tablets and I'm currently almost pain-free. Good night."

"I need pain medication about 3 times a week. The only pain medication that has worked for me (and I have tried many others) is meperidine, 50 mg tablet. Now it has been taken off the market. Does anyone know if this is a permanent situation or will it be available in the future?"

"I took meperidine after surgery, it helped greatly for the pain for about 6 hrs. It also helps you sleep and get rest from pain. The only downside was throwing up when I first started taking it, so I had to take nausea pills with it at first."

"After 2 neck surgeries, more bulging discs, and having fibromyalgia, the only thing that has helped me with pain that didn't cause a reaction was meperidine. I can't take anything else, regular Tylenol does nothing, and I am allergic to ibuprofen. I would take it sometimes 4 days in a row or if a severe storm system was coming in. After that, I wouldn't need it for 3-4 weeks. I am very upset that they would discontinue something that has helped so many people. These companies need to get this prescription back on the market."

"I took Demerol for over five years for chronic back and shoulder pain. I have had seven shoulder surgeries and two back surgeries. I tried all pain meds and had terrible reactions. When this was suddenly unavailable, I had no withdrawal symptoms at all. Had to start over finding a new BT med. Found that Percocet didn’t make me sick and works okay. Also have fentanyl patch for years. They need to bring this back. It works for so many."

Meperidine "I don't know if it's me or what, but I was given Demerol (along with Vistaril and Vicodin) after my ankle surgery, and it hasn't helped at all. I was admitted to the hospital twice, where I received Dilaudid. That did the trick. I had a screw removed from my ankle, which had shattered, and the doctor drilled through my fibula bone. After I was released, I was given Vicodin to be taken one hour after my Demerol and Vistaril. That seemed to work. I was surprised that the Demerol needed a 'kick,' so to speak. I would definitely ask my doctor for something more again if I ever had to go back on it."

"I have hurt with migraines since I was 3 years old. I am now 46 and have been diagnosed with familial hemiplegic migraines! Most people suffer with this condition and don't even know it! DEMEROL seems to be the only thing that actually helps to ease my pain and allows me to function, even though it does make me drowsy. But the migraine goes, no pain."

"It’s infuriating to read reviews from doctors w/o pain who get paid to write articles on behalf of pharma that dismiss meperidine so RX manufacturers can make more money? I took it for years - didn’t make me sick or high, it got rid of the pain, period. Now I take tramadol and ibuprofen because the others make me sick, it’s mediocre and I have to take more. Meperidine is no longer a moneymaking RX, is the real reason it’s gone. Why would any pain patient want fentanyl with people dropping dead at an alarming rate? Bring back meperidine."

"I have systemic lupus, and I’ve tried every form of pain reliever and treatment. The only thing that has helped with minimal side effects is Demerol. I don’t understand why it was taken off the market. The statement that it had too many side effects. Well, for many of us, it had less side effects than many of the other drugs that are still out there. They’re all the same in terms of things they can cause, but they are not all the same, and whether they are effective for certain people, there is not another pain reliever that helps me."

"After a bad stint operation, I have been left with serious nerve damage that causes me severe pain daily. I already had enough pain due to bulging discs and curvature of the spine causing sciatic nerve pain. After four operations in a one-month period involving instruments being inserted into my ephemeral artery, there is a lot of nerve damage in my right leg now as well. Needless to say, it's difficult to get up each day with intense pain in my back and leg as soon as my mind registers consciousness. Besides 'regular' daily pain, I also have the occasional 'sciatic lock' pain. Anyone who suffers from sciatic nerve pain knows what I mean. Only experience can convey the pain. After trying every drug on the market, only meperidine works for me!"

Meperidine "Demerol is the only medicine that works for quick relief of pain. I suffer from chronic pain syndrome. I take 30 mg of methadone 4 times a day and then a fentanyl 50 mg patch every 48 hours to control the pain."

"I have CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), nerve palsy, compressed ulnar nerve bilateral, two torn shoulders, and other associated nerve issues. Had several surgeries, and nothing has helped the pain, just gave me more and more pills that didn't work or I was allergic to them. The pain management clinic I was going to, since this all happened, did their best to help me without giving me the one pill I knew would work and I wasn't allergic to, Demerol. (I now know it as other names.) I finally got on the appropriate dose, and my daily pain levels went from 9-12 to 4-5. Not perfect, but I was more than happy. I could do things again. I can live with 4s and 5s pain levels. I rate meperidine, Demerol, etc. the best pain medication out there. Please bring it back! What I would like to say is that Demerol, meperidine, etc. is the best drug out there for not just me, but for many more."

"I had a doctor accidentally hit a nerve with a needle, so I can't be too hard on the procedure, since Medicare requires it prior to 'radio-frequency therapy.' I had used it before, and no drug came even close to since I was a tennis professional and tended to be a 'roadrunner' on the tennis courts; now I pay dearly. The onset of meperidine is about 15 minutes versus 1 hour with Percocet, and it lasts far longer with no real side effects. *Now it is gone off the market!*"

Meperidine "Have had back pain since my early 20s. Chiari malformation, arthritis, scoliosis, 2 herniated discs, just to name a few issues, but could look after my kids, a house, and live with the help of two 50 mg Demerol every 4 hours. I have a special needs son that depends on me. Since Demerol has been removed, I have had no quality of life."
