For Postoperative Pain "I was given fentanyl for post-surgical pain. Was supposed to be working when I woke up along with the liposomal bupivacaine. Well, the fentanyl was just as much of a joke as the bupivacaine. Why did the sole of my foot feel like it was literally on fire? This stuff is absolutely worthless. When I woke up, I was wide awake - as if I'd had a double-strength cup of coffee - but then, having a number 10 on the pain scale will do that to you. I'll say it again. Fentanyl is a joke - or at least was for me. These high-falutin drugs are worthless compared to the old stand-bys. If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

For Anesthesia "The patches wore out usually in 24 hours or less. I would go into withdrawal symptoms prior to the next patch. I had very bad thoughts, pain, shakes, and severe breathing problems, which seemed to be a side effect. Not a good experience, I am trying to go cold turkey to get off it. I felt way better on 3-4 Vicodin than 75 mg release fentanyl."

For Pain "My husband's ins. keeps changing the quantity allowed a month, he also takes 4 mg Dilaudid for breakthrough pain. Now they are rejecting a prescription that is for the same exact amount, except that instead of 10-100 mcg patches and 5-50 mcg patches (I don't know why they won't give him 10-50's like the Dr. prescribes), she wrote it for 20-75 mcg 2 q 3 days. The reject message says maximum daily dose of 0.36. Isn't this the same as 1-100 mcg and 1-50 mcg q 3 days?"

For Anesthesia "Having had multiple surgeries at a young age, I was used to ether. I asked the anesthesiologist what he was using, and he said fentanyl. I had a line in between my small finger and the next, and when he put the chemical in, it started burning, and I told him to wait. It blew up like a little balloon on my hand, and I told him, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, it hurts.' Within 10 seconds, I was out. My hand was swollen after surgery like a balloon, and they replaced the line for a bag later, and it blew up like Popeye. It achieved its purpose, but the last thing I felt was major pain and burn from that shot!"

Fentanyl for Chronic Pain "To be 100% honest with you, I tried fentanyl for about a month or so, and the first patch at 12.5 micrograms actually worked and lasted about 2 hours, but then it suddenly stopped working, so the doctor upped my dosage to 25 micrograms, then up to 50 micrograms, and then she skipped it to 100 micrograms, and they didn't do anything. I had no nausea, no pain relief, no stomach cramps, absolutely nothing, and I was wasting money on this stuff that did nothing. So I would definitely stay away, and plus these patches were only going on my skin, one patch every 3 days, which is absolutely ridiculous. A waste of time... and for a 400-pound man that has severe, severe chronic back pain, I could have easily used four or five patches a day, easy, that's if they worked. I'm just going to say this: stick to fast-acting medications because they work for me."

For Pain "A gastroenterology clinic used fentanyl on me, along with Versed, for a colonoscopy. They had me take it in pill form. All I can tell you is that it didn't work. I lay awake and in pain for the long period of time before they finally wheeled me into the operating room. Then I was wide awake all through the procedure, feeling every bit of the pain. Fentanyl is rubbish."

For Breakthrough Pain "Fentanyl is a miracle pain reliever. I suffer from pinched C-6 with nerve damage; hand, arm, face pain, migraines, loss of feeling in certain areas. I also suffer severe pain in my hip and lower legs from an unstable ileum, with loss in certain areas."
