"As prescribed, I took this drug, clarithromycin, for 5 days, 500mg once a day every morning for bronchitis. It took 10 days for the productive cough to end, had some residual cough for another 3 weeks. I had diarrhea while taking the drug, lost my taste and appetite, and had a lot of gas even after the dosage ended. This happened even if I was taking probiotics. My concern now is how to restore my gut microbiome health and balance."

"Clarithromycin worked well for what it's supposed to do, but the side effect of that weird taste and smell is awful. I can't eat anything or even smoke without vomiting from the taste and smell of everything."

"Never again. I took only one dose before going to sleep. There was almost no sleep. Nightmares, feeling terrified. Instead of my child, I saw an old, scary face sleeping on the bed, and now I know how insomnia feels. I would discourage all single parents who have no help from taking this something. By the way, I had to give it 1 out of 10 as the site didn't let me put 0 out of 10."

"OMG, it was only after getting my tablets from the pharmacy I realized how bad the side effects were the last time. I feel so sick with hunger pains, heartburn, horrible taste in my mouth, mouth constantly filling up with water, mad dreams when I can get some sleep, not to mention the constant trips to the loo. Never again will I take these. I feel sick enough as it is."

"I feel better to see that I’m not the only one going nuts about this antibiotic (not even allergic to anything on top of it????). Got a 5-day treatment at 500 mg every 12 hours. Already fatigued by bronchitis, but it’s not going away (the fatigue). The really bad taste in mouth, anxiety, confusion, scared of going out to work because I don’t feel good. Although I see improvement in the bronchitis. The meds are making me paranoid - good luck to all. Just had the last tablet this morning, and I still have a bit of secretions, so I wonder if it’s okay. Oh forgot to mention I crashed my doctor's office yesterday needing antidepressants and anxiety pills because my mind is not well. He gave me a prescription for it as I’m suffering from burnout all mixed with my bronchitis, and the tablets didn't help my mind....."

"Was prescribed 500 mg tablets, to be taken twice daily. I took the first tablet and felt a little sick afterward, however, this was manageable. But it was completely different when I took the second tablet. I took the second tablet around 10 pm and went to sleep at 12 am, however, at 12:30 am, I woke up to the worst taste I’ve ever experienced (the way I would describe it would be tasting like gas). Immediately vomited due to the taste, and also realized my bed was soaking due to excessive sweating. I therefore had to change my bed sheets and PJs. I tried to go back to sleep but woke up an hour later again to the taste which was even stronger and immediately started vomiting, and again I was excessively sweating. Everyone reacts differently, but that was very traumatic. Vomiting, taste disturbance, and sweating are all common side effects, so I know I will not be taking this medication ever again."

"Quit taking clarithromycin after 4 days after contacting my ENT. This medication has left the nastiest taste in my mouth... all day and night! Food doesn’t taste very good. It has also given me a lot of gas."

Clarithromycin "The last time I was prescribed Biaxin was for a case of bronchitis (possibly pneumonia, but it was hard to tell without a chest x-ray). I was given 500 mg twice a day. I was on it for 2 days when I was woken up late at night with the worst heartburn I ever had. It was so severe, it felt like I was having a heart attack. The next day, I went back to the doctor and begged them to give me something else (I was then given Levaquin and had no problems with it). I'm about to see the doctor for a sinus infection and will tell them not to give me Biaxin. The horrible metallic taste I always got from this medication was bad enough, the severe heartburn has put it onto my 'no-go' list of antibiotics."

"The doctor said I had a virus turning into bronchitis. That night, I started having a tingly numbness all over. Went to the hospital the next day, and they said it was a reaction to the medication. They did some medication in an IV. I'm still having trouble after almost a week. They said it was the one day of medication. I know not everyone is allergic, but be careful if you are sensitive. The numbness has moved to my face and is extremely scary."

"Prescribed this antibiotic as I have allergic reactions to amoxicillin. Other half can’t quite believe how bad I'm feeling. Will share this site with him. Have been very phlegmy and been sick every night with coughing fits that have brought up all the phlegm. Presume the meds are getting rid of the gunk in my lungs but feel dreadful and paranoid of being sick again. No metallic taste but fluttering heartbeat and low mood too. Just exhausted."

"I developed a head cold, which went to my chest a few days later. After spending the weekend shivering and bringing up green phlegm, I went to my GP. He told me it had turned to bronchitis and prescribed clarithromycin; 500 mg twice daily on the first day, then 250 mg twice daily for a week. After 24 hours, I was feeling so much better, no shivering, back eating, and I was up about. I went back to work by Wednesday. The only side effect was mild diarrhea on two days. Very effective antibiotic!"

Clarithromycin "I get sinus infections, which tend to lead to bronchial infections every eight to ten weeks. I’ve seen every specialist there is and given numerous puffers to try to prevent the infections, but to no avail. When I get an infection, the only antibiotic that clears the infection is Biaxin. Doctors keep wanting me to not take Biaxin for fear of building a resistance, but no matter what’s prescribed, it doesn’t do the job and it’s only been Biaxin that finally clears it in a matter of days. It’s so deflating having this condition and being told that the infection will eventually be resistant to Biaxin, but after ten years, it’s still the only antibiotic that works. I felt I was the only one in the world that experiences this, but I’m rejuvenated reading similar accounts."

Clarithromycin "I developed bronchitis, one of the worst bouts I'd ever had. The doc at the walk-in clinic prescribed Amoxicillin as she thought I had a sinus infection that went into my chest. After 5 days, my cough got worse, so I went to my MD who thought the bronchitis had morphed into pneumonia, so she prescribed Biaxin. By the 2nd day, I started noticing an improvement in my symptoms, although I started getting that horrid metallic taste in my mouth. I started taking it in the middle of a meal, and that started to help. Day 5 now, chest symptoms are much better, although I'm battling extreme fatigue that seems to be getting worse. My heart rate has gone up, and I'm not sleeping. I'm being woken up with an irritated throat and can't get back to sleep. The metallic taste in my mouth seems to be getting stronger, and the worst part is the reflux it seems the Biaxin is causing, making my throat very irritated and feels swollen. I can't stand this for another 5 days."

"Excellent as it cleared up the quinsy in my throat along with pneumonia. No problems at all with the mild side effect of diarrhea being outweighed by the benefits of getting rid of the severe bacterial infection I had."

"Takes time to work. Day 7 of a 7-day course of clarithromycin 500 mg, not convinced it eradicated the infection completely. Still coughing and producing discolored phlegm, debilitating muscle pain and stiffness - I had to crawl up the stairs as my legs and back were affected, losing balance, therefore felt at risk of falling. Insomnia yet extremely fatigued, couldn’t contemplate tasks as I had little energy, vivid dreams (no mental health issues), was unable to focus, queasy, stomach cramps, food regurgitation (slept with raised pillows and second daily dose a few hours prior to bedtime to avoid GERD), constipation then diarrhea day 6, bitter sensation in mouth more so upon waking up, metallic tasting foods, lost appetite, fleeting headaches."

"I was prescribed this 500 mg medication twice a day when I had a sinus infection and some chest congestion. The first 3 days I was only taking 1 pill a day (because my sinuses were so bad I misread the label). On the 4th day I took 1 every 12 hours, and I had 100% water diarrhea until my body was completely empty. I think the dosage is too strong for me and my stomach. I will break the big pill in half and continue taking 1/2 (250 mg) every 12 hours instead. Every body is different. When you're allergic to penicillins, any other medication can be a blessing rather than go without."
