Precautions
It is important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits. This will allow your doctor to make sure the medicine is working properly and to change the dose as needed. Blood tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
Report any signs of an infection or reaction at the catheter site to your doctor right away. Also, if you develop a sudden fever, check with your doctor right away.
This medicine may cause your blood pressure to decrease, which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Avoid getting overheated during exercise or hot weather while you are using this medicine. Saunas, hot baths, or sunbathing may make you feel dizzy or faint if you get overheated.
This medicine may increase your risk of bleeding. Be extra careful to avoid injuries. Stay away from rough sports or other situations where you could be bruised, cut, or injured. Gently brush and floss your teeth. Be careful when using sharp objects, including razors and fingernail clippers.
Do not suddenly stop using this medicine. Stopping the medicine suddenly may worsen the symptoms of your condition, which can be dangerous. Check with your doctor first before stopping it completely.
Your doctor may want you to carry a medical identification card stating that you are using this medicine in case of emergencies.
Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.
Serious side effects of Orenitram
Along with its needed effects, treprostinil (the active ingredient contained in Orenitram) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking treprostinil:
More common side effects
- accumulation of blood at the site of injection
- dry, red, hot, or irritated skin
- feeling faint, dizzy, or lightheaded
- feeling of warmth or heat
- flushing or redness of the skin, especially on the face and neck
- headache
- redness, hardening of the skin, or rash at the site of injection
- swelling
Less common side effects
- blurred vision
- confusion
- dizziness, faintness, lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
- sudden sweating
- unusual tiredness or weakness
Incidence not known
- black, tarry stools
- bleeding gums
- blood in the urine or stools
- bone pain
- changes in skin color, pain, tenderness, or swelling of the foot or leg
- chest pain
- decreased urine output
- difficult or labored breathing
- dilated neck veins
- extreme tiredness or weakness
- irregular breathing
- irregular heartbeat
- itching, pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness on the skin
- paleness of the skin
- pinpoint red spots on the skin
- tightness in the chest
- troubled breathing
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- weight gain
Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking treprostinil:

- loss of consciousness
- seizure
- unusual tiredness or weakness
Other side effects of Orenitram
Some side effects of treprostinil may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

Oral tablets: The most frequently reported side effects were headache, diarrhea, nausea, and flushing.
Oral inhalation: The most frequently reported side effects were cough, headache, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, throat irritation, pharyngolaryngeal pain, and flushing.
Parenteral: The most frequently reported side effects were subcutaneous infusion site pain and reaction, headache, diarrhea, nausea, jaw pain, vasodilation, edema, and hypotension.[Ref]
