This medicine can cause some serious health issues
Oral route (tablet)
Increased Mortality in Elder Patients With Dementia Related Psychosis. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death.
Pimavanserin is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia who experience psychosis unless their hallucinations and delusions are related to Parkinson’s disease.
Common side effects of Nuplazid
Some side effects of pimavanserin may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.
Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:
More common
- bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
- confusion
- constipation
- nausea
- rapid weight gain
- unusual weight gain or loss
Less common
- change in walking and balance
- clumsiness or unsteadiness
- difficulty having a bowel movement
Incidence not known
- sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
Serious side effects of Nuplazid
Along with its needed effects, pimavanserin (the active ingredient contained in Nuplazid) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking pimavanserin:
Incidence not known
- chest pain, discomfort, or tightness
- fainting
- irregular or slow heart rate
- large, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or genitals
- trouble breathing

- Common (1% to 10%): Constipation, nausea
- Postmarketing reports: Tongue swelling[Ref]

- Common (1% to 10%): Confusional state, hallucinations[Ref]
Hallucinations included visual, auditory, tactile, and somatic hallucinations.[Ref]
Cardiovascular
- Common (1% to 10%): Peripheral edema
- Frequency not reported: QT interval prolongation[Ref]
Nervous system
- Common (1% to 10%): Gait disturbance[Ref]
