Semaglutide (Wegovy) injection for weight loss treatment costs about $1418 per month if you are paying cash without insurance or manufacturer's copay cards. Semaglutide for treatment of type 2 diabetes costs $1051 per month for either the Ozempic pen injection or 30 oral tablets of Rybelsus.

Semaglutide comes as a single dose pen for subcutaneous (under the skin) injection or as an oral tablet. You, or a caregiver, can administer the injections at home after training from your healthcare provider.

The usual recommended adult dose of Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss is either 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg given once weekly. Your doctor will slowly increase your dose over a 3 to 4 month period to help lessen stomach side effects. It is also approved for use in adolescents 12 years and older with obesity.

Semaglutide is also approved by the FDA to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand names Ozempic (a weekly subcutaneous injection) or Rybelsus (an oral tablet taken by mouth once daily).

Ozempic and Rybelsus can also help with weight loss, and in some cases, your healthcare provider may prescribe one of the products “off-label” for weight loss instead of Wegovy. “Off-label” use of a drug is when it is prescribed for a different condition than those approved by the FDA. Be aware that your insurance may not pay for "off-label" use of medications.

Semaglutide injection (Ozempic, Wegovy) is also approved to help protect the heart and prevent events like a heart attack, stroke or heart-related death in adults with established heart disease and either obesity or overweight. Semaglutide is used in addition to diet and increased physical activity for both weight loss and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

In January 2025, Ozempic became the first medicine in the GLP-1 agonist class to reduce the risk of kidney disease worsening (eGFR decline), kidney failure (end-stage kidney disease), and death due to cardiovascular disease in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
