Moderate Potential Hazard, High plausibility. Applicable conditions: Burns - External
Percutaneous and/or transmucosal absorption during repeated use and/or of large concentrations of boric acid on generalized dermatologic conditions, or ingestion of boric acid have resulted in severe and sometimes fatal poisoning. Symptoms as severe as hemorrhagic gastritis, seizures, CNS depression, extensive dermal exfoliation, oliguria, anuria, renal tubular necrosis, shock, circulatory collapse and death have occurred. The lethal dose of boric acid in adults may exceed 30 g, however deaths have occurred with lower doses. Neonatal deaths have occurred at 4.5 g or more. These agents should be used cautiously in patients with dermatologic disorders. Monitoring is recommended.
