Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Dr. prescribed this med for my prostatitis symptoms, on day 5 of a 28-day plan. Noticeable reduction in symptoms so far. Pain seems to be fading as the days pass. Was told to take the whole prescription, as just because the symptoms fade doesn't mean it's gone. Some light side effects are lightheadedness, occasional nausea, and some interrupted sleep, some body tingling also during the day. But if it makes these symptoms go away, it's worth the tradeoff. Better than feeling like your bladder area is on fire. If you can handle the slight side effects for a couple of weeks, I would recommend giving this a try. Although everyone is different and side effects may differ."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Took Bactrim for folliculitis. First 7 days I only had vomiting and nausea, but on Day 8 I started getting fevers, intense shaking, throbbing headache, sweating, vomiting, insomnia, depression. I never felt this sick ever. It took me a while to realize it was the antibiotic. Once I stopped taking it, I broke out in a rash. Ended up having a sulfa allergy. Please be cautious when taking this. There was one point where I just wanted to call 911, I was in so much agony... It did help clear up much of the infection."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I was diagnosed with a kidney infection and prescribed Bactrim twice a day for 5 days. I took my first pill in the evening, slept for twelve hours, and took another one in the morning. I thought my body just needed the rest, but shortly after the second pill, I slept most of the day. By the end of my experience, I've had: fatigue, stomach pains, severe constipation, nausea, insomnia, and loss of appetite. My kidneys seemed to have improved, but I couldn't even bring myself to take the final pill."

For Diverticulitis "I took sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim together with Flagyl for diverticulitis. Had it before, it does the job. Not the nicest experience, but most antibiotics have side effects. Thankfully, I was able to rest, but had trouble sleeping. Almost done the course - grin and bear it, it is working."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I have been prescribed Bactrim for a skin infection in the form of 2 boils, 1 on my arm and 1 on my leg. I have been prescribed Bactrim 800/160 2x per day for 10 days. I started feeling horrible after the first dose. Extreme dizziness, stomach issues, headache by day 3, feeling dehydrated with weakness and joint pain and jaw pain, loss of appetite, insomnia. I am on day 5 and the dizziness is really bad, I had to miss work. I only took half a dose this morning and am considering stopping. Thinking I may be allergic to the sulfonamide as my grandmother is allergic, and this is the first time I have ever taken this. Glad to see others have had a good experience."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I’ve been taking this and am randomly getting anxiety and a jittery feeling. I also keep having weird dreams since I’ve been on it. I had an ear/near my tooth infection. I’m allergic to amoxicillin, so I was prescribed Bactrim. I’m on the 8th day, and I feel insomnia and anxiety. My feet are also really cold. It fluctuates, but I’ll be quitting tomorrow since I don’t feel like myself."

For Bacterial Infection "My experience with this drug is horror. The first night I took the drug, everything was fine. I've been on an anxiety medication prior to taking Bactrim. However, the anxiety that I felt day 2 was like anxiety I've never felt before! I've thrown up in the past, but with Bactrim, I couldn't eat anything! I threw up almost every meal that I ate and woke up all throughout the night! The nausea and insomnia were so bad, these resulted in even more heightened anxiety levels. I stopped taking it after 3 days because I could not handle it! It did help my infection, but in my opinion, it wasn't worth it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed Bactrim by a walk-in clinic. Should've known better. After 2 days, I experienced some awful side effects - chills, fevers, night sweats, insomnia, diarrhea, and migraines - for three days. I thought I was going to die. After I finished my prescription, I got this terrible head-to-toe rash that itches like crazy. My UTI is gone, but it was not worth the rash and three days of near death. Does anyone know what I can do for this rash?"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I found that within a day of taking Bactrim, the infection got better, which was GREAT because I had had it for a while. I experienced a few side effects: dizziness, lack of energy, insomnia if I took the pill a few hours before bed (I found to overcome this, I took the pill just before going to sleep), and headaches, but they seemed to dissipate after 2-3 days."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I have been taking this medicine for a week, and my pimples are significantly smaller, which is a plus because I've had severe acne for 3 years now. The only problem is that it gives me insomnia, sweats, headaches in the mornings, stomach sickness, and nausea. The side effects are brutal, and I'm considering finding another solution. This is the third acne medicine I've tried and has helped the most, but also affected me the most negatively."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I went to my doctor for a boil on my face and another on my lower lip. He prescribed Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS. I started it on a Monday, and by Tuesday morning, positive changes started to occur. The boil on my face stopped oozing, and the one on my lip stopped growing/being so painful. The good thing was my doctor prescribed the correct medication, and secondly, it started working right away. I took 2 tablets as soon as I got the script from the pharmacy to raise the level of this antibiotic in my bloodstream quickly. Then 1 tablet every 12 hrs of Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS for 10 days. Not many positive reviews of this med on this site, but after taking this for 4 days, my sores continue to heal and look better each day that passes. I have zero side effects. No rashes, bumps, insomnia, etc. No idea why others have experienced so many negative effects. I am very pleased with this antibiotic."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Started this med yesterday for the first time. Immediately noticed how strong it is! Prevented vomiting by only taking on a full stomach. Drinking a lot of water will help with the headaches, as dehydration will cause this too. I don't recommend taking too late at night because of insomnia."

For Prostatitis "I was put on this drug 14 days ago for suspected prostatitis. 2 times a day x 15 days. 2 material side effects have been noted, definitely related to this drug. 1) Difficulty getting to sleep and staying asleep. 2) I used to be able to go all night without getting up to pee. At first, I started getting up at 3 or 4 with a second trip to the toilet at 6 or 7. The last couple of nights, I've been getting up every 1.5-2 hours (and during the day as well). Flow is also very weak. Getting a PSA test in 2 days. I hope this drug has done its job."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "I took this for prostatitis last year, and I'm on it for the same thing again this year. Last time I was on it, it helped the infection, but the infection did not completely go away, and I had to go on a different antibiotic. I have had a tough time getting a good night of sleep since I started taking it. I wake up many times a night and lay awake in bed quite often. It's annoying, but I've had worse drug interactions. It's extremely cheap, which is a positive."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "1. Don't drink alcohol with Bactrim. 2. Eat a half hour before you take the pill. 3. Drink plenty of water with it. 4. Take an anti-gas pill if needed. About 30 minutes after the first dose, my scalp was tingly and warm, like a cap was squeezing my head. Used an ice pack, repeated a few hours later; it helped. (Worried about hives.) Stomach mildly upset. Insomnia. First pill with lots of water at 1 p.m.; ate 20 minutes later. Second dose, ate a slice of bread with the pill. Had severe gas (some trapped), burping; hours later took a gas pill. (Really, don't wait like I did!) Next morning, still felt sick. Mildly short of breath overnight and part of the morning; unsure if med-caused or just stress from being over-tired. I take a 24-hour Claritin, also had 12-hour Sudafed in my system when I started Bactrim. Severely stuffed-up nose after Sudafed wore off; new pill took hours to work. Bactrim relieved UTI symptoms within hours. Before prescribing, the doctor cultured to find specific bacteria and its drug susceptibilities."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this medication for a UTI. After 1 pill, I woke up feeling nauseous, nonstop vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, weakness, loss of appetite, fever, chills. I am currently on day 3 and will not be taking this anymore. I have zero improvements, which is to be expected after only 3 days. I was told to take 2 pills daily for 10 days. I can’t take the extreme side effects, and I don’t see why a doctor would prescribe this, with this many horrible side effects. I thought I had a stomach bug or food poisoning until I decided to look up the side effects and realized it’s the medicine. My kind was 800/160MG TB. I don’t recommend."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I have been having skin infections on my breasts off and on for 6 years. Ever since I developed mastitis when I was breastfeeding. I've been given Bactrim DS each time and advised to use Neosporin cream, not ointment. I'm not sure if it works all that great. It does take care of the red, rashy-looking inflammation surrounding the 'boil'/'blister', but does not seem to even really touch the actual blister itself. Without medication, it will take 3 - 4 weeks or so to heal, with meds it takes 2 weeks. I think it has a lot to do with the healing of the red rash part... so I continue to take it. The only side effect I have noticed is an almost unquenchable thirst. But no nausea, insomnia, or headaches for me."

For Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim for a bacterial infection. The first pill I took about 7 p.m., and I couldn't sleep all night, I was wide awake and felt as though a train was running through my muscles. The pain was so severe that I felt as though I was going to die. I couldn't tell if it was helping my infection or not since the pain was so severe. I have not taken another dose, as nothing is worth that much pain. I will never take that antibiotic again."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Eczema on fingers of both hands became infected after several months of me failing to control the eczema on my own. Doc prescribed Bactrim DS twice a day for ten days. Worked very quickly, and my fingers looked 90% healed after two days, but unfortunately, I had to discontinue Bactrim after I had severe anxiety, insomnia, severe tension headaches, hand trembling, neck muscle soreness, and heart palpitations. I made it 4 days before I decided to switch to something else. Had side effects not been as severe, this would have been a 10/10 for me for how quickly it fixed my skin. No diarrhea, nausea, or GI issues for me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for a bladder infection/UTI. Took only 1 pill and felt jittery and lightheaded about 30 minutes after taking. Then began to feel slightly itchy and by the nighttime my skin felt like it was burning, along with a splitting headache, shooting pain in my neck, and insomnia, unable to sleep, complete brain fog and anxiety. Just from one dose, I didn't take any more and 5 days later still having a splitting headache and random pains throughout my body. I would not recommend and ask the doctor for an alternative to Bactrim."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Experienced confusion, overall body weakness, could not sleep, extreme lower body weakness (resulting in repetitive falls), dizziness. These symptoms occurred when my 96-year-old father was prescribed this medication for a UTI, symptoms began after the first day of taking it. By the second day, he fell once, the third day, he fell 2 separate times, and I finally realized the medicine was probably the cause and discontinued using it. Note: Dad is old, but it is worth mentioning that he slept A LOT prior to starting this medicine and was able to get himself to the bathroom without falling. (He slept the large majority of daytime and nighttime). At least by the second day of taking this med, he didn't sleep more than an hour at a time and was awake and confused and restless for the majority of the time. I stopped administering medicine after the third day. It is only the first day of stopping the med, so I don't know yet how long these side effects will last!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I went to CVS MinuteClinic for symptoms of a UTI. I was prescribed Bactrim two times a day for three days. Within an hour of taking the first pill, I had horrible aching back pain around the area of my kidneys. Upon waking up, my whole body felt sore, especially my legs. The same symptoms have persisted throughout the time I’ve taken the medication. I take my last pill in the morning. (This medication also makes you have insomnia, so I'm up at 3 AM). Luckily, I only have to take 3 days' worth of it, or else I would have thrown it out. The medication also cleared up my UTI. So that’s one positive in a pool of negatives."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "I took Bactrim DS 960 mg for suspected acute prostatitis. I was told to take it for 28 days (56 pills). Within two days, and increasing each day, I experienced extreme anxiety, depression, unending panic, insomnia (I didn’t sleep for three days), chills, hot flashes, mild fever, genital pain, out-of-body experience, and other severe negative symptoms. Eventually, I connected the symptoms to Bactrim, stopped the pill, and saw immediate improvement after 24 hours—not full, but much better. Later I was fine. This drug was a terrible experience; I would never take it again for any reason."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Sinusitis "Started meds on Monday. My arms and legs hurt terribly Tuesday and Wednesday. The headache has been the worst I have ever had. Chills, sweating, nausea, impaired vision, insomnia. I called the doctor's office Wednesday afternoon, and the nurse told me to give it a few more days. Went to a different doctor on Saturday, and he said Bactrim is notorious for headaches and other adverse effects. Off of it now and have to wait 24 hours before I can start a new antibiotic. I'm praying this headache ends soon."
