"I returned from India and started having terrible diarrhea within a few days. It continued for two weeks before I went to the doctor. I lost 14 pounds in two weeks. The doctor also gave me cipro. Within 12 hours, my diarrhea stopped, and I started to feel better. To me, this is a miracle drug. I am not sure how much longer I could have gone without being admitted to the hospital."

"I had taken metronidazole 500 mg three times for seven days for the treatment of Giardia trophozoite and Entamoeba histolytica cyst, but it didn't work on the parasite when I tested my feces. I tested again, and the doctor reported that there were no Giardia trophozoite and a few E. histolytica cysts in the report. So please tell me what is the best medicine for this worsening parasite."

"I've been experiencing intermittent diarrhea for like 4 weeks, unsure why. Doc prescribed me this medication (Dazomet) brand. Today's my last day. These are the things I'm experiencing since day 1: 3 times a day, 500 mg for 7 days. 1) dark urine almost brown (the smell of antibiotic makes me vomit) 2) bloated and stomach cramps 3) abdominal pain 4) I also feel like I have the flu 5) behavioral changes (I've been depressed, clingy, etc.) 6) I can't sleep that much due to mentioned cramps, and I feel tired and weak. 7) loss of appetite. I don't want to eat much even if I want to because I feel like vomiting every day. But I feel a lot better now. The side effects are lesser and tolerable as the day goes by. Diarrhea did not come back, and I will go back to the doctor for a follow-up."

"Had recurring giardiasis. Not serious this time because I knew what it was and didn't let it get past the first week of symptoms. I'm taking a very low dose, so my symptoms aren't bad. Just avoid dairy for half the time between doses. I'm also using Stevia instead of sugar. I have an 8-hour race on my last day of taking this, so fatigue isn't an issue."

"Female, 120 lbs. Was prescribed this medication for a parasitic infection (Blastocystis) at 500 mg three times a day for 10 days. I had the pharmacist turn it into 250 mg twice, three times a day as I have trouble swallowing large pills. After the first day of taking these, I woke up at 2 a.m. and vomited a total of 6 times before the Gravol finally kicked in. Been taking Gravol along with my meds ever since. Also been experiencing brain fog (possibly due to Gravol), severe fatigue (Gravol again?), and loss of appetite. You absolutely must eat food before taking these, especially if you are prone to nausea like me. Won't know if the med even works until I do a stool test after the 10 days."

"I'm 4 days into a 7-day treatment for suspected giardia - 400 mg 3 x per day. 46 yrs old. No previous giardia or metronidazole. Giardia symptoms started improving within 48 hrs. Nausea gone. Stomach pain gone. Diarrhea gone. Low fever gone. But these pills really knock me down. About 40 mins to an hour after taking the pill, I get tired, jaded, thick-headed for 2-3 hours. Anxiety too. I'm really looking forward to finishing the course. And I really hope they work!"

"I got giardia from my cat, who was diagnosed with it a few days after bringing him home. I have now completed this metronidazole prescription. I took it 2x daily for 7 days and do not feel much better. It got much worse the first half of the week, and now it is better in terms of nausea and cramping. Still having excessive diarrhea. I guess it’s time to go back to my doctor and see what my options are. Moral of the story: if you get this med, it’s gonna suck real bad for a while, but it at least gets somewhat better."

"Got a stomach bug, and my Dr. prescribed me this Flagyl. 500 mg, 3 times a day for 7 days. My experience so far is a lot of nausea, but no vomiting. Headaches come and go. I have lost weight, urine is a weird color, stomach pain, and had diarrhea. Pretty much all the side effects. Lucky me! Just stopped taking the pills yesterday and hope these symptoms go away."

"I had the worst possible reaction to this medication. I had to stop after three days because I was so ill from it. Horrible stomach pains, feeling like a balloon was in my abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea, oral thrush, an abnormal increase of extremely watery vaginal discharge... the list goes on. I actually felt much less sick before starting the medication. It took my body days to recover from this medicine. Now that I've been off Flagyl for almost a month, all the side effects (including oral and vaginal symptoms) are gone (thank God). I've taken many other antibiotics over the years (including amoxicillin) and have never had one side effect. So this was a first for me. I ended up going to the hospital and was put on a drip because of the diarrhea and vomiting. They told me to stop taking the medication because it's too strong for my body. I will never go near this medication again. I'm sure there are better and safer alternatives out there."

"I am a 19-year-old female. I began taking this drug because I had a parasite that was causing me terrible symptoms. When I started metronidazole, the first 2 days I slept for a total of 36 out of 48 hours. Then, every morning I began feeling so nauseous and vomiting. This happened like clockwork every morning at around 5:45 a.m. It made me not feel like myself anymore. I couldn't finish the last 2 doses because of the severity of the side effects. And even worse, to top it all off, it did not get rid of my parasite. So now I am trying new antibiotics, hoping they won't make me as sick. Metronidazole is the WORST medication I have ever taken, if there is another option for you, take it."

"I'm taking 1x400 mg tablet 5 times per day to treat giardia, and although my diarrhea from the giardia has stopped, I now have terrible lower back pain and have experienced bad pains in my kidneys as well. Am currently paranoid because I think it's more than giardia due to all these extra pains I'm having, but the tablets have a bad reputation for flu-like symptoms, so I'm hoping it's just that."

"40-year-old male in good health, until about 2 months ago when I started experiencing symptoms of a presumptive Giardia infection. Herbals greatly reduced my symptoms, twice when I went off, they came back within 24 hours. To me, this was strong evidence of a parasite even without a stool test. Convinced my doctor of a presumptive giardiasis and got Metronidazole to take 500 mg x 3 doses for 7 days. Experienced extreme fatigue in midday, metallic taste, and possibly some stomach pain due to the drug (hard to say which is which). Saw some improvement within 3 days, no symptoms yesterday, then symptoms again last night into this morning. Hoping and praying it fully clears me up, but need to wait a few more days to see. Overall, the side effects weren’t too bad - follow precautions for foods to avoid!"

"I am so mad, the hospital sent me home, told me they didn't do a stool sample. The follow-up called. They did the test: blood, crypto, and Giardia. This is the second time, same hospital. Looks like I am going back to get the right treatment. I'm sick and tired of being sick! Thanks, Dr."

"I was sick with explosive diarrhea for 10 days, then began taking 500 mg metronidazole, 3 times a day for 7 days, after a stool test confirmed giardia. The side effects of both illness and treatment brought me to urgent care twice for IVs for dehydration and fainting. I have lost 13 lbs, from 132 lbs. I am 5’7 and previously in robust good health for my age. An infectious disease specialist was consulted and recommended I finish the course of medication. Most worrisome (for someone my age or with a pre-existing condition) is elevated liver enzymes from this drug. I thank my doctor for recommending further lab work to monitor the drug’s effect on my liver. I finished my last pill yesterday and thought I was well. The diarrhea had stopped. My energy was returning. Today? The diarrhea is back. Thanks for these reviews. I will follow up with the doctor and not let this go on for so long!"

"I had a hysterectomy and was given a large stress dose of steroids as well as IV antibiotics during my hospital stay. These are both contributors to yeast overgrowth, as I later found out. It manifested everywhere... the folds of my skin, vagina, and mouth that were confirmed. My doctor prescribed 500 mg 2x daily for 10 days. During treatment, I had a bad taste in my mouth, coated tongue, smelly gas, and stinky, whitish soft stools that sunk immediately and didn't float. I've been done with it for about a week, and the side effects did not seem to improve, but have only gotten worse. The taste in my mouth is absolutely intolerable, and I now also have a headache, heartburn, weakness, and constant vaginal discharge."
