For Anxiety "Don't take this drug! It caused me to have horrendously bad dreams. They were terrifying. My anxiety has worsened by 100 percent. I'm fearful of going to sleep. I've not slept more than three hours a night for two weeks. Another side effect I experienced was hair loss and vertigo. Thanks to my 'doctor,' I have regular episodes of vertigo, which I had never experienced in my life. Stay away from this drug!"

For Anxiety "I’ve been prescribed this drug for over a year now. It does little to nothing for my anxiety. Many times, it has actually sent me into panic attacks, which is why I was prescribed it originally. My panic attacks have gone away thanks to a newly prescribed mood stabilizer (lamotrigine), however, if I take the Atarax to try and help me sleep, it almost certainly will cause me to have an attack. It makes my chest feel heavy and makes it feel as if I’m having difficulty breathing. I wouldn’t recommend it, but I know it does work for some people. It helps to quiet my mind but has the opposite effect on me physically. It also causes hot flashes, which trigger my panic attacks as well."

For Anxiety "I was prescribed Atarax for one specific reason. I am having an MRI done and am extremely claustrophobic. I was prescribed 50 mg pills. I was given 4 pills. I am to take 1 pill first to see how it affects me, and then I can decide if I need another one. I took one for the first time last night, and I became very sleepy. I am also on Tylenol 3 for pain. My eyes could barely stay open. However, once I closed my eyes, I was up every hour on the hour. Not sure if that is because of the anticipation of my MRI or what. I was very relaxed, however, and I do not suffer the anxiety attacks as bad as I did years ago, and my heart goes out to those who do. I will take the two pills at the MRI and give my review again then."

For Anxiety "I'm 18, and I've never been on medications before. I have performance and social anxiety. So when I went to my doctor and asked for something to help me survive my everyday life, he recommended Atarax. But I have been taking them for 2 weeks now with no effect whatsoever. Granted, they are only 10 mg and small as a breadcrumb, but I was at least expecting some effect from it. The only thing I felt was nausea and dizziness. I must say I'm quite disappointed."

For Anxiety "I have anxiety and did not realize until I took only a 1/4 of my 25 ml tab how much it was affecting me. Today I have felt more able and productive, and had a day without anxiety. Feels amazing. I did have at least 2 memorable dreams that night. I have noticed a slight dry mouth and eyes. This being said, I do have CKD and will be going back to docs to make sure kidneys are not being affected, and also to ask for the liquid version of this as the other ingredients list more to my preference.... no color additives from what I've read."

For Anxiety "I thought this would help my anxiety and calm me down with zero side effects whenever I want. Boy, was I wrong. There have been only negative side effects after taking a combined amount of 50 mg in the last 2 days. First of all, it makes me dead tired, so tired that I can't get up from the bed. That lasts for about 4-5 hours after taking only 12.5 mg. Other terrible side effects were lower libido, becoming almost sexually numb, depersonalization got worse, I actually had almost a panic attack, I got hypnic jerks, and sometimes felt like I couldn't breathe when I tried to sleep. Still feeling the effects of it after almost 24 hours of not taking any. Never going to take this poison anymore."

For Allergic Urticaria "I have been taking Atarax for the last 3 years, but it really makes me feel I have a lower level of consciousness. I feel extremely sleepy, I feel as if I am high, not entirely in my senses. I do my work, but I don't feel anything. I can sleep throughout the day after taking this medicine, although I don't sleep much. Today, I also took this medicine after lunch as I developed hives due to cold urticaria (AC in the office), and I feel as if I am stoned. People in my office are thinking that I am sleeping for the last two hours since they are not aware of my situation."

For Anxiety "This medication, in all honesty, is not very helpful for anxiety. It may help in terms that you get drowsy. In my medical opinion, drowsiness and/or falling asleep is not the same as anxiety relief. The only time I prescribe this is when a patient requests it or tells me that it works for them. Also, a tolerance to this develops quickly. While you will not get physically dependent on it like benzodiazepines, it will generally become less effective after a few days. We don't really have any really good and safe solutions for anxiety."

For Anxiety "I was given Atarax for acute stress reaction and anxiety. The Dr. put me on 1-2 tablets at night at 25 mg each, it zonks me and gives me a horrible headache, and if taken with my pain medicines, I can't even lift my head. It's an alright medication, but after doing research and finding it's only a short-term medicine, I think I need to find something else that works just as good and is safer for longer-term use."

For Anxiety "I suffer from severe panic attacks and PTSD, I was on benzos for years and was switched to Atarax 50 mg three times a day. This medication takes around 45 minutes to an hour to settle in. It does NOT work for me. I feel little to no difference. Just very light drowsiness. But it is not helpful for severe panic attacks."

For Anxiety "It's my first time using any sort of drug for anxiety. The doctor gave me a 10mg sized Atarax, and it only made me feel sleepy. I still felt nervous and anxious over my work, and these feelings didn't go away. Maybe I should be taking 25mg like the others here. Either way, these 10mg capsules are supposed to last me until I go for my appointment with a professional psychiatrist."

For Allergies "I had an adverse confirmed reported COVID drug reaction with my whole body covered in an itchy rash, after months of being under treatment by a dermatologist. I changed dermatologists, who took one look at me and said he now has to deal with the toxicity and put me on a strong long dose of cortisone and Atarax. It’s amazing the itch stopped, I had the most amazing sleep, much needed after all these months. I slept like a baby. I was so sleep-deprived, and in a few days I felt rejuvenated. Highly recommended."

For Sedation "It works to make me feel relaxed, but not enough to fall asleep. However, after falling asleep, I am usually out for the rest of the night and only have mild drowsiness for about 30-45 minutes in the morning before I am back to normal. I am a 21-year-old female, 150 lbs, taking 25 mg nightly."

For Anxiety "'Atarax' was prescribed to me in a 'controlled environment.' I was prescribed Klonopin originally, but the 0.5 mg dosage wasn't enough for my anxiety, and with the medication (Suboxone) I was currently taking, there is a risk of taking benzodiazepines while on Suboxone (like, death). Anyway, Atarax was prescribed. I can't remember the dose now, I know it was more than 10 mg, but it was 4-6 times daily as needed. It seemed to be working alright at first, but I think it was the controlled environment. When I left, it stopped working for my anxiety and panic attacks and has not had any useful effect since. *Didn't experience any side effects."

For Sedation "I experience insomnia only when I am away from my own country, and my work involves traveling and working in other countries (it starts after a week or two of my new workplace), and a doctor prescribed Atarax for me. I take only half of a pill (i.e., 12.5 mg), and it helps me a lot. I reduced it to half a pill because the full tab makes me dizzy the next day. I am 40."

For Anxiety "I was prescribed 15 ml/10 mg for anxiety, and it is literally like giving yourself anesthesia. It is scary that doctors prescribe this for anxiety. I take 5 ml when I can’t sleep, and within 20 minutes, I can’t keep my eyes open. Sometimes I try to fight going to bed because it’s such a hard-hitting sleep, you don’t feel relaxed. I’ve only taken it a handful of times when I’ve had insomnia for a couple of days."

For Anxiety "So I started taking Atarax after I went to the hospital with a horrible UTI that was making me incredibly anxious and nauseous. It worked great the first time they gave it to me, possibly because the symptoms were just then getting treated. Every time after has been terrible. I feel insanely weak, like bedridden almost. I’m always super dizzy/lightheaded, and I feel like I’m not real if that makes sense. The dreams are too real, I’ve been waking up in my dreams, so my brain tricks me to think I’m awake (I’ve never had this happen). I tried one more time today, and it was all the same, plus some good ol' depression. I don’t recommend this unless it’s absolutely necessary :("

For Sedation "Hydroxyzine 10 mg for insomnia! I've taken this off and on since 2014, and it's been relatively effective and mild on side effects up until May 2020, when Atarax was discontinued, leaving us all with cheap generic hydrox HCL. I refilled my prescription in June 2020 and instantly felt the difference. Then I found out a few months later that the brand name was discontinued. I tried Vistaril, and it's just not the same despite what the doctors or the FDA says. I'm still trying to find a safe alternative with minimal side effects. Currently on Ativan, unfortunately! I give the old Atarax 9/10 and the new generic junk 4/10 because it has minimal side effects."

"I have the problem of waking up too early and can't fall back asleep. Since taking generic Atarax (Hydroxyzine HCL), I still wake up too early, but I'm now able to fall back asleep. On a good day, I'm getting close to 8 hours of sleep, whereas before I'd get only 4 to 5 hours. It has helped my anxiety to a great degree. Initially, my doc prescribed 25 mg, but it was so strong, even with half a pill, I was unable to function the next day. All I wanted to do was stay in bed and sleep more. So my doc gave me 10 mg, which now I take 1/4 of a pill or 2.5 mg at bedtime. This dose is my sweet spot. I'm able to get enough sleep and function the next day. And if the next day, even if I don't take Atarax, I can still get a good night of sleep. 2.5 mg from a 10 mg tablet is very different from 2.5 mg from a 25 mg tablet. I tried chipping off 2.5 mg from my old 25 mg tablets thinking it'll give the same effect, but no, it was way too sedating."
