"Hydroxyzine is an oldie, but a keeper. It is more powerful than its younger brother, Zyrtec, and lasts 24-36 hours. If taken at night, there is little chance of a 'hangover effect' or residual drowsiness. It is probably the safest and most effective sleep medication available, and you don't build a tolerance or addiction. As an HCL salt, check your liver and kidneys annually to make sure there are no ill effects, which are rare."

"Atarax did its job and gave me some sleep after taking just one very small pill, but the after effects were truly horrendous. I have used this drug twice and had the same after effects both times. Once you wake up, you are left with so much dizziness that you can't get your head off the pillow, so don't expect to be doing anything at all for many hours after you wake up. Maybe other people can use this drug and have no side effects, but I will never ever use this drug again."

"Made me so tired, could not focus or stand up. It pretty much sedated me, slept like a baby. Doctor said it would make me sleepy because of a bad allergic reaction to Testim, so it sedated me to keep me from scratching my rash."

"It works to make me feel relaxed, but not enough to fall asleep. However, after falling asleep, I am usually out for the rest of the night and only have mild drowsiness for about 30-45 minutes in the morning before I am back to normal. I am a 21-year-old female, 150 lbs, taking 25 mg nightly."

"I experience insomnia only when I am away from my own country, and my work involves traveling and working in other countries (it starts after a week or two of my new workplace), and a doctor prescribed Atarax for me. I take only half of a pill (i.e., 12.5 mg), and it helps me a lot. I reduced it to half a pill because the full tab makes me dizzy the next day. I am 40."

"Hydroxyzine 10mg for insomnia! I've taken this off and on since 2014 and it's been relatively effective and mild on sides effects up until "May2020" when Atarax was discontinued leaving us all with cheap generic hydrox hcl. I refilled my prescription in June 2020 and instantly felt the difference. Then I found out a few months later that the brand name was discontinued. I tried Vistaril and its just not the same despite what the Dr's or the FDA says. I'm still trying to find a safe alternative with minimal sides. Currently on Arivan unfortunately! I give the old Atarax 9/10 and the new generic junk 4/10 because it has minimal sides."

"Took for chronic insomnia. It relaxed me a bit but not enough to sleep. Intensely foggy and hung over all the next day on a low dose. Immediately discontinued."

"This drug works wonders for me. I was prescribed 25 mg for anxiety and to help me sleep. I take it occasionally when I feel anxious or worried at nighttime or just have problems falling asleep. I feel so calm, relaxed, and sleepy. :) The only bad thing is the hangover I get the next day. I feel like a zombie. But if I don't take it too late at night, there's usually not a problem. I will need a good 10-12 hours of sleep on it, though. 24-year-old female."
