"I developed IBS about a year ago as I reflect on my history. I had no idea that was my problem, so I tried easing the problem with various OTC medications, but nothing worked. I finally had to go to the ER, it was so bad. The ER doctor diagnosed me with IBS and prescribed Bentyl. My first dose was administered in the ER, and within 30 minutes, I was pain-free. My prescription dosage is 2 tabs every 6 hours as needed. I sympathize with those of you who are not able to use Bentyl for whatever reason. But don’t give up on trying to find a workable fix! Everyone’s body is different and reacts differently. I am thankful that this worked for me!"

"Unfortunately, I have not had a good experience with Bentyl. I've had severely blurred vision after just 3 days of taking 10mg 3 times per day along with extreme bloating. I have been extremely uncomfortable and stopped taking the medicine. Hopefully, there is something else available to help my symptoms."

"I was admitted to the hospital every 3-4 months. The pain was unbearable, vomiting, diarrhea. It would last 4-10 days. I had several specialists, none could help. I finally found a great doctor, she had it figured out in 20 minutes after REALLY reading my history. Bentyl is a big part of saving me. I only take 10-20 mg when I feel the attack start. Yes, I go to sleep, but not to the hospital! Almost 2 years without a stay because of this medicine! I only take it when I feel the attack coming, but it's been a life saver!"

"First, I want to thank you all for your reviews. These reviews helped me to finally be brave enough to take Bentyl for IBS. I was sick for months: constipation, bloating, sudden diarrhea with syncope sometimes, lost 35 lbs. without trying, and highly sensitive to various foods. I logged everything I ate, drank, and every BM for 5 months. I was tested for everything under the sun... multiple blood labs good, multiple stool labs good, good upper & lower GIs, CT scan. I had nothing physically wrong with me to be found. My primary care recommended I try Bentyl. I avoided it due to some of the horror stories I initially read online about possible side effects. Months later, I finally tried it after reading some of your reviews on this website. For the first 2-3 days, I had some minor dizziness and felt tired. But after sticking with it for a few days, those side effects went away completely, and I feel absolutely normal. I only wish I'd had tried Bentyl sooner."

"After the donation of a kidney, I have been plagued with a wide variety of non-specified gastrointestinal issues. The most pressing was a severe problem with vomiting and retching, once I started, I couldn't stop. My abdominal pain was off the charts, and the only thing that would work at that point was a pain shot to quiet things down. Once I started taking the Bentyl, it's really changed my life for the better."

"Crohn's disease 10 years - just started it as needed recently. Has saved me several from having to go to the ER. Slows my bowels so I don't have loose stools while traveling. Works quickly. Little to no side effects - 10 mg."

"Doctor prescribed this because I have had loose stools and cramping for over a month now. This is my second day, and this morning I had regular stool for the first time. However, I have been short of breath, waking up several times at night short of breath and what feels like a panic attack. I think today will be my last day taking it. If you are having anxiety, this drug will exacerbate your symptoms."

"It was great for the first day or so, but then I was struck by horrible side effects. Cramps in my legs were so bad I could hardly walk, and I literally didn't get a wink of sleep at night due to the pain and restless legs. I also experienced blurred vision and very bad nausea. I would advise a low dose at first to see how it goes, but beware of side effects."

"I was prescribed Bentyl for vomiting and having diarrhea. I had been having severe cramping and was having sporadic severe cramping during this bout of illness. I have learned more about this medication reading the comments here that I learned reading the 'literature' on it (thank you all). Based on what I have learned, this medication may be something I will want to continue in an as needed basis. It helps urgency as well as constipation (I have MS, so these are very important), gas, and even my menstrual cramping! Not a cure, but a great help!"

"I've been on Bentyl for 3 1/2 years, and my IBS is so much better when I take my pill. Initially, I had severe dry mouth that lasted for about 3 months, but I no longer have that side effect. I take a pill one hour before I eat, and I can pretty much eat without worrying about a flare-up. If I eat a meal or snack with little or no fiber, my stomach gurgles and I get gas, but no diarrhea."

"I took 20 mg on the first day and 10 mg the next day, and it was too much. I felt like I was on a drug that was cranking up my nervous system. Bentyl caused me serious side effects: anxiety, pain in the lower abdomen, congestion in my nose like I had allergies, and cognitive impairment in the form of forgetfulness. Never again. This drug is not for me."

"I have had stomach issues since I was a kid. I was recently prescribed Bentyl up to 4 times a day. It works great, calms my stomach and digestive system down like nothing else I have tried over the counter in the stores has. It can make me a little fuzzy-headed or tired on occasion, but it doesn't happen every time. I will take that small side effect over my stomach problems any day. I highly recommend it."

"I think this is actually helping my IBS-D, but it’s too soon to tell. What I’ve noticed is it dissolves quickly and tastes terrible. Tried putting on the back of my tongue and it burned my throat. This should be in a capsule."

"I am going to try this medication. I have had IBS for years now. I just wanted to let you know that one thing that sets it off every time is anything carbonated, pop, water, and so on. Just wanted to let you know."

"I am a male, 66 years old. Suffering from IBS/SIBO for 20 plus years. Check out SIBO on Google. Side effects for this medicine give me extreme headaches. I have started using my old standby, Peppermint Plus, with no LSD effects. I also take peppermint tea with ginger powder."

"Bentyl has made a world of a difference to me. I no longer have quick spasms where I have to run to the bathroom. I can finally live my life without worrying if I will be able to make it to the bathroom or not. Of course, not all of my symptoms are completely gone, but I don't think that is possible with IBS."

"I was diagnosed with microcolitis after a colonoscopy. Up until the colonoscopy, I had taken loperamide for the daily early morning diarrhea, which worked okay. After the colonoscopy, I developed severe abdominal pain - left lower quadrant (LLQ) pain, especially during aerobic exercise. The GI doc prescribed dicyclomine (generic of Bentyl) 20 mg 3x day - worked wonders for pain! But when I tried going without loperamide, the diarrhea came back. So now I take both and things are relatively under control, although not 'normal.'"

"I went to the ER one night, was severely constipated, an x-ray showed. Was given Bentyl recommended by doctor, worst day of my life. I have not been the same since. It's been 2 weeks now and it has destroyed my life, my state of mind is off, I cannot shake this mental fogginess. Reading other people's experiences has given me hope that I will be normal again soon. Wish I could go back to that night and never had taken it!"

"I take 20 mgs of this medication 4 times a day for IBS and gastroparesis because it helps with pyloric spasms that I get with it. My GI doctor also says that I can take it up to 6 times a day on days when the cramping is really bad from the spasms. It works well. I get cramping some, but not nearly like I used to. I haven't had any side effects with it. It's a huge benefit that it helps with both diseases. It also doesn't slow my stomach with the gastroparesis (paralyzed stomach) down as much as most similar medications do, so it was the best choice for me."

"This worked like magic on my horrible, knife-like abdominal cramps and bloating. Within 30 minutes, my tummy felt great! But... Bentyl leaves me unable to work and barely functional. When I would take it, it would make me so confused I couldn't remember where I was, why I was there, or what I had just been doing. I would stop talking to someone mid-sentence and not remember what we were talking about or how I got there. I often couldn't answer simple questions. I also became very dizzy. I would only take it again if the IBS symptoms occurred at home and at bedtime. Such a shame. Nothing took away my pain like Bentyl did."

"I went back to this due to side effects with another medication. Bentyl is cheap and works, but the side effects make me dizzy and tired. I'll keep taking it because it's the only thing that works. Must take 2-4 times a day to not have cramping, but definitely works for cramping like nothing else."

"After being diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, I was started on Bentyl 20 mg up to 4 times a day. At first, I was not happy with the tiredness, so I only took it twice daily, but now I take it 3-4 times a day as needed. Although it doesn't eliminate all of the cramping and gas pains, it does make a huge difference."

"IBS in South America. The little pink pill. Sertal Compuesto (Propinox clorhidrato, Clonixinato de lisina). I'm 65 and a veteran. I've had this condition for at least 20 years. When I visited Ecuador a few years ago, I had an attack that put me on the floor (again). It wasn't food or the water! I'm a big boy, and I know the difference. I had to return to the apartment and cry and roll around like a baby. The woman I was with went to the pharmacy and got a syringe and some Sertal Compuesto. 10 minutes after the injection, the IBS was gone. No pain. I stopped crying due to the pain and began crying because I was so happy. It also comes in a pink pill that takes about 30 minutes to work. I had attacks every 6 months. I changed the diet, lost weight, etc. Nothing worked. Sertal Compuesto works. The FDA won't allow it into the USA for sales. Must be purchased elsewhere. I now live in Ecuador. I keep both pills and the injection on hand."

"This medication works wonders for me. Tend to get stomach cramps regularly, I miss work sometimes because I am constantly running to the bathroom. If I am traveling, I have to stop and use public restrooms. I never know when it's going to hit me. I am weak and faint sometimes from these flares. The only drawback is that it makes me feel tired and I get blurry vision. It has really helped me."

"I had stomach problems from the age of 14 and up. And naturally, with how young I am and being so prone to ovarian cysts, my bloating up (looking 4 months pregnant at 110 pounds) and consistent stomach pains, they would always just assume it was a new cyst and give me pain medicine, even after being on TWO birth controls at once. When my doctor finally started to realize how frequently I was in so much pain that I'd just cry nonstop and the bloating would happen so often, he prescribed me Bentyl. I have to redo an endoscopy next month due to the last one not really working, but I can already tell a difference. I just don't like how goofy I can be and how overly excited I get. Other than that, I haven't had this kind of relief in years!"
