I pretty much tried other stuff. But I have a very high tolerance to medication. Also some meds will affect me totally opposite than what they intend. As in being more hyper than I am already. I have problems with sleeping, and I get in a very miserable mood gets worse with less sleep. I believe that I need 8 hours of sleep. I feel so much better when I get good sleep.
Is there anything other than Seroquel that would help me to sleep?

For PTSD. My family doctor proscribed Seroquel, and after two days, slept for two days, and tossed the stuff down the toilet. But I know each of us are diffrent . My answer to sleeping better was to be as active as possible during the day, and than start at about four hours before bed time to start slowing down, every thing, including fluids an hour before bed, and Also realized , reading in bed was a no no. And my last resort is benadryl, when all else fails, I sit up quietly in a chair reading, untill I am tired. doing the same every day, helps. Late wekends will ruin the body clock.
Amsel10,
Check with your physician about taking Doxepin. From my understanding, it's a very "old" drug - been around for years. My doctor started me on Doxepin over 4 years ago, and I think it does a pretty good job. On really bad nights, I wind up supplementing it with Ambien CR, but most nights I just take the Doxepin 100mg.
Hope this helps and "sweet dreams"
Blessings~

Amsel10 I failed to ask you earlier what Have you tried? are there any medications you have tried that did not work and what problem are you taking them for? That really is the foundation in your search. There are so many I cannot take that it is a problem for me or I tried them and they did not work. Im afraid that when I answered your ? I was looking for answers myself. Good luck. It will easier to get your answers with that in mind... I think
I want to give you honest safe answers I know there are drugs like Ambien, Sonata, I have problems with pain medications that have horrible effects on moods so I totally understand, I am aware of it and I am sure you know your body well enough to know when you can't take the medication talk with the doctor and be open with whoever the person is please take good care
I was in the health food store yesterday and fell upon Valerian root. Now I am not to much into hippy remedies but I fell upon this post and thought id throw it out there...
Valerian is used for insomnia and other disorders as an alternative to benzodiazepine drugs. It is all natural and I have heard has worked well for sleep. I have not tried it personally as my regular prescribed meds make me sleepy enough at bedtime so i dont feel i need extra sleep help but i have heard it does work. Look in your local health food store. It comes in tea bag form in along with other relaxing herbs like catnip, pepermint and so on. It also comes in capsule form.
Hello - with all natural supplements you must tell yoour doctor before taking them - they can really mess up the balance of your meds - seriously
Have you ever tried Remeron? it may help or it may not. You at least have to try. It also depends apon your symptoms of sleep and how you feel when you try to and when you are sleeping. I had taken Remeron for awhile and it really has me boggled. I can fall fast asleep without it now and even had several time stayed asleep throughout the night with only short periods of wakefulness just to hit the john. well good night and hope that you can sleep tonight. but sleep on the idea of taking any kinds of sleep medications. whether it be perscribed or over the counter. Either way sometimes a good bath may do a good thing in sleeping and maybe soothing music as well. Hope that these suggestions are sleep worthy for thinking about. Let me know what comes of this. I really would like to know. They say a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Well sleeplessness isn't good for the body. overall you need at least 8 hours of it to function properly.
if any some sleep is good Take a noon time nap or whenever you find the time to just lay down and relax with something that is soothing to you and not to harsh of a deal. Hope a better nights sleep is on your mind and in your future starting tonight.
Just thought I would let you guys know of a new prescription alternative to Ambien and Lunesta which has worked well for me and no funny side effects or morning hang over. It is called Silenor available through your doctor at 3 mg and 6 mg tabs. I didn't think it would work as I have tried everything already. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Anyhow good luck in getting some sleep!
Perhaps add Klonopin and Ambien to your regiment. Klonopin will calm you down and allow you to think more clearly. Ambien has helped me sleep for a few years. If I miss any of these meds, I could have a manic episode. By not having enough sleep, I get too tired which could be the road to mania. I also take 400 mg of Lamictal a day. Lamictal keeps me stable. I can feel a difference if I miss a dose of Lamcictal.
Have you tried Trazadone?
I take 100mg of Trazodone for 3.5 years now. I sleep very well. You can up it if you weight more. Also it is a drug that is not addicting so if you are on it awhile and get off you should be fine.
LONG, BUT ADDRESSES ALL OF YOUR REQUIREMENTS... AND I've been the Guinea Pig! I'm just gonna say this once to CYA myself - Don't mix Herbs with Prescription Meds. Unless you've got a Doc who deals with both and gives the OK. The Herbs and Prescription Med(s) should not be in the same "family".
If you are NOT on any RX's, OR if you are BUT your Doc says it's OK than I'd go for the Herbs. They've been used forever - it's where we get our drugs from - only they substitute the real thing into synthetic, which is why you have the same problem as me - YOU BODY DOES THE OPPOSITE! My body doesn't like "synthetic" and I get way too many side effects from "semi-synethics" too... Choices are:
Herbs - For Insomnia, #1 choice Valerian . It's for insomnia and sedation, and aids sleeping. The other Herb is Kava Kava - more like Xanax - it relaxes you, helps with anxiety, yet keeps you mind clearer and isn't as sedating as Valerian. Find the Pharmaceutical Grade Herbs - on-line or through your doc, or a holistic doc, acupuncturist or even chiropractors and kinesiologists. The Liquids work best. You just add X drops to water and drink. Fast acting. You can adjust the amount for more or less and I didn't experience ANY side effects. If you use the caps, it's harder to adjust to the "best dosage for you". Just make sure that the main ingredient is the SAME AS THE HERB - and is organic OR wildcrafted and in water/alcohol or water/preservative.
Next are Herbal Teas. They do the same thing (actually ARE the same thing - roots of the plants, since we're talking 0 caffeine and calm and sedating group) and you can get them at any Health Food Store OR even most grocery stores in the Organic Isle. Best site - www.teabenefits.com. You can put in what you have "insomnia", "anxiety", etc. and they'll give you a list of teas and you'll probably end up like I did - with about 20 different ones! They taste great, you can add agave, stevia (if you want to loose weight or don't want sugar). They'll tell you which teas are best for whatever "ails you". Same as Herbs though, they can intensify the effect of your RX's if IN or CLOSE to same family (i.e., sedatives, tranquilizers - actually different families, but even Docs/Nurses lump them together.)
OTC sleeping aids - like "XXX PM's main ingredient is the SAME as what's in Benadryl (an anti-histamine) because it makes you tired. Just read the labels.
I've taken Seroquel, at a non-therapeutic dosage because I ended up mixing RX's and Herbs in the same family. I took it for a short time. It made me feel "flat". But it did help because my Docs were so naive about mixing Herbs and Drugs they thought it was okay. Seroquel is for manic depressives and other mood disorders, but is used "off label" for other disorders - but I have NEVER heard of it being used for insomnia.
I also have the SAME PROBLEM as you. MY BODY DOES THE OPPOSITE. If you stick with the more natural product(s), this should stop. It's only with RX's that my body ever did this with.
Good Luck!
ask your doctor about a med called clonodine or lunesta
I too have tried the seroquel and it didn't work, I have however am now taking dalmane 30mg and it is working wonders. My problem is that I could get to sleep but couldn't stay asleep.
Same problem here for the last 12 or so years. Have tried every sleeping pill, and combo there is I think, lol. Best I can get is 6 hrs. I have just learned to accept it. Doc keeps trying but i am one of those that med's work opposite on. I had to take percocet after surgery, 10mgs, and went to work on my feet for an 8 hr. Shift taking it every 4 hrs, lol. Good luck!
You don't say if you are having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. In my case, it was both. I have not mastered the falling asleep. However, clonidine has helped immensely in allowing me to stay asleep. I don't wake up at all, no night terrors (the largest reason why I never got much sleep), and can easily get 6-8 hours once I'm asleep if not awakened.
If you are having trouble getting to sleep, it doesn't work for me personally, but there is a medication called Risperdal, which I'm guessing you're familiar with if you're on Seroquel. Also, Saphris, which is nasty since you have to melt it under your tongue and it is vile, can help with falling asleep.
I'm on ambien and trazadone and it used to work but now I can't sleep at all, and I am tried rozerem and that did'nt work I bought vitimins with promote sleep on it and that did'nt help. I am desp for a good night sleep I only sleep 3-4 hrs a night. How long can someone go like that? I even contacted a sleep clinic to see if I could join a sleep study and find the problem.
