Along with its needed effects, gentamicin topical (the active ingredient contained in Garamycin Topical) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking gentamicin topical:

Less common
  • Itching, redness, swelling, or other sign of irritation not present before use of this medicine

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have rarely included photosensitization.[Ref]

Photosensitization reactions could not be elicited with topical application of gentamicin followed by exposure to ultraviolet radiation in patients who reported prior possible photosensitivity reactions with gentamicin topical.[Ref]

Local

Local irritation reported by patients with dermatoses treated with gentamicin topical (the active ingredient contained in Garamycin Topical) generally did not require discontinuation of treatment. The same patient population failed to show signs of irritation or sensitization following patch testing with gentamicin topical on patches of normal skin.[Ref]

Local side effects associated with the treatment of dermatoses have rarely included irritation (erythema and pruritus).[Ref]
