Along with its needed effects, erythromycin topical (the active ingredient contained in Emcin Clear) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Side effects not requiring immediate medical attention
Some side effects of erythromycin topical may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

For erythromycin ointment
For erythromycin pledget (swab), topical gel, or topical liquid form
- Dry or scaly skin
- stinging or burning feeling
For Healthcare Professionals
Applies to erythromycin topical: topical gel, topical ointment, topical solution, topical swab
Very common (10% or more): Burning/burning sensation (up to 25%)
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Desquamation, dryness, erythema, itching, oiliness, peeling[Ref]
Frequency not reported: Mild to severe skin irritation, skin tenderness[Ref]
Frequency not reported: Generalized urticarial reaction[Ref]
Generalized urticarial reactions required systemic steroid treatment.[Ref]
