For Urinary Tract Infection "Experienced confusion, overall body weakness, could not sleep, extreme lower body weakness (resulting in repetitive falls), dizziness. These symptoms occurred when my 96-year-old father was prescribed this medication for a UTI, symptoms began after the first day of taking it. By the second day, he fell once, the third day, he fell 2 separate times, and I finally realized the medicine was probably the cause and discontinued using it. Note: Dad is old, but it is worth mentioning that he slept A LOT prior to starting this medicine and was able to get himself to the bathroom without falling. (He slept the large majority of daytime and nighttime). At least by the second day of taking this med, he didn't sleep more than an hour at a time and was awake and confused and restless for the majority of the time. I stopped administering medicine after the third day. It is only the first day of stopping the med, so I don't know yet how long these side effects will last!"

For Acne "I took this medication SMZ/TMP for acne/scars on my face. I had a very severe allergic reaction. My face was swollen and my lips. My hands swelled up. I had terrible pains in my wrists up to my arms and pain in my stomach/abdomen. This happened after taking it for around a week. My dad had to drive me to the emergency room because I couldn't swallow and was almost choking. I was so scared. I warn anyone going on this medication to think twice. I had no idea I would have an anaphylaxis reaction to it. Very serious. It was hell going through this, and I really thought I would die. I didn't know what was happening to me as I was choking in my sleep. My mom looked up the side effects, and that's when we found out it was a terrible reaction."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this for UTI. I’ve had severe stomach pain, back pain, and had to stop eating. Day 4 of a 7-day prescription. It does not work for the UTI, and instead, I’m wondering if I have an ulcer from this medication!"

For Bacterial Infection "Taking for abscessed tooth. It seems to be working so far. Although it is very slow, it seems. Thankfully, I have experienced no side effects like a lot of these other people, so hopefully it gets the job done in the end. So far, so good."

For Urinary Tract Infection "First time ever taking this medicine. I have had stomach pains and nausea. I did everything the Dr told me to, and I still have the horrible side effects! I thought it was from the UTI. After reading all the other comments, I see it’s from the medication. The Dr only gave me a 3-day supply. I have had a headache from day one of the pills, and I have been constipated, too. Calling the Dr tomorrow to see what we can do to get rid of the side effects. Will not take this ever again!"

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I had a cyst removed, and Dr. prescribed for any bacterial infection that may occur after lancing boil/cyst. I have developed fluid in my lungs and a real bad severe dry cough. I am scared that this may have damaged me. I have no medical insurance right now and have been wheezing. Allergic to sulfur and prednisone, very sensitive to strong medicines."

For Urinary Tract Infection "No issues while taken this, even on an empty stomach. Symptoms began to clear up in a few days and were gone by the end of my 7 days. More tired than normal, but I also take Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and was warned that antibiotics can reduce the absorption of my thyroid meds. Be sure to take a probiotic while taking this medicine, for up to 2 weeks after to help replenish your good gut bacteria! Drink lots of water! Alcohol warning - my prescription insert did not indicate that alcohol may not be consumed while taking this antibiotic. However, my research indicates that you may suffer serious side effects from drinking alcohol while taking this medicine (aka Bactrim) and should wait up to 72 hours after finishing before consuming alcohol. So if you thought you could imbibe for a special occasion, just don't. It even warns against cooking with alcohol and using mouthwash with alcohol."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "Well. I developed an acne pimple I thought it was and busted it while I was at work on a Friday night. Sunday, my face was swollen. Went to the ER, and they told me it was herpes simplex 1 and it had gotten into my skin and tissue and then become bacterially infected. I have taken Bactrim before and was fine. Now this time around it makes me have chills and extreme anxiety attacks because I made a mistake and took 2 in the same day. I thought I was going to die! I will most definitely watch my medicine and make sure it doesn't get mixed up again. The swelling in my face is going down a little at a time. I just pray this antibiotic works."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I have cellulitis. I took the first dose of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and my chest tightened up in about 4 hours, accompanied by shortness of breath if I move the slightest bit. This is how I found this blog through a Google search. Yup, one dose is all I'm taking."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This medication (Bactrim) works as prescribed for me and with no side effects. Actually cleared up 3 out of 4 UTIs. One UTI was so severe no oral antibiotic would work. I ended up with daily antibiotic infusions over a 10-day span via a PICC line. Chances are Bactrim will work for you as side effects are typically rare - so my doctors tell me. Good luck!"

For Prostatitis "I can feel that this medication is pretty powerful... Only side effects I'm experiencing are brain fog or not able to think clearly, kind of a delayed reaction time. I'm an endocarditis survivor and can't have any infections without risking reoccurrence. 9 more days to go."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Urologist prescribed it to me when I explained I had recurring UTIs after sex, and she was concerned I would get antibacterial resistance due to the strong antibiotics I was being prescribed for months. The directions say to take 1 after sex, and a few days after taking the medication, I get stomach cramps and lower abdominal pain that go away afterwards. I am not able to sleep as comfortably a few days after taking when I also get the cramps, but overall, the medication has been working well to prevent my UTIs."

For Acne "Started traveling and went off of normal acne medication. I had a huge flare-up of the most painful acne I’ve ever had. It was almost cystic for about 6 months. Within just the 1st week of taking this, people were noticing my skin clearing. This medicine was a miracle for my skin. It may be because my body has gotten used to it now (after a year), but unfortunately it doesn’t do much for me anymore. It keeps my face from exploding, but I still have pimples. Overall, this worked well and QUICKLY for me, which is especially rare with acne medication. Typically, acne meds make your skin worse for months before you see improvement, if at all."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This worked quickly for my UTI caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. I was prescribed this for 1 pill every 12 hours for 3 days. I took this along with a variety of probiotics, and I didn’t have too many issues. My only problem was that it didn’t tell me anywhere that I should probably avoid alcohol, so after day one I had two beers and woke up in the middle of the night with nausea and vomiting. After that episode, I was totally fine, just rested throughout the day. This was surprisingly mild for me, and it worked really well. I am hoping it will help stop my reoccurring UTIs."

For Prostatitis "24 yo male, no side effect symptoms on this, while I had moderate symptoms with doxy. While it did not completely clear up the main issue (yet, still have about 5 days left on it out of a 45-day supply), it did help."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed this for a UTI. Took it at 6 pm, and by 11 pm, I was so nauseous I had to take a chewable pill for it. Finally got to sleep only to awaken after 4 am with tingling in most of my upper body, throat is dry. Noticed that the urge to go isn't there, and I'm going just to go because I'm drinking plenty of water to help flush out the bacteria. I'm calling for a different medication later. Forgot to mention that I'm feeling very jittery as if I had a pot of coffee."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I haven’t seen this yet in the reviews, but this medicine messes with my vagina. I have recurring UTIs, and I have taken Macrobid a lot, and it makes it better for a week or two, then they come back. So this time the doctor gave me SMZ-TMP and also Diflucan for a yeast infection, and I took both. On the first day, all of the muscles in my upper body were sore, and my throat felt extremely dry. The next day, my vagina was itching really bad, and it won’t stop! I’m not taking this medication again. I never had any side effects from Macrobid, but there has to be something else out there!!"

For Prevention of Bladder infection "Cost was $1,500.00, my insurance would not cover. So I called the doctor and informed them about the problem. Two hours later, my pharmacist notified me my prescription was ready. I paid 28 cents. I’m going to start calling the pharmacy before I leave when giving a brand new prescription. Would not allow me to insert a copy from my pharmacy. And did you notice all the side effects???"

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I had a grease burn on my wrist. It was very red around the burn areas and swollen. This medication took down the swelling and redness within 48 hours. But make sure you finish it anyway, even if you think the bacteria is gone. It can come back if you stop taking it! My only side effect was anxiety, like drinking a whole pot of coffee in just a couple of hours, and didn't happen until I was on it for 24 hours or so."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "About to be on my way to the hospital because this medication has given me shortness of breath with congestion, so no matter how I try to breathe, I can't get my air. My infection has gotten worse, and I am having muscle pain with a weird taste in my mouth and frequent urination, my urine is also an uncommon color than my average. I am getting confused at work and messing up and have only slept 4 hrs a night during this past prescription. I also have acne, and it's only getting worse. Don't use this."
