Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Sinusitis "At first, I found myself with more energy and simply lost my appetite, which didn't bother me. Then, the second day, I suffered nausea and vomiting. I discontinued the medicine on the second day, but the nausea and vomiting continue."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Upper Respiratory Tract Infection "When I was 15, I learned that I was allergic to Bactrim. Eleven years later, the doctor prescribed me this medication, stating that our allergies change. I was nervous to take this medicine, but I was so sick with an ear infection that I decided to give it a try. The worst experience of my life. I only took two pills, one in the morning and one before bed. I was up from 12 am to 6 am, non-stop puking. I could not hold anything down. At first, I thought I had the flu, as every bone in my body was in pain... After a few hours of sleep and not taking this Rx, I then realized I am still extremely allergic to this medication. I would never want someone to go through what I went through. I have not taken this medication since yesterday, and I have not puked."

For Bacterial Infection "I had hip surgery back in February from which I developed an infection. I have had two infection cleanouts and just finished six weeks of IV antibiotics. My doctor switched me to Bactrim, and I felt like trash. I got some bad nausea, a migraine, fever, chills, and muscle aches so bad that I thought I had the flu. The Bactrim makes me vomit as well. This was only on day one, not trying to take it. Hopefully, the doctor can switch it for me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Worst pill ever. I’d rather suffer the urgency to pee than feel like I do. I’m on my fourth day (2 pills twice a day) and won’t be taking it again ever! I had most of the side effects, there are so many, it’s nuts. By the second day, about 2 hours after taking them, symptoms worsened. Nausea, then vomiting, no appetite at all. Headache set in on the top of my head, and if I coughed, it killed in that spot. I’ve never had that ever! And stomach ache was terrible all day, including joint pain, rapid heartbeat, foggy feeling, ringing in ears, plus more, I could go on... it was like getting the flu in pill form! Finally, by day 4, I called the pharmacist since it was the weekend and no doctor around. He told me to take the last dose tonight, then stop, even though it was a 7-day course. Terrible stuff! How is this even still on the market? Complain to the doctors about it and your girlfriends, maybe they’ll get wise to not accept taking this when prescribed. Needs to go, folks."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed this for my UTI. Doctor said to take 1 pill twice daily for 3 days. After taking the first 2 pills on day 1, I felt fine. But now it’s day 2, I took one pill and started to feel miserable. My anxiety blew through the roof, I felt so sick to my stomach, I felt like puking every 5 minutes, my head is pounding, and the thought of food makes me want to throw up even more. I have never taken an antibiotic that has made me feel this bad. I thought maybe just laying down and drinking lots of water would help, but I couldn’t even do so. I was throwing up so much that I made my roommate take me to the ER. They prescribed me a dissolving tablet to help with my nausea and a whole new prescription because I felt that even after day 2, my UTI symptoms didn’t go away. I truly thought I was going to die while taking this."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Sinusitis "I literally took 3 pills and had to stop. I was worried it was a stomach virus, but nope, it was Bactrim. I’m not sensitive to antibiotics, but this was horrible. I threw up and felt nauseous about 12 hours after the third pill."

For Urinary Tract Infection "The medicine helped me greatly. It took a few days to kick in, though. I didn't experience any nausea or vomiting, which seems to be the most commonly experienced side effects, but I did experience some constipation and headache. I also felt what I'd describe as being 'out of it' and 'spacey.' I said and did the most air-headed things. Make sure you take acidophilus when taking this medicine."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I took it for a UTI, and it definitely makes me feel better a few hours later. But every single time I took it, it makes me throw up even with food. Couldn't sleep, really bad headache, and extremely sick. Had to go to the ER, and they prescribed me ondansetron, which helps with the vomiting. Macrobid is way better. If you have to take it, ask your doctor to prescribe you some type of medication that helps with the nausea."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I am 50 and cannot remember the last time I had a UTI. The Dr. prescribed Trimethoprim 200 mg for 3 days. I was so pleased it was a short round of antibiotics, and it started working immediately. However, I have had the most intense nightmares I’ve ever had in my life. I woke up the 2nd day screaming and bawling, my partner had to calm me down. 3rd night (and last), I again had a horrible nightmare. I woke up bawling and couldn’t stop. I needed to take something to calm down because I was hysterical. I also felt like vomiting both times. I woke up today and started researching this medication and nightmares and found several women who had similar experiences, so I thought I’d share so that if need be, someone taking this won’t feel like they are losing their mind. I hope this helps anyone who experiences the same side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "This worked quickly for my UTI caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. I was prescribed this for 1 pill every 12 hours for 3 days. I took this along with a variety of probiotics, and I didn’t have too many issues. My only problem was that it didn’t tell me anywhere that I should probably avoid alcohol, so after day one I had two beers and woke up in the middle of the night with nausea and vomiting. After that episode, I was totally fine, just rested throughout the day. This was surprisingly mild for me, and it worked really well. I am hoping it will help stop my reoccurring UTIs."

For Kidney Infections "I was prescribed this antibiotic twice a day for 7 days because of an aching kidney infection I’ve experienced for a week. And by day 2, I could barely hold down food without the urge to vomit, and I was already experiencing an eating disorder before then. I also had chills, a low fever, with anxiety that nearly gave me panic attacks. My feet and legs were cold and numb, and I was sweating profusely. Then I started having trouble breathing because of chest pain, it caused me to which I found out was heartburn with shortness of breath. I stopped by day 4 since I was experiencing these awful symptoms, along with the fact that my kidney felt better anyway."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "Sulfa drug allergy. My 12-year-old son was given this Bactrim DS by a doctor as he started having watery stool with a vomiting sensation. After 5-10 minutes of taking the tablet, a serious skin allergy appeared all over his body, and he vomited a lot. Then, he was taken immediately to a nearby hospital and given an Avil injection. Then, the rashes began to subside slowly and became normal after about 2 hours. Luckily, he swallowed the tablet whole and then vomited it out. Had he chewed it up and swallowed it, the allergy would have been much worse. It was a terrible experience. Please make sure you are not allergic to sulfa drugs before taking this medicine!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I'm finishing day 3 (out of 10), and I'm going to throw the bottle out. All day diarrhea, nausea like no other! I've thrown up twice just this hour, I can't get out of bed. It's terrible. I've never taken an antibiotic that gave me side effects this severe. I've had many UTIs in the past and have always been prescribed mono/macro with no issues. I can't imagine finishing all 10 days, but I'm out! As far as my UTI, it felt like it cleared up, I only felt a little pressure today. Just can't take a pill that won't allow me to do simple everyday tasks."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed this medication for a post-op infection. Within 12 hours of starting the medication, I developed a fever and rash. I continued taking the medication for 4 more days, as I did not realize it was an allergic reaction. Within the next 4 days, I developed a severe headache, vomiting, my fingers went numb, severe eye redness, severe weakness to the point I had trouble walking, and decreased urination. My doctor immediately took me off the medication and had blood work done. My liver enzymes were sky-high. The symptoms stopped as soon as the medication was discontinued, but it took about 6 months to get feeling back in my fingers."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Took my first pill in the afternoon with my lunch and drank plenty of water that day. It made my stomach hurt a little, but I figured I could deal with it as long as it helped my UTI go away. Took the 2nd pill later that night with dinner. About 2 hours later, I'm in bed, I can't stop holding my stomach. It feels like shards of glass were cutting me on the inside. My boyfriend gave me Pepto, which helped for about 30 minutes until I puked it up. It's morning time, I won't ever take those pills again. My body is so weak, and when I get up to walk, my stomach wants to push everything back up. :("

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Sinusitis "A lot of people mentioning vomiting and nausea. Be aware that you cannot drink ANY alcohol while on Bactrim. It can make you vomit or cause nausea. It’s very effective for certain UTIs depending on the strain of bacteria. Told this by my pharmacist and doctor. Unsure about sinus, but I’m trying that now."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was diagnosed with a UTI a few days ago and was put on this medication. I felt fine when they gave me my first dose at the hospital, but the prescription has me nearly vomiting. I had my husband cut the pills in half, so I am going to just do a half dose once a day. I do have chronic gastritis, IBS, and acid reflux to boot, so my stomach and antibiotics don't get along, period. I kept feeling like I had to poop all night, but nothing came out, and the strong anti-vomiting drug Zofran was powerless. Besides this horrible antibiotic, I am drinking as much water as possible and taking the AZO cranberry pills. My heart goes out to all the other ladies out there who are also going through this. Hopefully soon, doctors find a different way to treat UTIs without antibiotics."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for a urinary tract infection a couple of days ago. I was fine after the first dose they gave me at the hospital. The next day, I continued my doses, one in the morning and one in the evening. I’ve done nothing but vomit, get really dizzy, and have horrible headaches. It has not helped my UTI at all, and I’ve been on it for a couple of days."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Was prescribed this four times in seven months. Each prescription, I felt worse and worse. It was for E. coli UTI. Nausea, vomiting, and finally bed for the day. Diarrhea dripping down my legs. Told Dr., yet he prescribed it again, and I am NOT taking it! As a senior, I cannot take these side effects!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I’ve had one other UTI in the past and was prescribed another antibiotic. For my most recent UTI, I was prescribed sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and my experience for the first 3 days was an absolute nightmare. The first night, I had eaten a lot of food before taking the pill and vomited all through the night. The second day, I still had uncomfortable feelings as though my UTI was still untreated. I couldn’t pee, I couldn’t focus while using this pill. I also had bad anxiety and depression. This went on for 3 days constantly, as I was crying, unable to sleep, in very bad pain, and was taking multiple different painkillers and using sleep pills at night just so I could close my eyes. I don’t recommend using this pill for your UTI. I’ve had a better antibiotic in the past, however, this pill did clear everything up in the end. However, the pain was unbearable."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "This medication is no joke! Can't hardly eat nor enjoy anything. I'm lucky to eat one cracker and drink water, and even then, I never know if I will be able to hold it down. Vomiting and nausea are expected, but body aches, flu symptoms, sore throat, migraine headaches, and not getting a lot of sleep are not comfortable. Asked my doctor if she can switch me off this medication, but he was firm and stated I have to take it all. I'm on my second week and won't be done until my third week. It's brutal and hard to deal with. I don't see any results nor improvement for my condition either."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I started taking this medicine about 3 months ago once a day. I’ve always taken it after food and with a full cup of water. It started to make me nauseous until I got so sick I was puking and on the toilet for two days (I haven’t ever been so sick for so long). My stomach is still messed up, and I haven’t taken it for about a week. And it didn’t get rid of my acne."

For Urinary Tract Infection "The reviews on this antibiotic gave me more anxiety than the actual medication. I had no serious side effects. I only experienced migraines during the first 2 days and some leg pain/body aches that I took ibuprofen for in the following days (I took it twice daily for 7 days). I took this because the previous antibiotic did not work on me, and my infection came back the next day. But this antibiotic works, although it’s very strong. I felt relief in merely a few hours. A lot of other people write about fainting when they’re outside, but the medication specifically says to stay out of the sun. Others also write about vomiting when they didn’t eat anything with the meds. These side effects are often easily prevented, so don’t stress when you read about them. But seriously, be careful reading these, you’ll give yourself a panic attack like I did. Most people only write reviews when they had a terrible experience, so read mine with some comfort knowing that."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I took this medication and have been sick for over 3 years now. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE!! I am suffering from: chest pain, stomachache, nerves are stressed, my eyes are red constantly, I have real bad trouble breathing, my feet have swelling and lumps, cannot sleep at all during the night, pain back issues, vomiting real hard every other day, lost a lot of time not being able to work, urinating is so dark yellow. I mean, I am just in so much pain and sickness. They will lie and say you have infections, but you really don't."

For Acne "Unfortunately, I have suffered with acne since primary school. That was the start of my acne, but then it got worse all through secondary school. Because I went years and years with very clogged skin and very nasty acne, both blackheads, whiteheads, and angry pussy spots, I never thought I would be able to clear my skin up. I was then prescribed oxytetracycline, I think how it's spelled? These were amazing, they cleared my skin up down to a T. Fast forward 2 years now, my body has gotten used to them and it was on to trimethoprim to try and clear the breakouts. These are amazing, I saw results in 2 days, however, I had to stop as I started to get vomiting, nausea, headaches-the list goes on. These are great tablets, but the side effects are terrible."
