Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Super bad reaction. TERRIBLE! High fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, brown urine, liver inflammation. NO RASH. After 7 days on Bactrim DS, feeling beyond terrible, I did some internet research and suspected drug fever. Ceased taking. Went to my doctor who ran blood tests which confirmed my suspicions. Liver enzymes: AST/SGOT 335 H (mine) 14-36 (unit/L) (normal range) ALT/SGPT 581 H 9-52 (unit/L) Alk Phos 307 H 38-126 (unit/L) Levels started to go down after I stopped taking it; it took 3 months for levels to return to normal. A lot of information says you have a rash with drug reactions. I did NOT. My skin infection did clear up. It wasn't that bad to start with. I asked him for something topical. Was not my regular doc who prescribed it. My doc said it was overkill. Just because the guy's a doctor doesn't mean he is a good doctor! Be your own advocate. Another round of this crap--who knows! Sulfonamides are one of the drugs that can cause a severe reaction."

For Kidney Infections "I usually take this antibiotic because I am allergic to everything else and am afraid to take Cipro. It clears my UTI and kidney infection every time. I must say the side effects are worth the relief. What I experienced as side effects are painful tongue almost instantly, joint pain toward the end, and loss of appetite. I did notice if you drink enough water with this antibiotic, it makes all these symptoms less noticeable. The last time my tongue pain, I could hardly feel it, joint pain was there but bearable, loss of appetite, well, I saw that as a bonus. Make sure to drink lots of water, and I mean lots. Also, make sure to take a good probiotic so you don't get a yeast infection afterward. I ate a lot of yogurt with a probiotic. God bless!"

For Bacterial Infection "I got diagnosed with a UTI and was prescribed this medication. I usually don't experience any side effects or mild side effects with antibiotics. The first 3 days were pretty normal. Fast forward to the fourth day, I was feeling feverish. Had really bad headaches and nausea. I'm on my 6th day, and I haven't been able to get good sleep for 2 days for some reason. Also have no appetite, and my stomach feels terrible. This is probably the worst I've felt with any antibiotics. Not even sure if it cleared up the UTI."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim DS for a paronychia infection on my right index finger. There was no apparent abscess, so the doctor felt a script of Bactrim DS would do the job. After taking the first pill, I began to feel dizzy and nauseous. Over the next few days, I had barely any appetite and wanted to sleep all day. I felt like I could not get enough sleep. I was also extremely sensitive to the sunlight, which only enhanced my desire to sleep more. Overall, the infection did not appear to change in the 3 1/2 days on the antibiotic, but that is not to say it did not work. I just was not able to function on it, therefore I called my doctor for something else."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I had mild to severe back acne with constant breakouts on my chest and face. My dermatologist prescribed me this specifically for my back acne, but thank goodness it cleared up my face and chest! Before, on a scale of 1-10, my face and chest were around a 7, but after being on the medication, it's now a 1. My face/chest is now flawless, and my back is now only left with scars. My back acne was extremely terrible, but after using the medication for a few months, it stopped the breakouts and gave time for my skin to heal. I've used this medication for a little over one year now, and I do admit you have to be patient with the medicine. As long as you don't pick and touch your problem spots, then it should work nicely. I experienced nausea every morning when I take the medication and a loss in appetite, but it's not that bad."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "Bactrim worked miracles when I first started taking it. I was on it for almost 5 years, but it began to lose its potency, so I had to change. Overall, it helped a lot in clearing my acne. I did experience less of an appetite, but other than that, it was a positive experience."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "If you are someone with any sort of stomach sensitivities, food sensitivities, IBS, etc., I strongly recommend you DO NOT use this antibiotic. I am someone with a very sensitive digestive system and am prone to stomach bugs. I had a really bad UTI that led to a kidney infection. My first course of antibiotics was gentle, but the infection returned after finishing the course. My doctor recommended Bactrim to get the infection off completely. I suppose it worked, because my urine sample came back normal. However, I could not finish the course because of extreme side effects: complete loss of appetite, constant vomiting, diarrhea, chills, shaking, panic attacks, the works. I will never take this antibiotic again. Now, almost a week later, I still can hardly eat and have constant abdominal pain."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for my UTI, 2 times a day for 3 days. The first day I have a lot of confusion. By the second day, I was having horrible headaches, loss of appetite, and a stiff neck. Now I’m terrified to take my last dose tonight. To my knowledge, it appears the medication is working, however, I don’t intend to ever take it again. I hope the side effects will stop once I finish my dosage. I would look around before trying this one."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was on Bactrim for 7 days for a UTI infection. It cleared it up and didn't seem to have many problems until the last one I took. I broke out in hives, itching everywhere, and I thought I was going to die. I still feel horrible from taking it, with a loss of appetite and anxiety. Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I had an ingrown toenail, so my podiatrist removed it and put me on cephalexin for a week. After taking all of them, my toe was still infected. She put me on Bactrim to be taken twice a day for 10 days. Twenty-four hours after my first dose, my mood completely changed. I was depressed and miserable. Day 2, I was spinning, it was impossible to function for daily tasks, and I had no appetite. Day 3, I had a full-blown panic attack, then extreme anxiety, and following that, several heart palpitations. Day 6, I had a rash across my midsection. I stopped taking them that day and called my podiatrist, as my toe still wasn't getting better. She advised I stop and see her later on that day. She wound up removing another piece of nail that had been left behind. When I told her all of the symptoms, she said that I'm allergic. As a person who suffers from food allergies, this terrified me. After a week, the nausea, headache, and spinning started to lighten up, but it took around two months to get back to my normal routine. And to think... these symptoms are NORMAL for this medication."

It cleared up my moderately severe acne very quickly, no negative side effects. The only side effect I had was decreased appetite, which I was not opposed to, as I usually eat too much anyway!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this medication for a UTI. After 1 pill, I woke up feeling nauseous, nonstop vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, weakness, loss of appetite, fever, chills. I am currently on day 3 and will not be taking this anymore. I have zero improvements, which is to be expected after only 3 days. I was told to take 2 pills daily for 10 days. I can’t take the extreme side effects, and I don’t see why a doctor would prescribe this, with this many horrible side effects. I thought I had a stomach bug or food poisoning until I decided to look up the side effects and realized it’s the medicine. My kind was 800/160MG TB. I don’t recommend."

For Kidney Infections "I was terrified to start this medication, sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim, after all the awful reviews, but I only had a 3-day course of 2 pills a day, so I thought I could hang in there if I got any bad side effects. To my surprise, I completed my prescription and had very mild side effects. I did lose my appetite and was not hungry at all while on this. Other than that, I didn’t have any other issues. I do take a probiotic, so that may have helped with any stomach issues that people have complained about. But I think this medicine did wonders! Cleared up my kidney infection in 3 days! Give it a try, take a probiotic, and as long as you're not allergic, you should be just fine."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Took 1 dose (first dose) at 6 am on a Tuesday. By 8 am, throat was sore. 9 am, feet went numb and started feeling odd, throat hurt more as well. By 11 am, feet were red and raw and hurt like nails poking through them. Genitals became beet red and raw! Had a fever and loss of appetite. Did not take any more after the first dose. Thursday, feet were better but still had a sore throat and genitals still raw and felt nauseous. Friday, still sore throat, genitals not as red or raw but developed a hive on them. It's now Saturday and still have a sore throat, color is back to normal on genitals but still have a hive and now another in the pubic hair area. I'm kinda freaking out now and probably go back to the doctor today. All this from one damn pill! UTI still there."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I always get digestive issues (severe nausea, diarrhea, gas, upset stomach) from antibiotics. I hadn't taken Bactrim before. For me, the side effects have been very minimal. I eat a serving of carbs about 10 minutes before taking it (bread, pasta, or a banana) and then drink a large glass of water with it, and have made sure to drink a lot of water generally. I'm also taking a probiotic midday. The side effects I've had are being more tired than usual, low appetite, and a bit of a dull headache for a couple of days. After the initial dose, I had intense nausea, but I had not eaten. I have one day remaining of the 7-day course. After one day on Bactrim, my infection symptoms went away. I'll need a follow-up, but so far, yay Bactrim!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Received a seven-day prescription for Bactrim, and on the 5th day, lost appetite, had terrible body aches, and extreme fatigue. On the 6th day, had a fever and chills too. Stopped the treatment on the 7th day. Then, on the evening of the 8th day, developed a rash all over my upper body and face. Pharmacist recommended Benadryl, which helped somewhat. Having a urinalysis in a week and surely hope it worked and cleared up my urinary tract infection."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "Worst medicine ever. I'm not allergic to anything, by the way. I was prescribed for a UTI and had to stop after 5 days. Migraines, eyeballs throbbed, chest was in excruciating pain, neck pain, upper and lower back pain, stomach and ovary pain, and leg pain, especially in the knees. On top of that, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, the immediate and random need to throw up, and worst of all, a red rash all over my body. To top that off, loss of sex drive. I have never had an allergic reaction to a medicine before. I will never take this again. BEWARE!!!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim 800/160 mg for 5 days, 2 times a day. Day 1, no problem, just lost appetite. Day 2, no appetite, kidney pain, hands got shaky, and was very anxious. I considered stopping the prescription. Day 3 (5th pill), within an hour of taking it, my heart rate got up to 176, and I was gasping for air. I called 911 because it's just myself and my 2 young children here. Paramedics ruled it as a panic attack. Never had this problem, so I know it's from the medication. Absolutely will never take this again. I'm currently still on day 5, so if anything else crazy happens, I'll update. I wish these didn't continue releasing medication for 12 hours... The anxious feelings are still coming in waves. Trying to drink a lot of water to flush this poison out of my system. Currently having no more UTI symptoms, so I think it cleared the infection. Giving it a 3 because it did what it was supposed to, quickly, but definitely NOT worth the side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "The first day, I experienced some nausea. Now? I have a sore in my mouth that popped up out of nowhere, and one side of my bottom lip is swollen. I'm so sick that I can't eat anything and have zero appetite. I keep getting the shakes and chills that weren't there before starting it. I suffer from anxiety, and anxiety is a common side effect of this medication - so now my anxiety is through the roof, and it's also caused severe insomnia. I'm constipated, have terrible muscle spasms and cramps in my legs. I've never had an issue with a sulfa drug before, but after this, I will definitely not take one ever again. It's not worth the side effects/allergic reaction."

No change in symptoms the second time I was prescribed this medication since it is a weaker antibiotic for UTIs. Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Took Bactrim 4 days for skin infection, then quit due to not sleeping or being able to eat. I drank plenty of water but ended up feeling like my head was going to explode, joints aching, vision blurry, felt like I was being poisoned. The doctor said to continue taking, just make sure you eat. I let them know I was not able to eat, so I quit on my own, nobody's going to know what is going on with their body better than themselves, and it was just poisoning me. Three days after stopping Bactrim, I have a rash all over my body, and a week later still feel like my head is going to explode, very tired and vision blurry. Doctors put on my file to never take again as I am allergic to it."
