For Crohn's Disease "I was prescribed azathioprine for my Crohn's disease. During the first month of taking this drug, I felt mildly nauseated upon taking the tablet and generally unwell. In hindsight, I think this feeling was subtly getting worse over the period to the extent that it became extreme nausea to the point where I had no appetite, and after eating a few mouthfuls, I would be sick. I read the side effects of the drug and reported this to my consultant. One evening I became very ill, however, vomiting and ultimately collapsing and having a seizure. In the hospital, they determined that my liver function was severely affected, with some residual kidney issues also evident. After a 4-day stay in the hospital and 6 weeks at home, the liver function returned. Diagnosis was toxic hepatitis caused as a side effect of this drug. I have never had any allergic reaction to anything, this drug did not suit me."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "I’ve been on azathioprine for about 8 years (21 years old, btw), and I wouldn’t say it’s amazing, but really it helps a lot, especially with the Humira. I stopped taking my azathioprine due to COVID-19 and actually got numerous abscesses and a fistula, which left me in the hospital for a week, and it was the worst feeling. Don’t read the side effects as a con, I’ve been on it 8 years and hair loss has not been an issue, neither has pancreatitis. The only issue I got was from not taking it, so guys look after yourselves, take azathioprine, and beat Crohn's."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "Have been on azathioprine for 7 years for Crohn's maintenance and have not had a single relapse in this time. Had previously had an allergic reaction, but for some reason, I now seem to be able to take it. Currently suffering from dizziness, but doubt this is due to the azathioprine as I have had it so long. Found that it works very quickly for me when I start taking it and is a lot better than being on steroids."

For Multiple Sclerosis "I have spasms, which is slowly making me less able to walk. I took azathioprine for 3 years, on 150 mg per day (gradual increase), with no side effects, normal blood counts, and no feelings of good or bad effects. After 3 years, I think the tablets have slowed my disability decline."

For Multiple Sclerosis "Just got a new Rx for AZA. Had RRMS for 21 years, just crossed over into SPMS. R-side foot drop, tingling up to knee caps. R-side weak. Tried all the injectables, Acthar, Prednisone, Solumedrol, so this is my last line of defense. Wish me luck. Will report back at 1 week intervals."

For Pemphigus "I am a 38-year-old female who was diagnosed with mouth, throat, and esophageal pemphigus vulgaris in November 2018. I was given prednisone almost immediately, and two shots of rituximab in January 2019. In January 2019, I was started on azathioprine at a dose of 150 mg. I was doing very well until November 2019... as of November, I’ve been getting these weird chills, especially in my back. Went to the ER twice-blood tests were run, and on both occasions, I was told the only problem is a high count of WBC in my urine-I don’t believe that is the cause of my chills. All I know is that they are driving me nuts. Can anyone relate?"

"I have discoid lupus. I've been on azathioprine 50 mg twice a day for 10+ years. I have had zero side effects from this drug! At one point, my doctor decided to cut the dosage in half, and lupus immediately started flaring again. They switched me back to the 50 mg daily, and I was quickly in remission again. So thankful for this drug!"

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "Took my first dose, and 3 hours later, I vomited 6 times in an hour and had pure water coming into my ostomy bag with 14 empties, all in an hour, where I was unconscious from severe dehydration and rushed to the ER. They had to pump 3 bags of IV fluid in fast, and now I'm still recovering days after. I was okay before, and now I have issues, which sucks just from one dose."

Azathioprine for Rheumatoid Arthritis "I've been taking Imuran for 2 weeks now to treat my inflammatory arthritis, since no other drug seemed to help. I haven't noticed any improvement yet, but the nausea is unbearable. I'm not able to eat anything, and I'm constantly hungry. Reminds me of my pregnancy morning sickness, though it's not as bad as methotrexate was. I've already lost a bit of weight due to this. Yesterday, I started taking anti-nausea medication to be able to cope. I hope the side effects end soon and the drug helps treat my symptoms."

For Inflammatory Bowel Disease "I have Crohn's, but it is in my small intestine (not terminal ileum this time) and worse in my mouth. Most of the drugs used (except steroids, which can only be used for a short period of time) are mainly for the terminal ileum and colon and therefore do nothing for my problem. Worse, Entyvio didn't help and made the mouth ulcers significantly worse to the point of being unable to brush my teeth, eat almost anything, and was eating away at my gums and cheeks. Azathioprine has been the solution that has kept the mouth ulcers at bay."

"I was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome about a year ago. My initial prescription was for hydroxychloroquine. After 6 months, I didn't see any benefit and also developed severe itching all over my body. My doctor switched me to azathioprine, and I'm surprised to see no other posts for this drug azathioprine for Sjögren's. My main problem is that I ache all over all the time. I started at 50 mg for 2 weeks and then moved to 100 mg for a few weeks now. So far, I still ache all over and have seen no improvement in any symptoms. Based on this, I'm not sure it's helping me at all."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "I've had Crohn's disease for 43 years and have been on everything. Each new GI doc I get seems to love azathioprine. It has never, ever, ever done anything for me. On the plus side, it hasn't given me any side effects either. Note: historically, they have prescribed a low dose, 50 mg I believe. Then I finally got a doc who knew that the dose needs to be a 'therapeutic' dose which is higher (in my case 3.5 times higher) - they'll know the correct dosage by blood work."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "This medicine, azathioprine, made me have terrible migraines from just one dose. Took 5 pills for 250 mg and had a migraine for 3 days straight. I wanted to cry. I really wanted this medication to work along with my Humira since the doctor said they go together. I wanted it to work so much that I tried it again, this time, 4 pills and had the same reaction. I will never try this medicine again. They put this medicine as an allergy on my chart. It's sad because my Crohn's isn't under control and I wished my body would tolerate this medication, but for some reason, it can't."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "My gastrointestinal doctor put me on this medication for my Crohn's. After taking this medication, I was taken off by Dr. who believed I was having an allergic reaction. Made me feel very weak, trouble breathing, sick to my stomach, cold, and fast heartbeat."

For Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis "I have Wegener's granulomatosis (aka granulomatosis with polyangiitis). Was on Imuran for two years, have to switch to Neoral now. Apparently, it's not working as it should be. Dreading the switch, however, because Imuran gave me few to no side effects. Have experienced hair loss after about a year, but could also have a different cause (I take lots of other medication and many non-drug-related causes have to be considered as well, e.g., hormones, stress,...). Also, a very cheap drug for me, but we have universal health care in Belgium, so don't know if this is also the case elsewhere."

For Crohn's Disease "This is the only medication I have had. I had a resection and was on it for 3 years. It took 3 months to work. Unfortunately, it did make me unwell and I felt sickly at about the 2-year point. I tried to persevere but had to stop. I tried another immunosuppressant but again for only 2 weeks as this made me sick too. The side effects are the taste of chemicals."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "I lost all my hair, my bone marrow was suppressed to high heaven, and it gave me acid reflux, so I can’t even eat properly. This drug has made the last 2 weeks of my life a living nightmare. I’m on the road to recovery now, but it’s gonna take a week or two before I start feeling normal again. Screw this medicine."
