"It got worse. I took it for 7 weeks, and at the end chose to stop. Patches were red all the time with acitretin. Nails got worse (weak and rough), and thinning of skin didn't help. After I stopped, everything slowly became better. I went for other alternative treatment."

"Started our daughter on 10 mg daily 8 days ago. Her plaques got very itchy and dry, red and sore. Today came the severe joint pain! Shame because it was starting to work. We were advised to stop and are awaiting approval for biologics. It’s so awful having to treat a 7-year-old with such heavy-duty medicines. Would recommend the medication if you can tolerate it."

"Only used this for six weeks, and my dermatologist took me off them. My psoriasis was on the soles of my feet and very severe. Days after taking acitretin, I started getting large, itchy lumps on my legs, followed by psoriasis all over my legs, which I didn’t have prior to starting these tablets. I had bleeding gums, extremely itchy hands, and cracked lips, and I also ended up with blisters on my legs. I really wanted these tablets to work, but I’ve got to say I’m glad I’m not taking them anymore. I’m going to try cyclosporine next, my daily dosage was 30 mg."

"I was prescribed this medication for psoriasis and found it was reasonably effective to begin with at 10 mg per day. After a couple of months, the condition became quite inflamed, and my dermatologist took me off it for a period of 2 weeks. After resuming the treatment, the results were reasonable once again; but the side effects became too significant to tolerate. Most notably were skin irritation and redness in various other regions previously unaffected, insufferable ringing in ears, and weakened nails. Blood tests revealed an undesirable effect on liver and cholesterol readings. I have given this medication away on the basis that the cure is worse than the condition."

"Was prescribed acitretin, and after 8 weeks, the patches became larger, bright red, and skin was shedding around the areas. The psoriasis spread everywhere, areas where I have never had any problem. Hair started to fall out in large quantities, and I lost half my head of hair. Gave it up as it was expensive and not working, on the contrary, it seemed to make it much worse."

"Been on acitretin for 3 months, was on 50 mg, then 25 mg, now 10 mg, but I am getting rashes on legs. Since starting this drug, it has helped with the severe psoriasis, also, I am losing my hair."

"Started with 10 mg per day, was advised by the dermatologist of potential side effects: dry lips, nose, possible hair loss. After 3 weeks, experienced pressure in the left side of my brain with fluid buildup in my left ear, diagnosed with a severe ear infection. Then experienced extreme bone pain in my shoulders. Stopped using the drug with the dermatologist reducing the dose to 10 mg every 2nd day. 2 weeks later, my fingertips started to peel and developed onycholysis, causing all my nails to separate from the nail bed. No previous psoriasis on my fingers. All of the above are known side effects of acitretin, so would advise anyone starting on this treatment. The drug and the repeat prescriptions are now all in the garbage where they belong. Psoriasis cleared up slightly. I'm now back on methotrexate 10 mg per week, no side effects, and seems to be doing the job."
