I have been on the generic Wellbutrin for depression for about 3 to 4 months now and have packed on a significant amount of weight. I cannot get enough sleep, but I notice that I toss and turn all night long. Has anyone else noticed that this is a side effect of the medicine?
Does Bupropion make you gain tons of weight and also make you a very restless sleeper?

Yes, I am also having same effect of gaining weight. I am even reduced calories and my stomach is huge and including buttocks. My doctor said I should be losing weight. I have put on 9 pounds and 2 months. Plus I have ringing ears!
I have been taking the generic wellbutrin, Buprorion for about 2 months and I have gain a considerable amount of weight all in my abdomen. And I cannot stop having the craving to eat all the time.
I have all the same symptons you do and I have gained 25 lbs. In 2 months. Are you going to continue taking it? It also makes me angry and rude and I say things I normally would not say.
I have gained 30 pounds on it this past year. I never suspected it was this medication because it is supposed to help people lose weight. I haven't done anything else different. Last month I even got desperate and took hcg injections for 28 days. I followed everything I was supposed to do, and still no weight loss!! I am so miserable and frustrated. The only thing I know b to do is quit taking the burro prion and see what happens. I'm going to start tomorrow as I've already taken it today
Everyone has a different metabolism. Even though wellbutrin is not an antidepressant that is known to cause weight gain, it can happen. Also, other factors could be whether or not you are taking any other medications at the same time. Antihistamines can cause weight gain as well, as many heart medications, and many other medications as well. Eating a lot of carbs can cause you to crave more carbs.
This has been my experience as well although my psychiatrist keeps informing me I should be losing weight on it I've gained 15 lbs in 3 months. I forgot to take it today and no nightly binge like usual.
I tried several of the generics of Wellbutrin SR as well as generics of Wellbutrin XL. When I took the XL version manufactured by Par pharmaceuticals. The binders and fillers are different in the generics although the main ingredient is the same. I did not experience that problem when I switched to another generic. You might want to try another generic. Maybe have a conversation with your pharmacist about it.
**I meant to say that I experienced the same problem when I took the "Par" version. I had carb cravings and wanted to eat all the time! Problem solved when I switched to another generic.
I began Bupropion HCL SR 7 days ago and I lost 6 pounds. I don't have much of an appetite. When I do eat, I eat very healthy. I have not exercised in the past 3 weeks, I haven't been pretty active at all the past few weeks. So far I find the medication very helpful for my depression. I was removed from Celexa and given this medication due too low sex drive and weight gain. My sex drive is improving with Estradiol my gynecologist prescribed.
I've been on wellbutrin for 2 months and i too gained a lot of weight. So you're not by yourself on that.
As far as weight gain goes recently I have seen it as far as weight gain goes recently I have seen a commercial where they are using wellbutrin in and as a prescription diet medication. Have you however noticed that if you are anxious, worried, or having a bad day, that you consume more. This would be especially at night when you can't sleep. I do not know the strength or frequency that you take it, but if it's twice a day the second dose has to be before 4pm. Now if you take it after that, you may find you are restless, can't sleep, so we feel if we eat maybe we can sleep. That's when it gets you and me. Keep a journal , and to thine own self be true, only you need to see it, then only you can see where the problem lies, if it has become habit. Let me know.
Also to people who are saying it is weight neutral... ummmm no! I am not eating differently and I exercise. The amount of extra calories I would have to take in to add 15 pounds in 3 months would be quite a bit! Only difference in my life is the bupropion.
It's your individual metabolism that's causing the weight gain. Wellbutrin IS weight neutral but there's an exception to every rule.
I agree on the weight gain. I have been taking it for 3 months and gained 15 pounds! Like others said all in my waist and butt. No matter what I do I just keep adding pounds... It's irritating! I sleep fine but after I take in the morning I feel real jittery a few hours later. Not energetic... Like I'm freaking out.
As has been said, Wellbutrin is considered weight neutral. It is the ONLY antidepressant I've used that didn't make me gain weight. In fact, I lost weight that I had gained on other antidepressants when I started Wellbutrin.
However, trouble sleeping is a common side effect and you might talk to your prescribing doctor fpr advise on that. Perhaps a dosage adjustment?
I have taken 100 mg of Wellbutrin once a day for 10 years and never had any issues. Three weeks ago I started on Wellbutrin XL 300 mg and I have gained 5 pounds, my blood pressure is out of control, I have major insomnia, weird dreams and I never remember dreams, chronic GI upset, and my face and neck look so fluid retentive that my friends have commented on it. I am aware that most people lose weight, but I read that 14% gain. I haven't made any other lifestyle changes so I know its the Wellbutrin. Who knows maybe the 100 mg had the same effect in a subtle way that I hadn't noticed. So yes it makes you gain tons of weight because 5 pound in 3 weeks is a lot and a sleeping 3 inconsistent hours a night is restless sleeping. Hope those details help someone out there.
Hi Lisa: It's strange, but I had a similar experience when I went to Wellbutrin XL by Par pharmaceuticals. Which ever XL generics I took of it gave me unwanted side effects. But I have had a very good experience with the SR generics of Wellbutrin made both by Mylan, and currently for me, the SR by Sandoz.
I sleep better on this SR which is the 12hour time-release, than I do on XL which is the 24hour time-release. SR does not interfere with my sleep patterns. Maybe because the 24hr release is still putting it into your system at night so that it affects your sleep? IDK.
I have never in my life had an issue with weight but I am here to tell you that my bupropion HCL XL (PAR) has definitely made me gain weight. My doctors have always warned me about all of my past Ned's causing weight gain and none if then did. This one, he said, caused no weight gain. Whatever!!! I'm still not over weight but this is very alarming to me. All of the weight is in my stomach, hips, butt. I've never cared for sweets but have been craving them while on this med. what gives?
This is the same effect I have had regarding sweets. I am in my middle 60's and have NEVER like sweets until I was put on this medication. My entire life I ranged from a size 2 to 6. Now it's a 2X and I am miserable. The weight affects my breathing and my joints; however the doctor's don't seem to listen and say it's just middle age spread. What age do they consider middle, really?
I have been on this anti-depressant for about 6 years. I have gained from from 125 to 190.
Me too though it helped me quit smoking I'm tired of Dr's and others saying oh no it make people lose weight!!!
