I have been on the generic Wellbutrin for depression for about 3 to 4 months now and have packed on a significant amount of weight. I cannot get enough sleep, but I notice that I toss and turn all night long. Has anyone else noticed that this is a side effect of the medicine?
Does Bupropion make you gain tons of weight and also make you a very restless sleeper?

For those that gained (believe it may be my culprit, too) can anyone tell me what happened with your weight after you weaned off? TIA
I have been on the generic for Wellbutrin since March of this year and have since gained 25 pounds. This was after I had worked so hard to drop over 35 pounds in the middle of 2018 and was able to keep it off until I started the generic for Wellbutrin. I have kept up with my exercise and still stick to a vegan diet just like i had when i lost all my weight in 2018 and was keeping it off even without being super restrictive about food and was fine, but as soon as i went on the generic i gained all the weight back in less than 6 months. I’m going cold turkey and quitting this not only for the weight gain but like others i have had horrible nightmares (when i actually do sleep) but most nights i toss and turn for hours or cannot sleep past 5am. I’m also just feeling indifferent to everything, so if this isn’t even helping me to feel good AND is making me fat well I’d rather be slightly depressed and able to fit into my clothes and get a decent nights sleep.
Please be aware that the effects of this drug varies based on various factors in people and aspects of the drug (metabolism, dose, previous drugs taken, age, gender, length of time on it and on other drugs, tolerance, other drugs taking at same time, manufacturer of drug(s), levels and type of emotional abuse, sensitivity to placebo effects, expected effects of drug, allergic factors, genetic factors effecting all of above, training of prescriber, relationship with prescriber and previous prescriber(s), how rapidly taper this and other drugs if decide to taper) . These are all true for other psychiatric drugs so applies to other questions about this class of drugs.
Doctors think they know everything and won’t say they don’t know things or take time to research what people say to them or ask them about.
Basing all this by working for pharmaceutical companies for 13 years in scientific capacity, teaching medical school for 10 yrs, and working in a hospital for 3 yrs on many floors and finally my experiences taking different psychiatric drugs and doing much research.
Am a 67 year old PhD in Biopsychology and have had extensive training evaluating research and learning misinformation about drugs.
Yes it absolutely makes some people gain weight and I am one of them. Been on this for three to four weeks and have gained 10lbs. Exhausted, miserable from the weight gain, and don’t like it at all. Taking myself off cold turkey today. Thanks for the forum. You helped me realize this is only getting worse not better. I’m done. I’d rather deal with some authentic depression than be depressed because I’m fat, sluggish, and can’t fit in my clothes.
"Metabolic
Very common (10% or more of users): Weight loss greater than 2.3 kg (up to 28%), weight gain greater than 2.3 kg (up to 11%)
Common (1% to 10% of users): Anorexia, decreased appetite, increased appetite"
Wellbutrin is "weight neutral" meaning IF you experience a metabolic change it could go either way
"Psychiatric
Very common (10% or more of users): Insomnia (up to 45%), sedation (up to 19.8%)
Again, it can go either way. Since everyone responds differently to a medication it all depends on your individual metabolism.
You are not alone. For some reason I have been gaining weight as well and am always super hungry since upping my dosage to 300mg. It took about six months for my body to adapt to sleeping normally again when I was on 150mg. I started having weird bad dreams about 3-5 times a night. Before meds I barely remembered one dream every month or two. When I’m upped my dosage to 300mg the dreams started again but were short lived and only happened for a week or two. I still have a weird one maybe once a week, but at least it’s not 4-5 times a night.
Not sure why I’m hungrier all the time now that I’m on 300mg when it is supposed to make you lose weight. The SSRIs I tried years ago actually made me lose weight when those typically make you gain weight. I think every body’s different. Wish I had an answer about the weight thing. Go figure, the med I actually like makes me fat. :/
Yes it does make you gain weight. You lose weight at first like Prozac then start to gain weight.
I gained weight as well. I was on it a few months and gained about 20 lbs, and after I went off I lost the weight. Doctors tried to tell me it wasn't possible but it was the only thing that was changed during that time frame. It's frustrating to have my experience discounted. I understand the tendency to do this because it doesn't fit into the paradigm of what usually happens with the medication- but I wish this symptom of weight gain could be used as a clue as to what could be going on with the body's chemistry.
I just started taking Wellbutrin. I did not really gain weight on the scale, but could not get into any of my pants. All the weight went around my stomach, waist and butt. I have already gained 20 pounds on rexulti and am not fitting into any of my clothes. The doctor wants to give me shock treatments, but I’m afraid I’ll lose my mind. I’m so tired of being sick and being on all these meds. I think I’m going back to the rexulti and taking it every other day. It probably won’t work. I also take lamictal, ziprasidone and clonazepam. So many meds. The severe depression started when I was on a high and moved into a house I take. My family has a severe history of bipolar on both sides, so I’m doomed. Gaining all this weight is so depressing especially when they advertise that it makes you lose weight. I’m afraid I won’t get better.
Also I’m so constipated that I don’t have bowel movements for days. I don’t know if I should take laxatives or not. The doctor does not see, to be concerned about the weight gain and says I’m just especially sensitive to medicines. I know I’m going on and on, but can anyone give me hope??? I appreciate people’s honest rereviews of the meds, because it’s often so opposite of what they tell you. I’m just not doing well and need some help. Thanks.
Hi Spades12. Thanks for you post. I appreciate the honesty on these boards as well. I don't really have answers. One thought though- I decided to go to a functional doctor and this month I'm getting some tests that check gut health, hormones etc. I wonder if this kind of thing could benefit you since you have constipation, and the way the weight is settling on you etc. I'm doing this testing since there is such a gut / mind connection and hormones affect so many things (weight, mood etc)
Again... I was taking Wellbutrin XL and only this... when I went back for my 2 week check up I had already gained 5 pounds and someone that's trying to lose weight IT IS Noticeable especially in the face... I wish the doctors would just listen to there patients sometimes
Yes! This has made me gain weight despite working out and eating healthy. I have also been suffering from fatigue, so I am wondering if the Bupropion is causing this as well. I think any drug can affect people differently. Thank you for posting this, I don’t feel alone and ‘crazy’ for not haveing the typical side affects.
sounds like the majority of these people are reading wellbutrin xl with additional anti depressants which, to me, explains the weight gain and I've noticed that the one's using it to quit smoking also gained weight. I wonder if anybody is on wellbutrin SR, I've been prescribed 1/2 a dose of 100mg 1 a day in the morning and I'm real leery about trying a new antidepressant considering I've tried many others with bad side effects that didn't seem subside. also what scares me is the side effect of a possible seizure. I want to try this because of my depression but I get anxiety attacks as well. the pharmacist told me it's less likely for me to have a seizure because I don't have a history of having them and he said what increases this risk is combining it with other medications.
I also don't think I'll like the more anxious, heart racing, jittery feeling either but I suppose if I take my clonazepam then that should help counteract this side effect.
anyone else taking wellbutrin SR? what are you experiencing and at what doses please
thank you
I’ve read a lot of the answers on here about people not gaining weight on Wellbutrin. I did gain weight on this drug but every person is different. Every antidepressant has caused weight gain for me. I lost weight when I quit taking them.
I have been taking it for nearly a year and have put on over 20lbs... thought I was depressed before.
When I FIRST started taking generic bupropion SR (150 mg 2 x a day) in August of 2017, my appetite decreased, I became more hyper as I gained energy, and I lost about 15 lbs. I felt happier and more enthusiastic about life, and was especially happy about my weight loss. But as the year went on the extra energy kind of dimmed down and my appetite came back. I gained the weight back, plus a little more. Its as if my metabolism slowed down even more than it was before. I actually weaned myself off of it for a few months. Didn't lose or gain weight during the process. But I began taking it again in October of 2018 and didn't lose ANY weight this time. I had noticeably more energy immediately after taking it, but it wasn't as extreme as the first time this drug hit my body. I'm convinced that while in the short term it may cause weight loss, it doesn't last. At least not for everyone.
