I have been on the generic Wellbutrin for depression for about 3 to 4 months now and have packed on a significant amount of weight. I cannot get enough sleep, but I notice that I toss and turn all night long. Has anyone else noticed that this is a side effect of the medicine?
Does Bupropion make you gain tons of weight and also make you a very restless sleeper?

I have been Type one Diabetic for 45 years. I have had severe depression for years and had been put on Lexapro because at first, they thought it was an anxiety issue and Lexapro made me lose weight and lowered my blood sugars, but did nothing for the depression.
Last June things got very serious and on my own I did some research and talked to my doctor and was put on Bupropion XL. Things changed for me a 100% within hours in a good way. I had energy and I felt like me again.
The negative side effects I noticed was that I had a very hard time getting any sleep and within 2 months, I started having very severe carb cravings in the afternoon. I would try and walk around or read or eat almonds or something to get ahold of it but it was on another level of Challenging.
Then I started noticing that my eyes were blurry... And that my blood sugars were consistently higher. Then the final negative thing was that within 5 months I had gained 20 pounds and I had no idea how. My joints have been swollen and in so much pain. I do have arthritis that runs in my family, but it seems like it just has been a sudden onset and my joints are permanently affected in my hands and my knees are so bad I can't run at all anymore.I have never been over 132lbs and I'm only 5'3 I am now 150 and it is ridiculous!!
I also seem to notice I have like space moments where I'm talking and I cannot think of the word and I know it's there but I cannot Get it out and I find myself having some very awkward moments in conversations.
The positive is that this is the only Medication that has taken the serious depression from me and I am concerned about having to discontinue it and going back into that hell. Are there any other diabetics who have had experience with this I am taking Bupropion XL by Actavis. I did have another generic and it was terrible.
And has anyone noticed a huge difference with the SR versus the XL in a 300 mg amount? Because it can keep you up at night, my concern with the SR is that you would probably have to take 1in the evening and 1in the morning and the one taken in the evening, I worried would keep me up all night.
Any kind of feedback, especially from those that have diabetes would be appreciated.
Ive been on for little over a month and have noticed weight gain also! Plus constipation which isnt good as I already have IBS-C. But it is working I must say. Just hate side affects from all medicines!
Yes, it made me anyways everyone body is different so everyone will react different to different medications but I know I put on a lot of weight since i started taken Wellbutrin I also noticed that I go to sleep a lot later and when I do finally go to sleep I toss and turn a lot so I'm gradually getting off.
I had to make an account just because of this question! I have been on Wellbutrin XL 300 for about one year to date. I went vegan about three months after I started taking it and have lost about 25 pounds. I chalked it up to being vegan and working out regularly, but recently I have started to PACK PACK PACK on the pounds. In two weeks I have gained 10 pounds! I thought I was going nuts until I read this and realized I CHANGED my pharmacy! I moved a few miles and now go to Target for my meds which syncs up exactly around the time I started to gain weight. I will have to check when I get home which generic they use but I’m 99% sure it’s differnt than the one I had before.
In my experience, taking two 150 mgs of sr make me tired. I can never remember to take the second dose, so I take them both in the morning and a long with my other meds, I get a few more hours of sleep. If it is activating for you , bless the power. Best of luck to you! As far as I know people generally lose weight on this med, I would say stick to it for 8 weeks and give it a chance!
For the people responding, what form are you on and what brand of generic? I find that it makes a big difference in effectiveness and side effects.
I have been on the generic brand of Wellbutrin xl 150 mg. for 3 months and I am 5’2” just under 100 lbs. This makes me hungry all the time. I am very active and an avid and fast walker 6 nights a week up to 4 miles a day and yes it has caused weight gain! I’ve tried to cut down on my eating as well. It also causes me to not sleep well.
I seriously can not believe that the doctors have thought I was pigging out! I have been gaining weight since 2013 with the wellbutrin. 30 lb to be exact. Work out most days. 3-4 miles running on the machine. And yes I do sweat. Doctor asked me that question. Dah... Recently started on Contrave that has wellbutrin in it. I have packed on an extra 10 pd. in less than 3 weeks! So fed up. Glad I found this site. Started going down the med list. Taking myself off ASAP. Sleep, forget about that. So restless and I take my meds in the Am.
Oh my gosh. I am so relieved to see others have gained weight while taking Wellbutrin. My Dr. told me i would lose so i thought it was me. Exercising regularly & eating healthy & i keep packing on the lbs. I am taking myself off of it. So i'll see how it goes.
I have gained weight on this generic as well, I also toss and turn. While doing my own research i found that it can make you gain weight or lose, it depends on your body. We just happened to be those people. I'm getting off anti depressants all together soon. So we will see what happens afterward.
Yes and yes. It's not in your head. I went on it to be able to drag myself into an awful job. I gained 70 pounds in 6 months while not changing my diet at all and going to spin class 5 days a week. Yes, 70 pounds. I since quit the job and the drugs, I leisurely bike, do restorative yoga, and my job entails me walking on nature trails. I am exerting myself WAY less and full disclosure, I ate an entire pizza this week. I'm a pig and the weight is melting off. I'm happier than I've ever been. This is the generic brand I'm referring to. That's my experience on it, I have no idea what they claim. I would think just like any other drug, there's always those few people who have uncommon reactions.
I too had trouble sleeping on it. Or it was just coincidental that when I quit my job, I slept better. The weight definitely wasn't a coincidence. You are not crazy!
The same happened to me I want from a hundred 27 lb to 156 in 4 months I tried all kinds of diets I cannot lose the weight unless I stop taking it any suggestions
I have been on it for at least 2 years and has gain 80 pounds
I have been on Wellbutrin for about 4 mos & have gained 15 lbs. I am miserable & wanting to go of it. I feel that doctors don't listen to their patients & just go by what the manufacturer & drug rep tell them.
I took Wellbutrin XL several yrs ago. I gained a significant amount of weight then and it took me many times of asking my dr to change my medication. I kept telling him it was causing me to gain weight and he kept telling me it did not! He finally took me off of it. I don't recall any other side affects. My now dr , with my complaint of Wellbutrin causing me to gain weight, has put me on the generic. I am already having almost constant hunger. She put me on it is because I have really bad fibromyaliga and I wanted to go back on Savella for it. She told me if I did that she would have to take me off of Cymbalta. She did not want to do that. She told me I could stay on Cymbalta and take Wellbutrin at the same time and she insisted I would not gain weight. WRONG!! I also cannot get enough sleep. PRuthA
