Streptococcus Equi Bacterial Extract

Strepvax II Indications

This product has been shown to be effective for the vaccination of healthy horses against Streptococcus equi infection (strangles). This product was licensed prior to the requirement to establish a minimum age for use. The duration of immunity has not been determined. For more information regarding efficacy and safety data go to productdata.aphis.usda.gov.

This product has also been shown to be effective against strangles when its use is combined with good hygiene and the segregation of affected individuals.

Composition

This product is a concentrated, aluminum hydroxide-adsorbed suspension of purified antigens derived from S. equi cells, and contains the antigenic protein of S. equi but is essentially free of the toxic and irritating substances present in whole cell bacterins. Thimerosal added as a preservative.

Directions and dosage: Shake well before each use. Using aseptic technique, inject 1 mL intramuscularly, preferably in the hind quarters. Use a separate sterile needle for each injection. For primary vaccination, give 3 doses at intervals of 3 weeks. The presence of maternal antibody is known to interfere with the development of active immunity in horses and additional boosters will be required in most young animals. Historically, annual revaccination with this product has been recommended. The need for annual booster vaccination has not been established for this product. For advice on revaccination frequency, contact your veterinarian or the manufacturer.

Precautions

Store at 35°-46°F (2°-8°C). Do not freeze. Do not mix with other products. Use entire contents when first opened. Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. Field reports suggest that certain hypersensitive individuals may demonstrate local or generalized reactions, sometimes severe, following exposure to streptococcal proteins. Field studies indicate that postvaccinal exercise will appreciably decrease the incidence and duration of reactions. In case of anaphylactoid reaction, administer epinephrine. This product has not been tested in pregnant animals. In case of human exposure, contact a physician.
