SNAP Giardia Antigen Test Kit
This treatment applies to the following species:Giardia Antigen Test Kit
For veterinary use only.
SNAP* Giardia
The SNAP* Giardia Test Kit is a rapid enzyme immunoassay for the detection of Giardia antigen in canine and feline feces. The presence of this antigen in fecal samples indicates the animal has ingested Giardia cysts, may be actively infected, and may be shedding cysts in feces. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and anorexia, and infections are particularly dangerous for immuno-compromised animals.1,2,3
Precautions and warnings
● Infectious Giardia cysts may be shed in feces and remain viable for long periods. Handle all samples as if capable of transmitting infection.
● All waste should be properly decontaminated prior to disposal.
● Do not mix components from kits with different serial numbers.
● Do not use a SNAP device that has been activated prior to the addition of sample.
● Refer to country specific Material Safety Data Sheet for regional hazard identification.
Storage
● SNAP devices and test reagents are stable until their expiration dates when stored at 2-8°C.
● All components must be at room temperature (18-25°C). before running the test. This may take up to 30 minutes, depending upon the temperature in your laboratory. Do not heat.

Sample information
● Canine or feline feces can be used fresh, previously frozen, or stored at 2-8°C for up to seven days.
● Samples must be at room temperature (18-25°C) before beginning the test procedure.
● The collection swab is not intended to be used rectally.
Test procedure
1. Pull off the tube that covers the conjugate/swab device and coat the entire swab tip with a thin layer of fecal material. Replace the tube over the swab.
2. Break the plastic valve stem inside the reagent bulb by bending the assembly back-and-forth at the neck. Holding the device swab-tip-down, squeeze and release the bulb three times to pass the conjugate solution in the bulb to the swab tip.
3. Place the SNAP device on a flat surface. Remove the tube from the conjugate/swab device. Using the swab/bulb as a pipette, dispense 5 drops of the sample/conjugate solution into the sample well of the SNAP device, being careful not to splash the contents outside of the sample well.
The sample will flow across the result window, reaching the activation circle in approximately 30-60 seconds. Some sample may remain in the sample well. When the sample FIRST appears in activation circle, push the activator button firmly until it is flush with the device body.
NOTE: Some samples may not flow to the activation circle within 60 seconds and, therefore, the circle may not turn color. In this case, press the activator button after the sample has flowed across the result window.
4. Wait 8 minutes, then read the test result.
NOTE: The positive control spot color may develop sooner, but test results are not complete until 8 minutes.
Interpreting Test Results
To determine the test result, read the reaction spots in the result window and compare the color intensity of the sample spot to that of the negative control spot.
Negative Result
The result is negative for a sample spot, if:
● There is no color on the sample spot and the negative control spot.
or
● Color on the sample spot is equal to the color on the negative control spot.
Positive Result
Giardia Ag
Color on the Giardia sample spot is darker than color on the negative control spot.
NOTE: Some positive results may have only light color intensity on the sample spot.
Invalid Result
The negative control spot serves as a safeguard against false-positives. Color development on the positive control spot indicates the test reagents are functional and helps indicate that the assay has been run properly.
● If the positive control spot does not develop color, the result is invalid. Repeat the test.
● If color on the negative control spot is darker than color on the sample spot, the test is invalid. Repeat the test.
● If invalid results are obtained for a sample when repeated, contact IDEXX Customer Support.
