Drug Interaction Report
3 potential interactions and/or warnings found for the following 2 drugs:
- clarithromycin
- Nexterone (amiodarone)
Interactions between your drugs
amiodarone clarithromycin
Applies to: Nexterone (amiodarone), clarithromycin
Talk to your doctor before using amiodarone together with clarithromycin. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that is potentially life-threatening. In addition, amiodarone blood levels may be increased by medications like clarithromycin, which may lead to the development of serious side effects such as pneumonitis (inflammation of lung tissue), nerve damage, liver injury, thyroid abnormalities, and vision impairment. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or special monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with amiodarone. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food/lifestyle interactions
amiodarone food/lifestyle
Applies to: Nexterone (amiodarone)
Amiodarone may be taken with or without food but should be taken at the same way each time. You should avoid consuming grapefruits and grapefruit juice while taking amiodarone. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor. Grapefruit can raise the levels of amiodarone in your body and lead to dangerous side effects. This can affect the rhythm of your heart. Call your doctor if you have symptoms of irregular heartbeat, chest tightness, blurred vision or nausea.
