Vaccination with influenza virus vaccine, live is not recommended in children less than 18 years of age who are receiving bismuth subsalicylate therapy. The use of bismuth subsalicylate or related medications has been linked to a serious and potentially fatal condition called Reye's syndrome in children with certain viral infections such as influenza or chicken pox. Because influenza virus vaccine, live contains live (but weakened) virus, there is some concern that it can cause Reye's syndrome when used with bismuth subsalicylate. The immunizing doctor should be informed of current or recent therapy with bismuth subsalicylate so that appropriate measures and/or precautions can be taken, such as substituting influenza virus vaccine, live with a vaccine that contains inactivated virus. Never give bismuth subsalicylate to children or adolescents who have a fever without talking to a doctor, especially if they also have flu symptoms or chicken pox. It is important to tell the doctor about all other medications being used, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to the doctor.
