Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for 5 days for UTI and did not feel any relief until day 4. But from day 2, I had side effects like burning pain of the scalp with the slightest touch and dizziness with fast head movements. From day 4 on, I had a fever with chills. Then, a couple of hours after the last dose on day 5, I developed a skin rash of red dots all over my torso, arms, and face, the dots grew larger and also spread to my legs and feet by the end of the night. I had to take prednisone and antihistamine to control the rash and take another antibiotic to treat my UTI that Bactrim only partially treated."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "While I was only on Bactrim for one week, I feel like it was an experience to share! In this week, I did notice a difference in my skin, and it was probably the best my face has ever looked. That being said, I developed allergy symptoms pretty quickly but did not make the connection right away. High fever and nausea for a few days before a full-body rash on the 8th day. I was taking two pills a day. Always watch for symptoms and consult the doctor. I would still recommend this medication to others as it appeared VERY promising at clearing up my moderate hormonal acne. If I could go on it again, I would."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Took Bactrim 4 days for skin infection, then quit due to not sleeping or being able to eat. I drank plenty of water but ended up feeling like my head was going to explode, joints aching, vision blurry, felt like I was being poisoned. The doctor said to continue taking, just make sure you eat. I let them know I was not able to eat, so I quit on my own, nobody's going to know what is going on with their body better than themselves, and it was just poisoning me. Three days after stopping Bactrim, I have a rash all over my body, and a week later still feel like my head is going to explode, very tired and vision blurry. Doctors put on my file to never take again as I am allergic to it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Absolutely the worst medication I've ever been on, and I've been on a lot. If an alternative is offered, take the alternative. Intense thirst, super awful anxiety (borderline paranoia), stomachaches and heartburn out the wazoo, night sweats, rash, dizziness, joint pain, loss of appetite were my symptoms (amongst others). Doc switched me to clindamycin. Not a single side effect! Symptoms gradually got better after dropping Bactrim."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "Taken with cefadroxil twice a day for ten days. Got rid of the visible signs of the infection within one day. I experienced slight loss of appetite, but other than that, I didn't experience any side effects. However, on the last day of taking this medicine, I broke out in a rash all over my face, neck, arms, and chest. I'm hoping that it will go away because now I'm done with the medicine."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I was suffering from acne since childhood. I tried Accutane, but it didn't work for me. I tried any kind of drugs and creams prescribed by a dermatologist, but nothing works. Recently, I went to one dermatologist at a hospital-based clinic, and she prescribed me Bactrim DS. I took it for a week, and suddenly I just felt terrible. I had a severe fever and chills, and after two days, I noticed the rash all over my body. I thought it was measles. But, ouch! Tachycardia, dehydration for just a week. When I visited my dermatologist, she said it was a Bactrim allergy. The bad thing is she had to send me to the emergency room. I was so happy at first because Bactrim cleared my acne in just a week, but in the end, it’s a horrible feeling that I almost died."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Years ago, I had an allergic reaction after being prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. I had a rash all over my body, and my face was swollen. So, my advice to anyone else who has been allergic to Bactrim is never to take Trimethoprim antibiotic. Recently, it was prescribed to me. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance with a rash all over my body, prescribed Prednisone, which sent my blood sugar sky high. I am a Type 1 diabetic. Now, I have a 19 cm blood clot in my leg. BEWARE. I believe the GP, who knew I was allergic to Bactrim, should have known Bactrim includes Trimethoprim. I am not happy or confident with the TGA."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Got a nasty couple of mosquito bites that ended up streaking up my arms. Was prescribed Bactrim for the bacterial skin infection. First few days, my tummy was bad and not sleeping well. On the 7th day, I suddenly had the worst chills/shivers and low fever. By morning, my arms, legs, and torso were covered in a rash. Went to the ER and they immediately determined it was a Bactrim reaction. Said the drug is known to have nasty reactions and not sure why I was prescribed it when there are alternatives. If you have an alternative drug that is just as effective, not worth the risk."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Took four pills out of six Bactrim that I was prescribed for my UTI. It took a while before the side effects kicked in. I got a rash around my neck, down my back, and down my chest, red splotches under my tongue, a terrible sore throat, neck stiffness, skipped heartbeats, blisters on my lips, tenderness on hands and feet, which turned into tiny blisters on hands and feet, and a few others on legs, arms, and ears. Also, very thirsty. In one day, I drank 40 oz of water and never felt the need to pee. After 80 oz, I still had cotton mouth and peed only twice, had dark urine."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "This medication did work, but unfortunately, after only one week, I was one of the unlucky few who found out they were allergic. I broke out in a rash all over my body. I stopped immediately. It sucks because it was making my skin kind of glowy. But it's not worth it if you're allergic. If you're not, then it would probably be perfect."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Treated with Bactrim for MRSA. This drug ruined my life. Bactrim is a very strong drug. This is over a year now I’ve taken Bactrim, and it left me with a number of side effects up until now, a whole year later, with weight loss, stomach problems, tightness in the throat, rash, depression, lymph nodes, and other feelings I can’t describe. Please stay far away from this drug because I can’t understand how this drug is prescribed for so many different things to begin with, and it’s just making everyone worse than after they take it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "First 2 1/2 days this seemed to be working for me. 3rd day developed a major headache and nausea. By day 4, I felt a bit feverish, but nothing major. By day 5, my entire body ached and I just wanted to sleep. The fever, although not high, continued to go up and down. By day 6, I felt just as bad, no headache, but nausea, feverish, chills, etc. Day 7, enlarged lymph nodes, stopped taking it. Day 8-9, severe rash all over body. Seeing now possible signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "My teen daughter was given a 10-day course of Bactrim (and Keflex) for an infected bug bite, even though she isn’t allergic to penicillin. It seemed to work until day 6, she had a mild fever and rash. Then on day 8, her face was covered with a rash, and within half an hour of the first rash, her whole face ballooned, and her lips, throat, and nose were in pain. We rushed to the ER, and she had Benadryl in IV. It was scary, and so I wondered why the doctor prescribed it if the majority of users have had terrible experiences with it (the ER doctor immediately recognized my daughter’s allergic reaction to Bactrim, so it must have been quite a common thing!). I will make sure we will never have this again!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I took Bactrim for 5 days, which resulted in two days of chest pain and a trip to the ER. After five days, I broke out in a rash from head to toe, along with swelling of my face, lips, and throat. My mother was also allergic to sulfa medications. So, no more Bactrim for me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Took Bactrim for 2 weeks and flu-like symptoms the entire time. Eventually broke out in hives after 2 weeks and was told I was allergic. BUT my prostate swelling is down, and I feel better. So it put me through the mill, but it took care of the underlying issue. I’ve been itching for 4 days after taking my last pill. Hope to be itch-free soon."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "On day five of a 10-day course, I noticed a rash on my face. Over the next 12 hours, it would cover my entire body. It didn't itch, it burned! Doc said Benadryl wouldn't help, so I needed a steroid shot. I was also very dizzy and tired on this medication. If you have never taken Bactrim and aren't sure if you are allergic to sulfa drugs, I would just take something else."

For Acne "I'm 18, and I've had acne since I was 13. I have had various different treatments, starting with the cream Duac. Then, when I needed my prescription renewed, they said the demand was too high, so I couldn't use it anymore, but they prescribed me Epi-Duo. I was severely allergic, with rashes all over my back, face, and chest. This is when they put me on Tetrysal/Lymecycline (sorry about the spelling), and I was on that for 18 months. Then that stopped working. I went to go and see another dermatologist, where they prescribed me doxycycline, so I tried that. No luck, so they have now prescribed me this (3 tablets twice a day), and I just started them yesterday. I hope they work, as it has severely affected my self-esteem."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed this for a staph infection of the skin. The first few days, I was very fatigued and had mild neck pain. Then, on Day 7 of 10 that it was prescribed for, I started breaking out in a rash on one thigh, and then it spread throughout the day and was on my chest and arms by the night. I was also freezing! I took 2 Benadryl that night, then woke up the next morning, and the rash was all over from my neck all the way down to my ankles, front and back, and I was cold all day! I went to urgent care and ended up getting a steroid injection at urgent care, then had to take a high dose of prednisone for 3 days after that. After steroids were started, I noticed that the joint pain went away, and I also was swollen from the rash."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Bactrim cured my prostatitis within two weeks, however, I had to stop taking it earlier than prescribed because I discovered I was allergic. I noticed flu-like symptoms, including chills, fever, and horrible muscle aches. On top of that, I developed a head-to-toe rash that itched like crazy. Imagine being sore and itchy at the same time. Luckily, all of this subsided within a few days of quitting Bactrim. Since the antibiotic kills bacteria everywhere, I noticed I had flawless skin for about a week. But that didn't last. The bacteria came back with a vengeance, and I developed the worst acne of my life. I'm now taking doxycycline and using expensive creams to combat this. It's been two months since I stopped Bactrim, and I am still breaking out!"

All seem to be improving. I have only started taking the medication, though. I am hoping for the best from what others here had to say."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "I've been having some discomfort that my doctor felt could be prostatitis. So, until I could get in for a CT scan and also see a urologist, he put me on Septra DS. Everything was going fine until day 6. I was on my 23rd anniversary weekend and I got up that morning to take a nice hot bath in the hot tub in our room. When I got out of the hot tub and started to dry off, I noticed hives on my inner thighs. Looking in the mirror, I noticed that I was also covered in hives from my armpit to my waist on both sides. The culprit? Septra DS. Within the next few hours, I was covered on my back, stomach, legs, arms, and a few on my lips. Allergic reaction."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "UTI - Bactrim for 7 days. Day 1 stomach discomfort. Day 2 UTI slight urgency but manageable, that night had an anxiety attack and heart palpitations. By day 4 exhausted, hardly able to do my daily work. I called my doctor on day 5, and she said this is normal - to just power through, and since I’m allergic to penicillin, I’m likely not allergic to Sulfa. That night had chills and a 100-degree fever. Day 6 I felt even worse (chills and fever) and developed hives. Was told I have a Sulfa allergy and to stop with the meds and start Macrobid. The next day with Bactrim leaving my system I developed a full body rash that made me look sunburned and had a 103-degree fever. The rash subsided 6 days after it started, and my other symptoms ended 3 days after I stopped the pills. Overall, one of the worst medical experiences of my adult life. Macrobid seemed to work, only symptom was head fog, which may have been from Bactrim. Giving Bactrim 2 stars because it seemed to clear the UTI."
