Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I started Bactrim DS 3 days ago for an infection in my jaw. Everything seemed to be okay, but I began feeling extremely weak and achy. By the second dose on day 3, I began running a fever of 101.7. I thought maybe it was the infection. My glands in my neck were swelling, and my eyes were burning. My head felt like my brain was literally swelling. I read all of these could be a potentially serious side effect of Bactrim, so I didn't take the second dose like I was supposed to. After a couple of hours, my fever started to break without me taking anything for it. My head started feeling better. I began to drink even more water than before to flush it out, and the dangerous side effects began to go away. I know it was the Bactrim because had it been the infection, the fever wouldn't have gone down on its own without medication."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I had a UTI with an MRSA on my face. I was given the drug for both. First mistake, I went to FL and was under sun exposure, which I didn't know was dangerous. Was okay with acidophilus too. Day 8 of Bactrim, I developed vaginal bleeding but made no connection. Day 9, I stopped it. And day 10, I was blown up in hives, severe body rash, terrible chills with high fever, and a severe migraine attack. I was livid. They scared me to death. I felt I was dying. I was on Benadryl for 24 hours and started getting better. But the next day, the MRSA was back. I nearly lost it! Obviously, it was a terrible allergic reaction, but my doctor was hesitant as it occurred after day 9 as opposed to his textbooks of day 2 or 3. As of now, the bleeding has only subsided. It's 10 days since."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Sinusitis "I was diagnosed with a sinus infection and prescribed Septra. Instructions stated to take the medication for 14 days. On the 12th day, I noticed a rash on my ankle. By that evening, I was running a fever. At 3:30 am, I woke up with blood on my face - my lips had swollen so much that they had split. My eyes, feet, hands, gums, and roof of my mouth were also swollen. My temperature went to 105, and I was hospitalized. The diagnosis was that I am allergic to sulfa drugs. I was in the hospital for a week, and it took me over six weeks before I was near normal."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "Awful stuff, wretched stuff. If you suffer from anxiety and depression, this will magnify both by tenfold. Horrible palpitations of the heart, weird spiky fevers at random times, disoriented feeling while driving; it's just not a pleasant experience. Maybe I'm just allergic to sulfur or something, but I can't stress enough-stay away from this stuff. There's plenty of other antibiotics that aren't this awful. I know my doctor had good intentions when prescribing me this garbage, but I'm legitimately mad at him for putting me on this awful tripe."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I went on this medication, and within an hour, I was shaking uncontrollably, then went into cold sweats. The top of my head and the back of my neck got extremely red, and my face was also blood red. The symptoms would subside after about 5-6 hours, and I would feel better, but I would go through the same routine over again once I took another pill. On day two, the symptoms got worse. My back and joints got so sore I could barely function. Still shaking uncontrollably, along with the cold sweats. I got really dizzy and had to sit often. I was drinking a bottle of water every hour, but it still didn't help, let alone having to urinate every 30 minutes. Insomnia set in, and I couldn't sleep. On the third day, I finally called the doctor, and they prescribed me something new. Symptoms: headaches, rashes, fever, joint pain, back pain, sore throat, heavy coughing, dizziness, forgetfulness, insomnia, uncontrolled shaking, cold sweats, freezing and not able to get warm."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I've been taking this for five days and started getting flu-like symptoms, including sore throat, fever, chills, headache, nausea, lack of appetite, burning eyes when I close them, slight sensitivity to light (my computer screen). I've just read others share the same experience, so I thought it would be necessary for me to share my experience as well."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I took Bactrim 800 for a UTI, it was taking care of the infection without any complications until I took my last pill. I developed excruciating kidney pain, a fever of 101, a rash all over my body, skin hurts so bad I couldn’t touch it, and a headache. I went to the ER, and just looking at me, they thought I was septic. After tons of blood work and three days later in the hospital, they discovered I was allergic to the medication and severely allergic to sulfa. I was so sick that I thought I was going to die. The infectious disease doctor said that I should be wearing a bracelet because I am so severely allergic. This medication is extremely dangerous, please do research before taking anything with sulfa."

For Middle Ear Infections "Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim combo antibiotic is the worst medicine for an ear infection, and the doctor gave me this sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim 800 mg/160 mg to use twice a day. The first 2 days, I felt like vomiting, loss of appetite. Day 2 to 4: I felt tired, minor headache, constipation, and loss of appetite still. Day 5 to 9: this period is the worst. I got a high fever at night, hot flash, chill, shaky, killer headache, muscle pain, and my left shoulder became numb at night. My fever went from 100 deg F on day 5 to 103 deg F on day 9. I had to lay on 7 ice pads to keep the temp down. (Tylenol and Advil could not even control the fever when this drug was in.) I stopped using this med on the last day, and I felt like rebirth the next day. I visited my doctor back on the 7th day and asked for a change, but he didn't believe me. He asked me to do a COVID test, which I later did. My COVID test came back on the 10th day, and it was negative. I had no running nose, no coughing, and no sore throat during this time, so I know it wasn't a flu."

Currently on my 3rd day of taking it and I have chills, a fever, throbbing headache, back pain, and increased heart rate. I have never had side effects from any medications except this one."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This is a horrible medication for me. Everyone is different, though. I would not recommend it. I have had debilitating headaches and stomach upset since day one. Today (day 4) I had a huge anxiety attack, the worst headache ever, chills, and a low-grade fever. It made me more anxious thinking it could be COVID, but my temperature is down. My pharmacist told me to stop taking it. It helped my UTI, but the side effects are horrible!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed 800 mg twice a day for a UTI. The first 2 days I experienced nausea. But the next 3 days I had a 102 fever, night sweats, sleeplessness, nausea, muscle aches (low back, hips, jaw), and restlessness. I was tempted to go to the doctor each day, but decided to just hope it all ends once I’m finished with the antibiotic."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I have a boil or a bacterial infection on the inside of my buttocks. Immediately upon taking one pill, I had itching. That’s not the worst part, I came down with a 101 to 104 fever. I ache all over, disoriented. I haven’t eaten in three days. My urine is a dark yellow-orange. So I called the doctor, and they said it was the flu. Really, I'm done with this drug, I already missed two days of work."

For Sinusitis "For me, this medication is an absolute nightmare! After about 8 days on this med, I started feeling intense muscle cramping, fever, and chills. So I stopped taking it. To my surprise, Bactrim can have horrible side effects, which I experienced every one of them. I had a 101-degree fever, chills, skin rash, heart palpitations, aches, and pains beyond what any human should suffer for 5 days afterwards. I thought I was going to have a heart attack and that would be it for me. When my body told me to sleep, I slept. And I did a lot of sleeping because I knew that my body seriously needed the rest to try and repair itself from all of the side effects I stated. It took me 10 full days to even feel semi-normal again. If the rating system would allow, I would give this drug a negative 10 for being so destructive."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I have bad side effects from all antibiotics, which is why I ended up with a long-standing urinary tract infection. I was given Bactrim DS by my doctor. I was really afraid to take this medication, so I cut a pill in half. I also took 1/4 of a Phenergan to help with possible nausea. I was fine all day. No side effects at all until about 4 hours in. Then I developed extreme body aches, especially a stiff neck and a low-grade fever (which lasted 3 days). I didn't take another one, checked my urine with a dipstick, and it was clear. Unfortunately, the urinary tract infection came back the next day because I didn't take enough. I tried 1/4 of a pill and had the same side effects 4 hours later. No more of those for me. Going back to the doctor for something else."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS! I would not recommend this for acne. Four weeks into the treatment, I was sent to the hospital with a very bad fever, it became hard to breathe. A couple days after I came home from the hospital, my whole body felt like pins and needles on the inside and itchy on the outside! :( Most horrible thing I've been through. Honestly, Accutane was less of a pain than this. I'd take dry lips to pins and needles any day."
