For Bacterial Infection "Holy cow. So I am on my 4th UTI in 5 months, and this is the first time I have been on Bactrim, and NEVER AGAIN will I take this. The side effects are not worth it. Intense racing thoughts and anxiety within 1-2 hours of taking it. Feeling super dizzy and wobbly. Feeling like you are moving too fast/whiplash, intense depression, demotivation. One day I had chills and a slight fever. Appetite suppressed/food/water aversion. Made me sick to my stomach just to drink water. Exhausted during the day but insomnia. I gave it a 3 because it is working to get rid of my UTI, but wow, it has taken my week. I'm going to fail my finals because I was so out of my mind on this medication."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Relieved UTI symptoms fast, but after day 2 of taking pills two times a day, I woke up in the middle of the night with a killer headache! Painkillers did not help one bit to relieve the migraine. Symptoms currently are migraine, nauseous, vomiting, neck and back stiffness, fever with chills, muscle aches, diarrhea, and it hurts so bad to even move my eyes. I just may be allergic or 'sensitive' to this antibiotic, but even though my doctor said to keep taking it, I don't know if it is worth it, especially if it will continue symptoms mentioned."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was a little worried after reading the reviews, and on top of that, my mom had a really bad reaction (fever, horrible chills, etc.). I was a little queasy the first few doses, but it wasn't even enough to keep me from eating. After that, I had no side effects at all. Overall, my experience was great!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim after two other antibiotics failed to cure my UTI, and let me tell you, not only did it not work, but I also had a violent allergic reaction to it. I was suffering from my first UTI (first of many to come sadly). The symptoms went away pretty quickly after taking the first pill but came back after I stopped taking the medicine two days later. From what I remember, I got really sick: chills, high fever, nausea, complete loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, and red patches all over my body, but especially on my arms, legs, and chest. I had swollen lips as the first indication, but as I was young, I didn’t understand it at first. When I went back to the doctor, he said it was a pretty powerful medicine and that he knew beforehand that the risk of allergy was higher than with other medicines. I don’t hold it against him though, it was very frustrating not to find anything that would work to cure this UTI."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Day 1. Just took one pill in the evening, and after 1-2 hours, I had a high fever, big headaches like someone hit me with a bat. Loss of appetite. Day 2. Morning, I got really tired, and headaches got better. Took the second pill in the evening. The big headaches came back and I felt dizzy. Tried to sleep as much as possible. Day 3, woke up still with headaches and nausea. Skin on my hand is peeling and developed diarrhea. I won't continue the medicine due to too many side effects. Much more, I don't even remember."

For Urinary Tract Infection "How long do the side effects from sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim last? Answer to the BIG question, when will it be over? For me it was 4 weeks, the last week with just minor hip discomfort. Part of the frightening aspect of the severe side effects from sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim reactions is wondering if you're stuck with this pain for life. I read a lot of reviews and not one said how long it was. I don't see my review here, but the issues I had included hip and low back pain and inflammation making it hard to walk and painful to sit. Also, the day after stopping (only 3 pills over 2 days), I had nerve pain shooting up from the hip, fever, stiff jaw, lung or bronchial inflammation, and more."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "57-year-old female. Feeling fine. Went to my annual physical. Urine sample showed high white blood count. (Sign of a UTI, never had one and had no symptoms. Dr. prescribed Bactrim DS for 7 days anyway. (After my symptoms began, I researched my high WBC in urine could be due to the start of menopause - no need for antibiotics there!!) I am a non-drinking vegan who drinks 32 oz of water per day. I initially had a little stomach gas, but on day 5 I had severe leg cramps, fatigue, headache, and a fever!! I stopped taking. Fever is gone. Headache comes and goes, but the leg cramps are still here on day 3 after stopping Bactrim! Is my liver damaged? This is a sign of cirrhosis! When will it stop?"

For Bacterial Infection "I had hip surgery back in February from which I developed an infection. I have had two infection cleanouts and just finished six weeks of IV antibiotics. My doctor switched me to Bactrim, and I felt like trash. I got some bad nausea, a migraine, fever, chills, and muscle aches so bad that I thought I had the flu. The Bactrim makes me vomit as well. This was only on day one, not trying to take it. Hopefully, the doctor can switch it for me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I got my UTI early. When I first took the medicine, I got a light headache, but I didn't think anything of it. After taking the second pill, my whole body started aching, hot flashes, fever, everything. It was so bad that I wasn't able to take care of my child. My husband tried to help, but there was nothing he could do. I stayed up until 4 a.m. because of the tossing and turning to get comfortable. This medicine needs to go."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "My son was prescribed this drug after being hospitalized for an eczema infection. Then, 7 days later, he is covered in pin-dotted rash and high fever due to Bactrim. The doctor told me to give him Benadryl every 4 hours for now. He can't sleep at night, I'm worried his rash will get worse and he will stop breathing. The doctor says to rush him to the ER if symptoms get worse. This drug should not be given to a 9-year-old."

For Bacterial Infection "This is the most horrible I have ever felt from an antibiotic. Should be taken off the market. I was given it for a cat scratch by an ER doctor, and I was extremely nauseated, sweating, weak, and feverish! Went back five days later to my family doctor, at which time he told me the cat scratch was not infected, took me off this medication. He advised keeping it clean and using antibiotic ointment. What’s even worse, I found after researching that it only has a 58% success rate for my particular treatment, and other antibiotics I have taken before with no problem are recommended-(Cipro & Z Pak)-"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for a possible UTI, and it seemed to relieve my symptoms after a few days. However, on day 7 out of 10, I started noticing red dots all over my skin. Over the period of the next day or so, the dots multiplied until it was a complete red rash all over my body. Not very itchy, but definitely unpleasant to look at. I also developed a low-grade fever of 100.6 and got headaches and felt very out of it. Went to the doctor and was told to stop taking the Bactrim because I was having an allergic reaction. Rash and other side effects went away within a few days. Looking back, there were probably other symptoms I should have noticed that pointed to me being allergic, but I didn’t think anything of them. Most people will have different experiences on this medication, so don’t start reading reviews and assume the worst. Talk to your doctor. I will say the Bactrim did seem to do its job, though, and I no longer have the UTI I was originally prescribed it for."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Absolutely horrible. DO NOT TAKE! I took one pill, and hours later, got a fever that wouldn’t go away all night, chills, and couldn’t stop shaking. I felt like I was going to die. I don’t know what they put in this, but it’s toxic."

For Urinary Tract Infection "The medicine is absolutely horrible! After the first two hours of having only one pill in my system, my whole body hurts, I have a headache. I'm running a fever, I can't even walk. My legs and arms are numb and tingling and are in so much pain. I do not recommend at all! It's worse than my UTI."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Day 1, first pill... Insomnia. It’s now 3:30 a.m., and I maybe got 2 hours of sleep. First, I woke up with a fever of 100.0. That’s when the panic set in - extreme anxiety and constant feeling of twirling. Still drinking lots of water, but I want to stop taking this."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed this medication for a post-op infection. Within 12 hours of starting the medication, I developed a fever and rash. I continued taking the medication for 4 more days, as I did not realize it was an allergic reaction. Within the next 4 days, I developed a severe headache, vomiting, my fingers went numb, severe eye redness, severe weakness to the point I had trouble walking, and decreased urination. My doctor immediately took me off the medication and had blood work done. My liver enzymes were sky-high. The symptoms stopped as soon as the medication was discontinued, but it took about 6 months to get feeling back in my fingers."

For Kidney Infections "I was prescribed this antibiotic twice a day for 7 days because of an aching kidney infection I’ve experienced for a week. And by day 2, I could barely hold down food without the urge to vomit, and I was already experiencing an eating disorder before then. I also had chills, a low fever, with anxiety that nearly gave me panic attacks. My feet and legs were cold and numb, and I was sweating profusely. Then I started having trouble breathing because of chest pain, it caused me to which I found out was heartburn with shortness of breath. I stopped by day 4 since I was experiencing these awful symptoms, along with the fact that my kidney felt better anyway."

For Urinary Tract Infection "One of the worst antibiotics that I have been prescribed to treat my UTI. I am prone to UTIs and have had many antibiotics that have helped me immediately, and this one is the worst. It is day four, and some relief regarding the stinging while urinating, but I still feel major discomfort with the bladder and vagina. I have had migraines for three days now, my neck is tense and heavy, fever, body aches, and chills. Chest cold and hard time breathing, and very itchy! I was told to drink lots of water and keep hydrated, but I can’t. I have no appetite whatsoever and do not feel the urge to drink any fluids. Do not recommend anyone taking this for a UTI. You’ll feel worse."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Started Bactrim 800 mg DS on a Wednesday. Thursday afternoon had a 103 fever. Fever would reduce with NSAIDs. Fever has been present every day since. The major side effects I experienced were fever, chills, body aches, cough, loss of appetite, feeling dehydrated, severe fatigue, and change in urine volume. I thought maybe I had COVID, got a test. (No COVID.) Original UTI symptoms (kidney area pain) were gone by day 3. I’m on the last day of the script, and I will NOT take this again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I am not loving this medicine at all. So thankful I found this page, though. I am currently at the end of day 4 of taking this for a UTI. I am feeling flushed, feverish, weak, dizzy, bloated, and the anxiety is overwhelming. I guess it took care of my UTI, but I am feeling way worse in other ways, freaking out. Now that I know others have felt similar negative symptoms, I am hoping I can now calm enough to get some sleep since I haven’t had much of it lately. Definitely calling my doctor tomorrow to see if I need to try something else."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Been on Bactrim before, and it worked, but had been on a daily low dose antibiotic since Keflex 11/17. Then, 3 weeks ago, another UTI, so was put on Cipro after culture, last dose Friday. Urine still cloudy with a foul odor. Sick Saturday. Yesterday, went to the ER as had a migraine, nausea, and fever. They did a computed tomography of kidneys, ureters, and bladder (CT KUB) scan and sent me home on 3 weeks of this antibiotic. In pain today with fever, so took Tylenol. I am alone and don't know what to do. My doctor's office may be closed as I can’t figure out what’s going on with their phone lines."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This medicine is absolutely awful. I am on a 7-day dose, and the first 3 days were okay for the most part (maybe because I was also prescribed a medicine similar to Azo), however, yesterday was day 4, and I had no appetite and felt very nauseous. Now I’m on day 5 and still have no appetite, still a little nauseous, but now accompanied with a fever of 101.7. I had to leave work and am now bedridden on New Year’s Eve. The only reason I gave it any stars at all is because it seems to be clearing the infection, and it’s actually helped with my headaches. But I’ll take a headache over this. If you can, get a different antibiotic because this stuff is awful."

For Bacterial Infection "Using this drug was like living in a nightmare. It still remains to be seen whether it helped my prostatitis; I was given a 28-day course of 56 pills at a combined 960 mg tablet. But while using it, I had many profound negative side effects: extreme anxiety, racing thoughts, and pounding heart that did not respond to various self-soothing techniques such as meditation, breathing, or even a cold shower; insomnia to the point I didn't sleep but a few minutes a night for my last three days on the drug; various flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue, chills and hot flashes, weakness, and cognitive ability loss; and an out-of-body feeling. I stopped taking it after eight pills when I noticed the symptoms always ramped up 15-30 minutes after taking a dose. Before that, I didn't connect these insane symptoms to my new medication, but I probably should have because I had a similar reaction to another antibiotic, levofloxacin, a couple of years ago. Be very wary of this drug!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Bactrim was prescribed to my 3-year-old for a boil. Although the boil went away after 4 doses, she got a super high fever and complained of a headache and was very lethargic. I called her doctor, and he directed me to continue the medication for a few more days to complete a 7-day regimen. Eventually, she broke out in hives, head to toe, and I rushed her to the emergency room. Allergic reaction to sulfa drugs."
