For Alzheimer's Disease "Started this about 5 weeks ago and take 10 mg 2x daily. Using it with 100 mg Luvox and 450 mg Wellbutrin for OCD. Not too many side effects to date. Work up to the maintenance dose. The Luvox is a different story. Had to go back on Wellbutrin to stay awake. Also using low dose Naltrexone daily. Years of benzos, alcohol, and Ambien took its toll on my memory."

"1. I was first prescribed donepezil, for which I had many side effects... mainly severe diarrhea. 2. Donepezil also gave me several of the numerous side effects listed on drugs.com. 3. Donepezil also was extremely slow in effectiveness for me. 4. I was switched to memantine, which was much more readily effective with no side effects. 5. Government doctors, i.e., military, etc., do not prescribe memantine because it is more costly than donepezil. ● Disclosure: 1. My daughter is a military neurologist. 2. Military must get special authorization for memantine due to the additional cost of the medication."

For Alzheimer's Disease "I am 61 and in the early stage of Alzheimer's. I was having problems with forgetting where I was driving to, repeating questions, and sometimes forgetting names. I take 5 mg a day of memantine. My family and I have noticed a big difference in my memory as I am not repeating myself as often and not having problems with names and driving. I have not had any side effects."

"I love memantine. I have suffered severe memory loss for the last year or 2 now since I started having seizures. I would do things like my grandpa when he had Alzheimer's. I would like to get tested for that in the future. I used to not be able to finish tasks, understand people, walk into the men's bathroom, wear 2 wrong shoes, I've mixed up the gas and brake pedal while driving, I forget what I'm doing, people's names, where I am sometimes, etc. Memantine has helped tremendously with my memory. I still get confused, but it has helped so much. I am so thankful for this medication. I have not noticed any negative side effects. My doctor also prescribed this for my social anxiety since it is used off-label for that. Memantine does help with my social anxiety. I don't like talking to people I don't know. Even calling the doctor's office gives me severe anxiety. So do crowds of people and going to Costco by myself. This helps. What normally would give me a panic attack isn't as bad now."

For Alzheimer's Disease "Wife has moderate Alzheimer's and has been taking memantine for 8 months. As most people who live with Alzheimer's or care for someone who has this wicked disease know, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of specific medications. I believe memantine helps because she is less likely to become depressed now and seems to be more alert."

Memantine "My husband is taking Namenda for aphasia. 5 mg. The first night of 5mg made him feel sick. Reduced to 1/2 pill for the first week, then full dose for the past two weeks. The words seem to be coming easier to find. Headache or dizziness last two days. Will watch this, not ready to stop yet. Still hopeful that it will help him find the words to speak."

"I began taking memantine about two months ago for skin picking. I was having a very difficult time not picking my thumbs until they bled. I began to do the same thing to any bump, imperfection, or scab, bug bite, scrape, cut… you name it, and I was unable to leave it alone. I started at half of a 5 mg tablet, so 2.5 mg, and stayed at that level for two weeks; at that point, I upped my dosage to 5 mg. I want to say here that any dosage, any changes in dosage, were all with my doctor’s knowledge and approval. Over the next month or so, I did not see much change in my desire to pick, though my doctor was clear that it could take up to 6 weeks before I could expect to notice any improvement. During this time, I was quite often feeling woozy and dizzy. We were in the midst of a state-to-state move, and I asked to discontinue the medication until I felt more settled in our new home; the doctor agreed. I have now restarted the medication at 5 mg. I will look forward to reporting back with any progress or changes."

"Wish that you could come up with a disintegrating form of this medication, like your donepezil. My daughter has dementia and would be so easy to give under the tongue at regular times, as you know dementia patients' sleep cycles are not always the same. This way, the patient could keep on a cycle that is consistent. If you can do it with donepezil, I am sure you can do it for memantine."

"Early in mild cognitive impairment, family GP doctor prescribed low dose (over 12 years ago) memantine for elderly spouse with donepezil RX added a few months later. Now in hospice care, discontinued memantine last week. Within 24 hours, his constant intrusive runny drippy nose, post-nasal drip, and sleep breathing difficulties dried up and disappeared. He is sleeping better, slight improvement in appetite (his weight loss is primary concern), and he is much more comfortable overall. It has only been 5 days off of memantine. Nobody suggested this as a possible cause of his respiratory issues. Imagine having a droopy nose constantly for over a decade?!. This seems so petty, but the everyday drag without anyone even suggesting a change or even to discontinue - it is upsetting all that time is lost. This side effect needs to be better addressed, not an aside with underplaying its significance. I'm so disappointed that only because his RX ran out and hospice would not refill it."

For Alzheimer's Disease "The drug memantine appears to slowly reverse or control the conditions of forgetfulness as well as some despair. It helped me to perform adequately in all cognitive matters. It, however, should not be taken while using alcohol, as it tends to cause dreams or hallucinations while sleeping. A serious side effect is low back pain, which caused me to seek medical attention related to back pain and arthritis. Overall, it was hoped that this medication would restore me to PR diagnosed onset of dementia. The drug was well tolerated with or without food."

Memantine "I am taking 5 mg two times per day for dementia. The medicine makes me tired. I take it after lunch and nap and before bedtime to help me sleep. By day two, I feel that my head is clearer, my memory a bit better, and my parking is greatly improved. I can now continue to drive."

For Migraine "They need to add difficulty speaking and slurring your words. When I first took memantine, it really freaked me out, with dizziness, difficulty speaking, instability (walking), and confusion. The side effects eventually subsided. Now I’ve been on it for 11 months. The first six months were a game changer, now its effectiveness has begun to wane. I’m going to talk with my doc about medications for severe headaches/chronic pain and memory loss that are not psychotropics."
