How do you administer Narcan Nasal Spray?

Official Answer by 9 Mar 2016

Narcan (generic name: naloxone) Nasal Spray is used to treat a narcotic (opioid) overdose in adults in an emergency situation. This medicine should not be used in place of emergency medical care for an overdose.

To administer, give one (1) spray intranasally (in the nose) into one (1) nostril. If the desired response is not achieved after 2 or 3 minutes, give a second dose intranasally into the other nostril. Additional doses may be administered every 2 to 3 minutes in alternating nostrils until emergency personnel arrives.

Naloxone blocks or reverses the effects of an opioid (narcotic) medication, including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness.
