Hello all. My doctor put me on Trintellix 10 mg about 3 weeks ago for my anxiety and depression. I had been doing well on it until a couple of days ago when I started itching all over. It is driving me up the wall! The itch is extreme and it is all over. I have an appointment with her this Thursday, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this? And how long does it last?
Thanks
How do you stop itching from trintellix?

Yes! I started 5mg for one week, 10 mg the second week and I started 20mg the third week. I started severely itching on the bottom of my hands and within hours my feet. This started at the end of week 2 so I was still on 10 mg. I think it was helping my depression but I couldn't stand the horrible itching which was starting to spread to other parts of my body. My Dr gave me samples to try before he ordered them thru my mail in scrip company because they are expensive! He recommended if Trintellix didn't work out, he would up my Wellbutrin. I don't know if I could stand the itching another week and because I need a sleeping aid to sleep, I don't want to take anything else to make me drowsy. I'm going to try the Wellbutrin and I will post my results in two weeks. The Wellbutrin is a generic so it's very affordable. I hope you find relief and figure out what works for you. I've tried so many antidepressants.
Well, my Dr said I could take 450mg of Wellbutrin but there's no way I can handle that. It makes me feel like I'm on speed for a little while and then I have no patience and feel grumpy. I feel like there's just no hope of me finding help. I've been on so many. I may just try one 150mg of Wellbutrin. I haven't taken 450mg as the 300mg is bad enough. I hate to pay that much for Trintellix just to itch all the time.
I know this is an old question but I would like to share my experience to help others. At about 2.5 weeks on trintellix I started itching ferociously. It was there all day but got worse in the evenings. I scratched so hard I couldn’t stop and ended up with bruises and open sores. I paid out of pocket for it so I didn’t want to give up yet. I decreased the dose a little and then increased the dose more slowly. It really helped with the itching. It was gone at 4 weeks.
Also wanted to add that I went out and bought hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl cream- I showered in cooler water- heat (sauna) made the itching worse. Then put the creams all over. I also rubbed IcyHot on my legs- it helped the itching a bit. Scratching just made it worse- a doctor told me to lightly slap or pinch yourself to stop an itch- it causes less damage than scratching.
Was on it for 3 weeks, I had to discontinue use due to insane itching on my legs around the knee area towards the groin. Been 3 days still itchy af! I take hydroxyzine but 50mg knocks me out so I know that's not enough to stop the itch. This drug and lamictal cause rash... they say 1 to 5% for Lamictal but it sounds like it's higher... relatively newer medication..
I have been taking Trintellix for one and a half weeks and I am itching all over. I started on 10 mg for one week and increased to 20 mg. At first I thought it was the cold weather that was affecting my skin. My legs also feel slightly warm. My mood is noticeably better, but the itching is driving me crazy. Past trial of Wellbutrin made me angry. I plan to continue with Trintellix.
I was on 5 mg of T and the severe itching started immediately! The palms of my hands, the soles of my feet, my head, my arm pits... it was HORRIBLE. I endured it for 2 weeks, hoping it would subside... it only got worse! Why does it causing itching???
I had to switch meds.
I recently started this medication. 5mg. On day 6 I started itching on my neck. Day 7 I woke up with swollen eyes and covered in itchy hives. Day 8 I called the doc and they advised I stop taking the medication and take beendryl. The next day I was still covered in itchy hives. I have never had any allergies or reactions before so this was a little freaky. I went to urgent care since it was still happening 3 days after i stopped taking the meds. The doc there said it has a 66 hour half life so it would take about 16 days to be completely out of my system!! They put me on tapered dose of prednisone to suppress the itching. It worked for the first 5 days and I woke up today with swollen eyes and covered in hives yet again. I’m hoping in a few more days it will be completely out of my system. Reading these posts actually makes me feel better that it’s not just me. Did you all have hives too??? Or just itchy skin?
I have been on T for 2 weeks now. 20mg. The itching started immediately. My feet, then all over- especially before bed. It was so incredibly intense, I was using a bristle brush to scratch. It subsided, and presently, it has almost stopped. My question is, why does this medication make us itch?
I am so glad I checked here. I just started T last week with 5 mg and the itchiness started yesterday. I thought perhaps bleach because I was wearing white sport Sox after wearing sandals for days. So relieved actually to see it's what other people are experiencing too. I have doctor appt tommorow so will be sure to discuss. I actually woke up and ran to the mirror looking for hives since I was so itchy overnight. No hives btw, just itchiness.
I had the same problem. I felt like bugs were under my skin and i itched so much i had sores all over. It never stopped so i stopped taking it.
I have been taking Trintellix now for over a month. Started out on just 10 mg, now I am on 20 mg and the itching has been overwhelming. I thought I was having an allergic reaction to something, like fabric softener or detergent, but now that I have researched the side effects, I see now that it is the medication. I took Benadryl, and it helped ease the itching, but it of course ended up coming back. I also have been using eczema itching lotion to soothe my skin. It really makes me mad, because this has really helped me for both anxiety and depression. Hope this helps anyone else that has taken Trintellix!
Wow I've been itching for the past hour and I figure it's my trintellix because today I took 20mg instead of 10mg because I've been really depressed the past couple days.. yes I know it's bad to take more than the Dr prescribes but anyway I hope it goes away, if not I'll try some hydroxyzine
Generalized rash and itching (pruritus) is a common side effect of Trintellex, but side effects generally appear with hours or days of starting the medication. If it's occuring only after weeks I'd recommend consulting with your doctor to rule out any other underlying cause.
I've been on 10 ml myself for 6 weeks. I'm going to urgent care thisorning as I can't take the itching. It's only my arms but it's so severe itching that I've bruised my as from it. Not sure what it's from but started the Trintellix about the same time.
I too started itching a couple weeks after starting trintellix. I hope it subsides because this is the most effective med I have had for my mood after at least 10 years of treatment with different meds. My husband says I am a new person. My shakiness also subsided that must have been associated with use of zoloft.
Yes! It's horrible and I'm taking atarax and it's not helping, did it ever go away for you???
I have to take a Large dose (150 mg) Atarax (Hydroxyzine) at night for it to work. I get tablets that are 50 mg each, not the 10mg tabs. It will make you sleepy, so you have to taper up to the dose. If taking 12 hours before driving, I am not sleepy. The half-life is such that the therapeutic effects get me through the day without itching until the next evening. The large dose worked pretty much immediately. I was taking 30 mg and that was NOT working. I have been on the large dose for 2 years with no problems. Medication guidelines show that large doses are used for Pruitus (itching), so this is not abnormal or unusual.
I had the intense itching as well . I waited a couple weeks and it did not subside. But the med worked so well, so I also take an antihistamine called hydroxyzine. I take 150 mg at night. This keeps me itch free for 24 hours. Because of the drowsy side effects of the hydroxyzine, I take Vyvanse 30 mg in the morning to counteract this. Yes, it is weird that I take two meds to combat side effects, but I don't mind. I have had treatment resistant depression for years and this has been the best treatment and has worked great for over two years. I also believe the Vyvanse is helping my depression. I have what is called atypical depression which means I will sleep for hours instead of waking up with insomnia. I think the Vyvanse helps me get out of bed and want to do something. The Trintellix helps my mood. By the way, the Hydroxyzine is a different category of antihistamine than what you get over the counter. You'll need a prescription for it. The first time I took it, it was sooo good to be free of the itching!

I am still taking the Hydroxyzine for itching. The Trintellix, however, has worked better than any other medication for my depression and I have been on many (Celexa, Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq, Viibryd, I am probably forgetting something!). I also combine the 15 mg Trintellix with 150 mg Wellbutrin. Because Trintellix does not have a 15 mg pill, and they are difficult to cut evenly, I had my doctor prescribe 5 mg tablets take three times per day and the pharmacy will fill at the same price as 10 mg or 20 mg once a day. I take all three in the morning, but this way I get an even dose. The jump from 10 mg to 20 mg is too much for me.
I began Trintellix 3 weeks ago and the itching began about a week ago and it is driving me crazy! Literally every spot on my skin is itchy, but this medication is working so well for me, I don't want to give up on it because of this side effect. There is nothing over the counter that will work for this kind of itching? Just trying to save time and money but if I have to see the doc I will, all I know is that this itching needs to stop! Lol
If you have tried over-the-counter and it hasn’t worked, I would recommend Hydroxyzine. The 10mg pills will not do anything. You really need to get the 50 mg pills. Then try one 50 mg and if that doesn’t work two 50 mg. You might have to experiment with the timing. What worked for me is 150 mg at night at least eight hours before you need to drive. For me, that dose lasts through the night and the work day. You may start at 50 but need to increase the dose, so that is why getting the 50 mg tablets is best. I have now been at the same dose of Hydroxyzine and Trintellix for three years with no itching and no depression. I know the itching is still there because I have missed a dose of the hydroxyzine. But, I am so pleased with the Trintellix that I will take the Hydroxyzine so that I can stay on it.
