I have a hard time with stomach issues when on SSRI's and SNRI's. Have had to stop meds months after being on them due to nausea, weight loss and bad side effects. I am confused about why the psych doc prescribed this, as it has a high incidence of causing nausea. Has anyone tried it and gotten over the nausea. I have samples to start 5 mg once a day. He also told me to stop the Wellbutrin (generic) 150 mg SR 1 x day cold turkey, wait 3 days and start the Trintellix. I am beyond apprehensive about all of this because I cannot afford the weight loss righ now. My anxiety has been out of control for over a year along with depression. It is wearing me down mentally and physically.
Any suggestion and or advise would be welcomed. Thank you
Has anyone tried Trintellix or have an opinion on it?

I turned out allergic to it to the point I was cutting myself when I was scratching so hard. Don't endure it, please... stop taking it if you do get itching immediately.
I feel like that was irresponsible of your doctor to tell you to quit your meds cold turkey. It can be hell for some people and I hope you’re doing alright with that.
I did have nausea for the first couple of weeks, though it tapered down and now I don’t have nausea at all. With me, this has curbed my appetite and I have lost a few pounds, which I was happy with because I tended to emotionally eat. It does make me have to go to the bathroom way more frequently but not diarrhea like other people have experience. This has been a good thing, makes me feel better and attributed to weight loss. I did notice that this was too strong on my period, so I may take a break that week and see if I feel better during that time. I would take my meds and get horrible hot flashes and tired.
I have tried different antidepressants but this one is different. I feel uplifted, motivated and more involved in things going on around me.
I've been on Trintellix for a little over a year and a half now and it's been great. I was originally put on lexapro for depression and anxiety. It worked for about 6mo and then stopped even with dosage increases. I'm on 20 mg and it's completely resolved the depression issues. I don't know that it's as helpful with the anxiety as the lexapro was but it's definitely improved from not being on anything and it definitely hasn't increased it at all. The only downside is the price, however I've been able to get a discount coupon from their website or my doctor for the last two years that drops it to $10 / month. It's definitely worth a try if others aren't working. I had some minor nausea when I first started it and occasionally if I take it on an empty stomach with other medications, but nothing that even comes close to outweighing the benefits I've seen.
Trintellix is a cutting edge 2014 anti-depressant that hits all three important receptors including others. In 2019, the FDA cleared it for "cognitive clarity" and improvement of libido compared to other SSRI's. The problem is that Trintellix is made in Denmark (but, available worldwide) and the manufacturer does not market the drug aggressively. Thus, Dr.'s have no monetary incentive to prescribe it. Additionally, most Dr.'s haven't read the clinical trials which show how different Trintellix is from the older meds like Zoloft, Pristiq, Effexor, Lexapro, Cymbalta, etc. Trintellix hits receptors for serotonin, noreprenephine and dopamine. It's the first anti-depressant to do this. So, instead of taking just an SSRI or SSNI - Trintellix is the first to cover all the major receptors (and can eliminate taking an SSRI + Wellbutrin).
Many Dr.'s have obviously been paid by US Pharma to denigrade this fantastic med - and that's because it's so far superior/advanced compared to older anti-depressants. It has REAL potential to take a huge chunk out of the billion dollar US Pharma anti-depressant market which is controlled by Pfizer, Merck, Wyeth, etc. and all the generic drug maufacturers who produce sub-standard (only 80% effective) older meds. Trintellix at 20mg. can be a wonder drug! So, for $295 per month - it's worth it. This is the drug I was waiting for 30 years after trying a dozen others. However, remember - max. results are at 20mg.
Thanks for this, any insight to this vs. Wellbutrin?
I've tried many without success. My Dr put me on 5mg of T for a week. The 2nd week 10mg and before I got to week 3, I started itching so bad on the bottom of my hands and feet, I couldn't sleep! I've read I has had that effect on lots of people. I did not get sick one time. I wish I could've given it a try... I hate depression and anxiety.
Bob
How’s your experience on Trintellix? Are you still taking it ?
Thanks
I have been on 5mg for about 3 months now. My doc hasn't raised the dose because I am really med sensitive and 5mg was "working".
Sigh. I had high hopes for this after having so many issues with meds. Is it working? Mainly I feel "neutral". Not happy, not sad, not really anything. No motivation, some days I just can't be bothered to do anything.
Luckily, it seems to be pretty weight neutral so far. However, I am noticing a twitch under my eye, which is probably Tardive's Dyskinesia, and I get a handful of hair everytime I brush it.
I have to talk to my doc next week, probably going to have to switch meds again.
As for the nausea-- in the first week, I actually vomited twice. I learned to take it on an empty stomach with just my coffee in the morning and wait an hour or so to eat breakfast. Still queasy on occasion, but mostly resolved.
I’m on this too.(Over a year now) No one has mentioned just to ask their doctor to prescribe them a zofran. ( for nausea) That’s what I do. Just take one with it in the morning and you will not have any nausea. The doctor told me this was the #1 side affect when she prescribed it to me. Hope this helps.
Hi Janie,
I just started my second fully month of Trintellix. I started on the 10mg and 100% experienced the reported nausea - and the diarrhea and gas!! Such a great feeling. But that cleared up within 7 days. Then two weeks ago when I was bumped up to the 20mg, the same thing happened - nausea, diarrhea, gas, but after a full 7 days it died down. I'm having anxiety more than usual lately, but it could be a combination of coming off of Effexor as well as a possible new med? Trintellix has certainly helped - even within a few days of starting it - and I'm not in the deep deep depression I was when I started it. Hope it works for you.
Everybody is different, but I've taken over 40 meds and this is the only one that I could not stay on due to side effect--nausea would not end so I had to stop.
I have just stated this drug. I have been on almost every one including the other ones mentioned. I have had nausea every morning.I have a size effect that I have found noone else who has had it. Other meds have caused low sex drive. This one has the opposite effect. It is crazy.
I was on 20MG of Lexapro. Lexapro was great for my depression/anxiety symptoms but my short-term memory went to heck. I referred to the med as “Forget-a-pro”. My Dr. took me down to 5mg and it just didn’t cut it for me. Memory still bad and the anxiety/depression crept back in. He suggested I try Trintellix. He prescribed 5mg for the first week and moved to 10mg. As others have said the nausea on day 1 hit me after an hour and stuck around for about 2 hours. I am 3 weeks in, and still have some nausea. I have an iron stomach and have NEVER been nauseous and vomited for the first time in over 25 years. I hope this side effect tapers off, because this med WORKS. Cognitively I noticed a difference in week 2. Mentally sharper, more engaged conversationally and not so dang drowsy every afternoon. From time to time I’ll have these bouts of euphoria, hard to explain but a really cool feeling when they happen. I’m sticking with it for now.
I have been taking Trintellix for almost a month now and have experienced the nausea related to it. I have discovered that if I take it on an empty stomach accompanied by my one daily cup of coffee and wait at least an hour before eating, it helps with the nausea. If you're not a coffee drinker there's a possibility that any warm beverage such as tea might help you. Good luck
Hi Janie - I am taking Trintellix and starting my 4th week. I began at 5mg, then 10mg while tapering off of Pristiq, and have been on 20 mg now for 5 days. I did experience nausea when starting both the 10 mg doses but it went away after a few days. I haven't had nausea with the 20 mg so far. I also experienced some light headedness initially but it also has gone away. There has been no weight loss or weight gain so far either. It is helping with mood and energy a little. Hope this helps.
Sapphire
Sapphire, you are giving me hope! Been on Trintellix for 5 days and the nausea, hot flashes have started. For the first 3 days I feel amazing, improved depression and anxiety. I am going to tough it out in the hopes it will work without the side effects soon.
I tried this drug for about 4 weeks. All it did was give me bad anxiety. I told my doctor the first week of taking it that I was having bad anxiety ( don't normally suffer from it) but he kept me on it for four weeks and then I couldn't stand it any more so went off it. I did cause me mild nausea but that side effect was overridden by the anxiety.
HI kennedy-
I am already having anxiety 24/7 do not want or need that. You are not the first one from what I have read to have the anxiety or some other intolerable side effect come on later with Trintellix. I am going to pass on trying it, not worth the risk. Back to the drawing board.
I appreciate that you took the time to answer my post, thank you.
I would rather deal with the anxiety than depression. I’m on 5 mg and depression is lifting I think. It’s just been a wk I’ve been on it and no nausea. A little more gas than usual.
I so agree with Sally, I rather deal with depression than anxiety. I suffer from depression/anxiety for 8 years. Anxiety is almost gone, but the stubborn depression is still my shadow that I hate it so much I want to scream loudly. The last combo for me was/is elavil and lithium as an augmentation therapy. My depression got better but not much better. I have put 40 pounds in 4 months. I don’t really care about putting weight as long as I can be depression free. But, it looks like lithium didn’t help enough. I’m sooooo hopeless. I have two children that keep me alive. My doctor suggested Trintellix since I have tried most of everything. I’m so devastated to switch again. It has been three years non stop pain. I hate this illness. And I don’t believe in God, otherwise why should we suffer on an everyday basis. Why he gave me two children while I can’t enjoy them. It’s the worst can happen to everyone but especially to mothers with little kids.
Janiebme; I would not worry about just stopping the Wellbutrin SR most that do with your dose really don't have many problems at all. Then many that I have heard from on the Trihelix mostly nausea Yes I know but many have said that after 5 days or so they get rid of that feeling but you have to stay on the 5 mg a bit longer than others do. Because of the jump to the 10, the Nausea just would not go away. I know you have had a lot of problems with the others but I think it's worth the try. And so far really have not heard of that many losing weight or the side effects you were worried about and for sure no more than what the Wellbutrin does. I would say if it was me I would start if. And keep close tabs with the doctor and even let the doctor know that you read in some post that some people that have had problems with stomach or nausea stayed on the 5mg longer and did ger relief so the doctor does not bump you up too fast.
being you have had this problem so much sorry I can't be of much more help. but as you know we all react differently with these type medications.
Hi Chuck-
Yes, I have had my share of bad side effects for months with different meds, it sucks! The weight loss would be from the nausea. My psych doc said all his patient that have been on it had nausea. I cannot afford to loose even a couple of pounds. I am underweight as it is. The Wellbutrin has increased my anxiety, which inturn is creating more depression... the vicious cycle. Good part is that I am not in that deep dark hole, but just hanging on the edge of it. I have not given up yet, something as to work sooner or later.
Thank you so much for your concern and input it helps.
Janie; Please just don't give up you know as well as I do it's a matter of hitting the right combo, but God it feels so long between the waiting period of the SSRI and SNRI. I am here for you anytime dear Yes this is true even the people that are on the TRINEX<<<<< don't get away without Nausea like you really need that. I am so sorry you're having to hang on the rim I have been there too many times dear and it really makes us think but we have to push on. They have to be able to come up with something even better where we don't have to wait for 6 to 8 weeks to find out if a med is going to work. I am serious if you need me for anything I am here for you I know how upsetting it gets been on the rim too many times. Thanks for letting me know Janie. chuck
Hi Chuck-
I sent you a private message. Please check you private messages, thank you.
I felt some nausea when I first started it, I try to put a little on my stomach before I take it. It’s gotten better doing that.
Hi, I tried Trintellix a couple years ago 5mg, then 10mg, for four weeks. I never had nausea or weight loss. But I stopped taking it do to pounding heart, and increased anxiety.
Of course not everyone has this problem. It may work great for you. These meds are always a shot in the dark aren't they? It gets frustrating finding one that suits you. I've been on Celexa 10mg, for over a year now and it seems to work fine for me. Plus I take ativan if anxiety gets out of hand.
I hope Trintellix works for you, I'll keep my fingers crossed. :) xx
Hi sun-
I read and heard about many side effects from this med. It seems the issues can start weeks after taking it also. I think there was a reason they repackaged it from Brintellix to Trintellix. I am not willing to experiment with another med at this point. I was thinking of asking for a low dose of Celexa to add to my Wellbutrin.
New psych doc it against benzos and will not prescribe them. I have had them before and was able to use them as prescribed and come off of them with no problem. It is a shame that we all pay for the ones that abuse benzos and the doctors that do not warn their patients of the potential tolerance and addiction. They were a life saver when I did use them. I think if I could get my anxiety under control the depression would lift.
Thank you so much for your information and crossed fingers, it was appreciated :)
Janie just to show you what I meant about the name change this is off drug.com. chuck
May 10, 2016 ... The change comes after receiving reports of name confusion in the ... dosage forms and strengths of Trihelix remain the same as Brintellix.
Trintellix was renamed from Brintellix because it kept getting confused with another medication called Brilinta.
A psychiatrist I saw mentioned that some do get sick with that drug.
Maybe you could get a second opinion. You could try to get the Genesight assessment done.
Or wean down slowly and start trying natural remedies.
Hi Groovy-
This was my second opinion. Where do you get the Genesight assessment done? I have tried the natural remedies. Unfortunately they did not work. But thank you so much for your answer.
You are welcome.
I live in Alabama and first got it done at UAB.
Maybe if you call Genesight they could give you a list of doctors in your area.
Maintaining a good weight and appetite is important.
Maybe you should go to your primary care doctor or an integrative doctor.
