I had been on Wellbutrin but had to stop due to increased agitation and rage issues. I am now on Celexa and have noticed weight gain. I also wake up with puffiness around the eyes. Has anyone experienced this? Will it go away?? The Celexa is supposed to treat depression, but if I keep gaining weight, I really WILL be depressed!!
Has anyone noticed weight gain with Celexa?

Hi Valuation: That is the downside of many antidepressants for many people. It would be nice if we could get relief without having to pack on pounds! Antidepressants unfortunately affect metabolism. But there are many people who say they don't have this problem, or switch to another antidepressant which gives them relief without the weight problem. It's an individual matter.
Read about a study that said Celexa helped some women with their hot flashes. Mine were unbearable. My gyn attributed my 24 pound weight gain over 24 months to Celexa. Had I known... I would have dealt with the hot flashes. Have yet to determine how to loose the weight.
I always call my Pharmacist when I'm not sure about a prescription I'm taking or I check on Web. M.D. on the internet. So many of the prescriptions cause weight gain but another reason is because they cause the person to get a larger appetite. Hugs
I thought I was the only one experiencing this. For about 3-4 months I have gained 40 lbs. And I eat maybe once a day. Imy even active every day . 40 pounds later I finally realized it was the Celexa. Your exactly right..who wouldn't be depressed by gaining a lot of weight.I know I am. I'm 45 and I highly suggest if your anywhere between 30 and up I wouldn't take it unless you aren't worried about gaining weight. Honestly I took it in my 20's and didn't gain a pound. I think it's our bodies metabolism. I've noticed as I age I'm not able to stay slim as easily. I really have to watch the things I eat now. But with Celexa like I mentioned earlier the weight just kept adding on and I honestly thought I had something bad wrong with me. There was no reason for the gain. But good luck. I'm on the Wellbutrin now so well see how that goes.
I can relate so much it took me a while to figure out it was the celexa. They say your appetite increases so you gain but I didn't eat anymore. I did Wellbutrin but it didn't help me lose. I did stop gaining though. I'm weaning off the Wellbutrin now. I'm really hoping to see some results soon.
Has anyone lost the weight? How long did it take? It won't come off for me. I'm following a very strict yet healthy nutrition plan and doing a boot camp 5 days a week and NOTHING
I'm very glad I found this form as well. I stepped on the scale the other day to find out that I have gained 15 lbs in the last 6 months since being on Celexa. I am 54 and have always worked out, I don't usually weight myself because I can tell by how my clothes fit. I swear it was like all of a sudden I woke up one day and NOTHING fit! I was shocked and was trying to figure out what the heck happened, now I know. Will be contacting my Dr. TODAY! Thanks everyone and good luck!
Don't be surprised if your doctor tells you it's not the celexa. It is I've been off for 3 months and haven't been able to shed a pound despite a grueling effort. I'm so frustrated I want to cry
Yes i have gained 30 pounds being on celexa.
I have gained weight on celexa but didn't happen until about 6 months after I started taking it. I have gained 30 pounds. I feel like it is so out of my control... I have always exercised, watched what I ate and have been able to maintain a healthy weight all of my life. Now I keep gaining and gaining. I just wiened off celexa and am hoping to lose weight and not go back to the depression that got me on it in the first place. I am so glad I found this thread..I felt crazy because my dr. was like well you might gain 4 or 5 pounds you need to exercise/diet and I just want to scream I do I have been my whole life! this is different.
Yes cjohn1234, Been on celexa 8 months. Weight did not creep up, but suddenly appeared within about the past 3 weeks. Am tapering off. Can't take the weight.
I dont understand how you can gain weight on celexa. I've been soooo nauseous I haven't eaten more then a few bites at a time in days. Count your blessings.
Hi you all, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones . I love celexa! It has really eased
my depression. I take 20mlg every morning after i eat. Never gained in 8yrs on it. My shrink tried to raise me to 40 mlg but I didn't like my zombie effects.
Good Luck to everybody, there are so many meds out there to try. Don't
live feeling sad. Depression is a horrible way to live, truly yours, ~~DD~~
I was on celexa for about 9 months after my doctor told me it would not make me gain weight. I took Paxil years before and gained 30lbs but it fell right off after I stopped taking it. I stopped taking the celexa over 3 months ago and I am still gaining. I work out and eat relatively healthy.. Not perfect but no worse than I ever have. I am now 40lbs over my normal weight and I'm getting extremely depressed.
Before taking celexa I was on Zoloft but I had an embarrassing amount of sweating going on just from a small increase in heart rate. When I was on Zoloft I actually lost weight- around ten pounds and I was only on it for six months. I asked my doctor to switch me to something else because of the sweating issue so he recommended celexa as an alternative. I've been on celexa for around eight months now and I've gained 35 pounds. At first I thought the weight gain was due to eating out a lot because we had just moved right around the time i switched medications. We didn't have a fridge for a month and our gas hadn't been hooked up so I couldn't cook on the stove. I'm still slowly gaining weight even though I've been watching what I eat and doing cardio 20 minutes every day both at my local gym andthe workout facility in my place of employment. It's a real bummer.
I was on Lexapro for five years and it reached the point where it wasn't doing anything for me so my doctor had me switch to Celexa -- I ended up not feeling a difference in the depression and ended up gaining 30 lbs! I am a petite girl and I always have been but I truly EXPLODED on this medication -- I have never had this side effect before -- My normal range was 125 - 130lbs but on the celexa I ended up weighing at the most 160! And the weight happened so quickly too -- I am back on my Lexapro and even though I have only been on it for a couple weeks I am already back down to 133 -- Starting out at 150ish -- So crazy! I would suggest trying a different kind of anti-depressant such as the Lexapro which has always significantly improved my depression. Good luck!
Yes i have gained 10lbs on celexa in a year but i needed it i weigh 115 now
Luckily, no. I dropped 20 pounds from Paxil!! I find that Celexa works for me after trying many anti-depressants! Oops just noticed this question was dated 2009, hopefully you haven't gained weight!
