I had been on Wellbutrin but had to stop due to increased agitation and rage issues. I am now on Celexa and have noticed weight gain. I also wake up with puffiness around the eyes. Has anyone experienced this? Will it go away?? The Celexa is supposed to treat depression, but if I keep gaining weight, I really WILL be depressed!!
Has anyone noticed weight gain with Celexa?

I have been on Celexa for almost a year now and I understand what you mean about weight gain. When I wake up in the morning I also have a very puffy face and a headache as well. I also have asthma and notice that I wheeze alot even after using my inhaler and sometimes at night stop breathing for a moment. I gained alot of weight which seem to be mostly fluid. The weight gain makes me feel more depressed with the way I feel about myself and the way other people think about me, my Mom has even called me rolly polly, meaning "Fat", and my clothes don't fit - what am I suppose to do??? I must admit that I don't take my medicine sometimes - I feel to save myself or keep me from dying.
You are probably having an allergic reaction to celexa, and yes you wil get hungry that is why I take it at bedtime so I won't be getting out of bed to go to the fridge, I keep my depression meds on my night stand with a bottle of water so I wil take them as soon as I get into my bed because it may cause you to stager around and make you dizzy or drowsy thats why I don't take it during the day.
I refuse to take Celexa due to it interfering with alertness I have ADHD. That is all I need is to be distracted and not alert! AND now that I hear about Lantus I may refuse that too. I am doing Humalog 75/25. It is very difficult to control the sugars.I also have had a gastric stapling many years ago and have serious digestion problems. This is one frickin' nightmare to say the least.
I started taking the generic Celexa 10mg in Feb for anxiety and it worked wonders for me but within 3 months, I gained 10 lbs even while exercising. I was constantly hungery and thinking about food. My doctor switched me to generic Wellbutrin XL which returned my appetite to normal but it made me feel lousy, irritable, and withdrawn. After 2 weeks I had to stop taking it and went back on Celexa. I knew I had to fight the weight gain and incorporated more soups, salad, fruit, and green tea into my diet. Along with regular exercise, I am happy to report that I've been able to fight off the weight and I feel normal now. I also found that taking celexa later in the day works better for me than 1st thing in the morning. Good luck to everyone!
Ohhhhhhhhh YESSSSSSSSSS went from 145 to 170 and still climbing. That's the scary part is the accelerated weight gain ... every time I've been to the doctor I've been 5 pounds heavier ... and because of the hold that pharmaceuticals have on the medical community the doctors just say ... exercise and watch your snacks ... well guess what ... I am an 'exerciser' - always have been always will be.
When I first started taking an antidepressant, I was started on Lexapro. I really liked it. It worked, plus made me lose some extra pounds. The cost got to be too much for me, so I was switched to citalopram. I have been on citalopram now for six years. I was totally unaware of the side effect of weight gain and wish I would have known. I have slowly gained around 20 pounds over the last six years. I thought it was because I was making bad food choices all these years, when in reality I was eating pretty much the same thing. Now I see these forums and people are talking about weight gain with it. Bupropion was added just yesterday to my citalopram because I just kind of feel "numb"... not sad or upset or anything, just not as emotionally responsive to things I normally would be. I'm hoping it works and I can get off the citalopram altogether. I'm told also that bupropion helps to reverse the side effects of citalopram, so we'll see.
lol how could I fail to notice a 30 pound weight gain ... yes been on citalopram (generic celexa) for several years now with an alarming 5 pounds gained every 6 to 8 months or so. Im going to check this out with doc next week and see if there are any non-weight gain alternatives.
While some people gain weight after starting an antidepressant, the antidepressant isn't always a direct cause. There are many factors that can work together to contribute to weight gain during antidepressant therapy. For example: - 1- Overeating as a result of depression can cause weight gain.
2-Some people lose weight as part of their depression. In turn, an improved appetite associated with improved mood may result in increased weight.
Hi Valatron,
I'm also on Celexa and have been for over a year now. I too, have also experienced the weight gain and puffy eyes. So I totally understand what you are going through. I was disappointed at the weight gain, but have come to find that walking, along with a good diet seems to help. The puffy eyes, well, I'm yet to figure out that one. People always say to me "you look so tired", even though I don't feel that way. Maybe an ice pack on the eyes after waking will take down a bit of the swelling. I hope this helps and take care.
Kind regards,

Try hemroid cream under eyes. Works great just be sure not to get in
when I was on celexa well I was taking the generic forms I noticed the total opposite weight loss it was somewhat like an appetite suppressant for me loved it i need to get back on it because I've been spazzing out and my depression/ppmd is always up and down and when my ppmd kicks in I go into rage mood and that's so not good
I am on Celexa, and did gain less than 5 pounds. However, (someone has already mentioned this) depression affects so much not just in our lives and motivation, but in the way our body works, uses food for energy, etc. that it's possible that just feeling better and eating may contribute to the weight gain. Some people do not eat very well when depressed, and if even we do, our metabolism when depressed could be speeded up due to the fight or flight stress, even though we may feel super tired and draggy. No doubt some meds definately do CAUSE weight gain, I'm convinced that in other instances, just settling down the fight or flight response and the anxiety that can go with depression will cause body changes and hence, weight gain. But... for me, it's better to be a slightly chubby, happy and motivated woman then a skinny, gray lump on the couch.
Valarton, I did take celexa for a short time. I did not notice any wt gain, I lost wt. But could not take it because it made me feel drunk when i got up in the mornings. I'm now on wellbutrin, hope it works. I do know everybody is diffrent and therefore meds work diffrent on each person. Good luck!
I'm on Effexor but in my personal experience I found that my 'need' to have a fit body dissapeared once I started taking AD's about ten years ago. In reality I am now over weight and the scale keeps going up. I'm finding this hard to explain... but I know my wieght is bad for me and I know what I have to do, I just can't seem to get the motivation or 'fire' in my brain to do it. I feel like that part of me (along with some others) has gone numb. Almost like I don't care. Then, when I go to put my jeans on and realize how tight they are or just don't fit anymore, I'm depressed! In the past, if I even saw a tiny muffin top forming, I was on it like white on rice!
I just can't seem to regrasp my old self... in that way. Honestly I feel like I am travelling in a vicious circle. It just makes me wonder if it's the actual meds putting the weight on us, or a numbness to that part of our minds now. I guess I thought I was stronger than this.
I have had the exact same experience on AD's. I was on Wellbutrin and just stopped working out. Didn't really care (I want to though) much about it. I used to love it - but I've completely lost my drive. So, I gained on Wellbutrin, but I attribute that to the fact that it just made me lose my drive to live the healthy life I was living before. It did help the depression, but not enough and I still had debilitating anxiety attacks, so I am switching to Celexa. With that, I've made myself go back to the gym and eat properly again to avoid any possible weight gain. Time will tell! I do feel better being back in the gym and was shocked at how much strength I've lost. I was a size four and am now a six, wearing my size four suits to work very uncomfortably so I really need to shed the weight because I can't afford an entire new work wardrobe!
crap..ive gained 13 pounds in 2 months on celexa..i struggle with weight issues as it is.it has made my anxiety much worse cause of the weight.i had a perfect body now im a size 12 i am goin to try a snri they say no weight gain
I was on Celexa for depression it didn't work out for me, but I wouldn't say it won't for you? But, yes I did gain some weight and also weight water retention in my legs. I had to get off it asap. But, I can't really say if that's what will happen to you. THAT's why I sometimes don't want to answer some questions cause everyone's body is different. BUT, yeah sometimes they don't tell you all the side effects. I am pretty sure if you read all the paperwork for that medication it's on there. I HOPE this HELPS!!!
